Daraius: The British Airways New First Class cabin does not have a bed like Lufthansa’s new first class, but there’s something about the simple elegance of the cabin which appeals to me.

I also like that the service is not overly intrusive and fawning like on some Asian airlines, but is competent and professional. A dry sense of humour helps too.
Oh, and I go nuts playing with the cool electronic window shades!
The flight attendant escorted us to our seats and took our jackets and distributed the amenity kits, slippers, and pajamas.
I also like the blue light throughout the cabin.
We were in a Boeing 747, so some seats were right in the nose of the plane.
We each had our own private seat pod.
The furnishings were very elegant.
There was a big table which folded out.
…and electronic seat controls.
There was also a much bigger TV than on our flight from Boston to London in the old British Airways First Class.
I really love the electronic window shades which transform…
… the cabin when they are lowered into a very private flying experience.
Emily Jablon: I like the shades too! I’ve never seen anything like it on another airline. It almost makes me feel like I wasn’t flying!
Daraius: Soon it was time for lunch. Here’s the menu:
Emily had the cheese mousse described on the menu as “Warm Twineham Grange cheese mousse with asparagus and lemon dressing.”
Emily Jablon: The Mouse was delicious! I would order it again for sure.
Daraius: I had the Gazpacho described as “Gazpacho with cucumber”
We sat together for the last meal of our Honeymoon!
Emily Jablon: It is so nice that Daraius can sit with me to eat dinner. I’ve volunteered to sit on the small seat, but he always declines. What a sweetie!
Daraius: Emily had the beef described as “Braised British beef with grain mustard and horseradish mashed potatoes and confit of carrot and hispi cabbage”
I had the guinea fowl described as “Roasted Guinea Fowl with broad beans, pea fricassee, sweet potato mash and Port jus “
Then it was time for dessert.
Emily had the chocolate fondant described as “Chilled chocolate fondant with roasted hazelnuts, sugar tuile and a salted caramel center “
I had the peach frangipane described as “Peach frangipane sponge with caramelised peaches and light custard sauce “
Emily Jablon: Daraius’ dessert was tastier than mine, but they were both very good.
Emily had tea to finish her meal.
After lunch, the flight attendant made my bed, and I caught up with the Economist.
…while Emily finished her school paper.
Emily Jablon: I always feel cold on flights so I dress in layers and ask for extra blankets.
Daraius: I plugged in my laptop to charge, but it wouldn’t charge! I asked the flight attendant, who explained that while the laptop would not charge, it would also not discharge while plugged in. So my battery sat at ~60% throughout the flight.
I skipped the afternoon tea service and caught up on some work. Looking at the menu again makes me hungry, and I’m not sure if I should have skipped some more dessert!
Emily Jablon: I took afternoon tea which included scones and tea. The scones were delicious! It was service in a real tea kettle rather than in a cup with a tea bag.
Daraius: I think there was a tea bag in that kettle!
At Boston, there was virtually no line at immigration, and after about 25 minutes we were on our way to catch our Southwest flight back to Kansas City.
We did have to pay ~$400 per long-distance segment in taxes and fees to fly British Airways, but the experience was worth it to me.
