INSIDER SECRET:  The airport lounge access provided by The Business Platinum® Card from American Express will get you into 1,400+ lounges worldwide. So you’ll rarely be stuck without a place to relax on a long layover.

If you’ve been considering The Business Platinum® Card from American Express, you can earn 75,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after meeting tiered minimum spending requirements.

AMEX Membership Rewards points are extremely valuable, especially if you’re looking to save money on travel! The points you can earn from this offer (welcome bonus plus points from minimum spending) can easily get you nearly $1,400 worth of airfare (and potentially MUCH more)!

But that’s just the bonus offer. The card is loaded with other amazing perks, like incredible airport lounge access. To learn about what makes this card so special, read the rest of this AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card Review.

You can use AMEX points to fly in style to Singapore. But there are so many other perks you’ll learn about in this Business Platinum AMEX card review

AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card Review

Apply here:  The Business Platinum® Card from American Express

When you apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card, you’ll earn:

  • 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
  • 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $10,000 on qualifying purchases within the same timeframe

So between the intro bonus and points you earn from minimum spending, you’ll have at least 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points (75,000-point intro bonus + at least 20,000 minimum spending points).

You’ll also get one year of Platinum Global Access from WeWork, which allows you to use 300+ premium workspaces in 75+ cities. To get this exclusive offer, enroll between Feb. 15, 2019, and Dec. 31, 2019.

AMEX Membership Rewards points are popular transferable points to collect because you get flexibility to redeem points for award travel with any of the AMEX airline or hotel partners. You can also use points to buy gift cards to popular stores and restaurants.

And the card comes with a host of other perks, including:

  • 35% of your points back for ALL First Class or Business Class flights booked through the AMEX travel portal using Pay With Points
  • 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal using Pay With Points (up to 500,000 points per calendar year)
  • Up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc.)
  • Up to $200 annual Dell statement credit ($100 from January to June, $100 from July to December)
  • Ability to book hotel stays through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
  • AMEX Platinum Concierge
  • AMEX Premium Roadside Assistance
  • Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, Escape, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
  • Bonus points or statement credits when taking advantage of an AMEX Offer
  • Elite car rental status with Avis, Executive status with National Car Rental, and Gold Plus Rewards with Hertz
  • Free Hilton Honors Gold elite status (free breakfast and upgrades when available)
  • Free Marriott Bonvoy Gold elite status
  • 10 free Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi passes each calendar year
  • Statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Terms & limitations apply

This card has a $595 annual fee (see rates & fees), which is NOT waived the first year. But the statement credits, airport lounge access, and savings from AMEX Offers can easily offset the fee.

AMEX Centurion lounges are some of the nicest airport lounges around, but you can only access them with certain AMEX cards, like the AMEX Business Platinum card

And you can earn the $200 airline incidental credit each calendar year. So you can earn it in 2019 and again in early 2020.

Another excellent reason to apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card is AMEX small business credit cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report. So it doesn’t count toward card limits other banks have (like Chase)!

How to Earn Points With the AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card

With the AMEX Business Platinum card you’ll earn:

  • 1.5x AMEX Membership Rewards points on single purchases of $5,000+ (up to 1 million additional points per calendar year)
  • 5x AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book airfare or prepaid hotels through the AMEX travel portal
  • 1x AMEX Membership Rewards points on all other purchases

The ability to earn 5x AMEX points on airfare or prepaid hotels is the best earning rate for those categories for any small business credit card.

How to Use Your AMEX Points

AMEX Membership Rewards points can be incredibly valuable if you transfer them directly to any of the AMEX transfer partners to book award travel. And airline alliances and partnerships make it easier to find award flights to your desired destination. For example, you can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Air Canada to book an award flight on United Airlines, a Star Alliance partner airline.

Using points this way can get you unbelievable value! For example, you could transfer 70,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points to Air Canada to book a one-way first-class award flight on Lufthansa from Europe (Zone 1) to the US. This same ticket typically costs $11,000+ if you pay cash!

You can check out our American Express points review to learn more. And you can learn how to redeem points for travel to specific destinations with our guides to place like Hawaii and Europe.

After meeting the tiered minimum spending requirements, you’ll have at least 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points (75,000 points from welcome bonus + at least 20,000 points from minimum spending). And if you don’t want the hassle of learning how to make the most of AMEX’s travel partners, you’re in luck. AMEX points can be super simple to redeem directly for travel.

You can redeem these points to get $950 worth of gift cards through the AMEX portal. But AMEX Business Platinum cardholders can get nearly $1,400 worth of airfare by using the Pay With Points rebate benefit.

When you use AMEX Pay With Points, you get one cent per point toward your ticket. AMEX Business Platinum cardholders can get a 35% points rebate. You’ll get:

  • 35% of your points back for ALL First Class or Business Class flights booked through the AMEX travel portal
  • 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal

This table shows how earning 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points can get you nearly $1,400 worth of airfare.

Best Benefits of the AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card

The AMEX Business Platinum card has no shortage of benefits and perks that are super valuable.

Here are a few of the best.

Access to Airport Lounges

The Business Platinum® Card from American Express has incredibly comprehensive lounge access. Folks who have the AMEX Business Platinum will get membership to the AMEX Global Lounge Collection, which includes:

  • The Centurion Lounge network
  • The International American Express Lounges
  • Delta Sky Club (when you’re flying Delta that day)
  • Priority Pass Select lounges
  • Airspace Lounges
  • Escape Lounges
  • Plaza Premium Lounges

That means you’ll have access to 1,400+ lounges worldwide, though the vast majority of them are outside the US.

Team Member Joseph Gets LOTS of Use From His Priority Pass Membership. Like at the Gorgeous Al Dhabi Lounge in the Abu Dhabi Airport

Lots of folks consider Centurion Lounges to be the best lounges in the US.  You’ll find them in a handful of US airports, including:

  • Charlotte (CLT) – coming soon
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)
  • Denver (DEN) – coming soon
  • Houston Intercontinental (IAH)
  • Las Vegas (LAS)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – coming soon
  • New York – La Guardia (LGA)
  • New York (JFK) – coming soon
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Philadelphia (PHL)
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • Seattle-Tacoma (SEA)
Best No Foreign Transaction Fee Cards
Centurion Lounges Have Tasty Buffet-Style Meals, Premium Alcoholic Beverages, Showers, Conference Spaces, and Speedy Wi-Fi

Plus, whenever you have a same-day Delta flight, you’ll have access to Delta lounges too, and there are 50 Delta lounges in North America alone.

If you’re not sure whether you’ll benefit from this card, this post will help you find AMEX lounges in the airports you visit most.

$200 Airline Fee Credit Every Calendar Year

When you apply for the card, and every January after, you can select a participating airline and have incidental charges such as inflight meals, checked bags or seat assignments reimbursed to your account, up to $200 per year.

It’s really that easy to get $200 in statement credits. It’s also possible – although not guaranteed – that you can get the credit when purchasing gift cards in specific increments with certain airlines. This guide explains more about using your AMEX airline-fee credit for gift cards.

Automatic Hotel and Rental Car Elite Status

Just for holding the AMEX Business Platinum card, you’re eligible to enroll in several different loyalty programs to get automatic elite status, including Hilton Gold elite status and Marriott Bonvoy Gold elite status (bonus points, upgrades when available, and other perks).

You can also enroll to receive Avis Preferred Club, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, and National Emerald Club Executive, which come with perks like free upgrades, special discounts, and accelerated earning of free rentals!

Team member Joseph LOVES National Emerald Club Executive status, because you get to choose from a significantly higher quality of cars than without the status.

Joseph Consistently Rents a Chevy Camaro for the Same Price as a Hyundai Elantra

AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts

The AMEX Business Platinum (and other AMEX Platinum charge cards) gives you access to AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts, a program that can dramatically enhance your luxury hotel stays!

The benefits you receive will vary by hotel, but you’ll often get things like free breakfast, spa and food credits, late checkout and room upgrades. You can even be upgraded to a suite!

If you pay for luxury hotels, you’ll get your money’s worth by booking through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts.

Global Entry / TSA PreCheck Credit

The AMEX Business Platinum comes with a credit that covers the application fee for Global Entry ($100) or TSA PreCheck ($85). Membership with these programs lasts five years. And the card’s credit renews every four years for Global Entry or every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck. So you’ll always have the credit when it’s time to renew your membership!

With TSA PreCheck, you won’t have to remove your toiletries or computer from your bag or take off your jacket at security checkpoints. TSA PreCheck members even get their own aisle!

With Global Entry, you don’t have to wait in the long immigration line when you get back from an overseas trip and you’ll get TSA PreCheck benefits too!

TSA PreCheck Can Help You Traverse the Security Line Quicker and More Efficiently

Team member Joseph used his TSA PreCheck the last time he traveled with a friend. He was through security 30+ minutes faster than his travel buddy who did NOT have TSA PreCheck.

If you’re already enrolled in these programs, you can “gift” the credit to someone else by paying for their application with your card and it will automatically kick in.

Complimentary Internet Benefits

You will get 10 Gogo inflight internet passes per calendar year. This can save you LOTS of money, considering how much airlines charge for inflight internet!

Each pass will last the duration of your “flight segment,” which is defined as “one takeoff and landing on the same aircraft, with the same flight number, between two cities.”

You’ll also get free use of Boingo hotspots, which you’ll often find at the airport. You do have to sign-up for your free Boingo WiFi.

However, I don’t think this perk is super valuable, because lots of airports have free internet anyway. Plus, the card already comes with lounge access where you can get free internet in a cozy environment.

Is the AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card Worth the Annual Fee?

Personally, I’m considering the card because of the WeWorks membership that comes with it for the first year. Between the co-working membership and the intro bonus it’s easy to justify the the annual fee for the first year. But what about after that?

The $595 annual fee on the AMEX Business Platinum card isn’t cheap, but even if you don’t take advantage of all of the card’s benefits, you can still come out ahead. The easiest perk to take advantage of each year is the $200 in annual airline credits. After you’ve earned that, you only need to get another $395 in value for it to be worth the annual fee.

You get up to $200 in Dell credits every calendar year with the AMEX Business Platinum card

If you make any Dell purchases, the card comes with up to $200 in Dell credits each year. And if you find yourself stuck in airports purchasing expensive airport food all the time, the airport lounge access perks can easily save you $100s.

If you spend a lot on flights and prepaid hotels, being able to earn 5x AMEX Membership Rewards points for those purchases could earn you many times the annual fee in travel rewards. And with the Hilton Gold status you get just for having the card, you’ll get free breakfast at all Hilton hotels. If you travel with a family, that benefit alone can save you $60+ a day!

Does the AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?

No (see rates and fees).

Who Is Eligible for the AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card?

You aren’t eligible for the Business Platinum card’s welcome bonus if you currently have or have ever had the card before. AMEX will also consider other factors, like how many AMEX cards you’ve opened or closed recently. But if you aren’t eligible for this offer, AMEX will let you know with a pop-up window before they check your credit.

That being said, you’ll likely need a credit score of 750+ to get approved for this card and you’ll also need to own a small business to qualify. But you may be eligible and not even realize it. You don’t need to be running a full-time business to qualify for business credit cards. Freelance work, including driving for Uber or Lyft, dog walking, or freelance art or design work can qualify as long as you’re not doing the job as an employee.

I’ve qualified for small business cards with freelance writing and my wife has done the same as a part-time freelance artist. And if you’re a sole proprietor, when you apply for the card you can use your social security number as your tax ID and your name as the business name on the application.

For step-by-step help check out our guide to AMEX business card applications.

Cards Similar to the AMEX Business Platinum Credit Card

To earn the full welcome bonus on the AMEX Business Platinum card, you’ll have to meet a steep tiered-minimum-spending requirement (totaling $20,000 in three months). This is one of the larger requirements I’ve seen on a card.

Keep in mind, you might still consider applying even if you can’t meet the the total minimum-spending requirement because you can still earn 50,000 valuable AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

Plastiq is a tool I use to meet large spending requirements. This convenient service allows you to pay bills that don’t normally accept credit cards. You’ll pay a small fee (2.5%), but it might be worth it to unlock the huge bonus on the Business Platinum card.

American Express Business Platinum Review
Paying a Small Fee to Unlock Huge Bonuses Can Be Totally Worth It If You Earn Valuable Rewards, Which Can Help You Book Once-in-a-Lifetime Travel Adventures

If you’re not a big spender, don’t worry. There are plenty of alternative small business credit cards with lucrative intro bonuses.

I’d recommend the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card. With it you’ll earn 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.  That’s worth at least $1,000 in travel if you redeem the points through the Chase Travel Portal, which makes the card’s $95 annual fee very reasonable.

And Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to 13 airlines and hotels, including some that AMEX points don’t transfer to, like Hyatt. Read our full review of the Chase Ink Business Preferred to learn more.

Bottom Line

After meeting the AMEX Business Platinum card’s tiered minimum-spending requirements, you can earn a total of 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points.  With the points you’ll earn from the intro bonus and completing the minimum spending, you’ll have enough points to get $950 in gift cards or nearly $1,400 in airfare.

For many folks, the perks on the Business Platinum card can easily justify paying the card’s annual fee. You can actually make a profit (like team member Meghan did) by taking advantage of certain AMEX Offers you get as a cardholder.

Don’t forget, AMEX small business credit cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report. So they won’t add to your Chase 5/24 count and restrict you from earning lucrative bonuses with Chase.
