AMEX small business credit cards are very appealing to folks in the miles & points hobby because they do NOT appear on your personal credit report. So opening cards will NOT hurt your chances of being approved for Chase cards.
That said, the welcome bonus and perks have to be valuable to consider submitting an application. Because you’re only eligible to earn the welcome bonus ONCE per person, per lifetime on ALL their cards.
If you qualify for small business cards, the American Express® Business Gold Card is worth considering. You can transfer the points you earn from the card to airline and hotel partners for free travel! And the card’s annual fee is waived the first year!
Full Review of the AMEX Business Gold Card
Apply Here: American Express® Business Gold Card
The AMEX Business Gold Card is an overhauled version of what was previously the Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN.
The card has received a lot more changes than just its name! Unfortunately, one of the differences with this card is that there is currently NO welcome offer in the form of points. So you won’t receive a big boost to your travel balance by opening this card and meeting minimum spending requirements.
Instead, the card’s bonus is in the form of helpful business tools, like G Suite and ZipRecruiter. You can save up to $3,188 on these tools when you open this card.
How to Earn Points With the AMEX Business Gold Card
The AMEX Business Gold comes with great spending categories. You’ll earn 4 AMEX Membership Rewards points on 2 categories where you spend the most each month (capped at the first $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year, then 1 point per $1):
- Airfare purchased directly from airlines
- US purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
- US purchases made directly from select technology providers of computer hardware, software, and cloud solutions
- US purchases at gas stations
- US purchases at restaurants
- US purchases for shipping
This is a nice change because you won’t have to choose you bonus categories before hand, instead you’ll automatically earn 4X AMEX Membership Rewards points per $1 on whatever 2 categories you spend the most on each month. And you will earn 1 AMEX Membership Rewards point per $1 for everything else.
If you have lots of business expenses, you may do well with this card. AMEX Membership Rewards points are very handy for free flights all over the world!
How to Use Your Points
AMEX Membership Rewards points get you lots of travel flexibility. Because if you don’t have set travel plans for a future trip, these transferable points give you the option to choose from multiple airline and hotel partners when the time comes.
The AMEX Membership Rewards points program has 20 direct airline and hotel partners. Plus, you’ll get access to other indirect partners thanks to airline alliances and partnerships.
Transferring points to partners will usually get you the most value for your points. But you can also redeem points for 1 cent each using AMEX Pay With Points for flights through the AMEX Membership Rewards portal without having to worry about blackout dates.
Plus, you’ll receive a 25% points rebate if you use your AMEX points for flights booked with AMEX Travel (up to 250,000 points back each calendar year). The rebate will kick in for First and Business Class tickets, as well as coach tickets on your selected airline.
Here are a few ways you can use AMEX points to get Big Travel!
1. Cheap Award Flights to Hawaii
Alaska Airlines and Singapore Airlines are partners. This means you can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Singapore Airlines. Then you can book coach award flights on Alaska Airlines to Hawaii from West Coast cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle for only 12,000 Singapore Airlines miles!
That means by spending just $6,000 in your selected bonus categories, you’ll have enough points for a round-trip flight from the West Coast to Hawaii (24,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points for a round-trip flight / 4 points per $1 for spending in bonus categories)!
2. Delta Award Flights to Los Angeles, New York, and Many Other Great Cities!
Folks traveling within the US can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points from the AMEX Business Gold welcome bonus to Delta. And then book award flights to fun cities like New York or Nashville.
Delta no longer publishes an award chart. But it’s possible to find cheap one-way coach award flights at the following prices if you’re flexible with your travel dates:
- 5,500 Delta miles for short-haul flights (i.e. Los Angeles to San Francisco)
- 10,000 Delta miles for medium-haul flights (i.e. New York to Atlanta)
- 12,500 Delta miles for long-haul flights (i.e. New York to Los Angeles)
And Delta frequently has fabulous sales, both domestic and internationally. We always tell you about Delta award sales here!
Keep in mind, you’ll have to pay a small excise fee to transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Delta because it’s a US airline.
3. One-Way Business Class Award Flight to Europe
If you’re looking to travel to Europe in style, you can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Air Canada Aeroplan and book a Business Class award flight. And Air Canada is part of Star Alliance, which means you can redeem miles for award flights on partner airlines like Lufthansa, SWISS, and United Airlines.
A one-way Business Class award seat from the US to countries in Western Europe (like Germany, Italy, and Switzerland) costs 55,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles. A similar one-way Business Class flight could cost several thousand dollars if you paid cash. So the points you earn with your AMEX Business Gold can save you lots of money!
Benefits of the AMEX Business Gold Card
You won’t receive a hefty amount of bonus points for opening the card, but there are several benefits that might make up for it. The AMEX Business Gold comes with other perks to help business owners save time & money:
One-Year Subscription to G Suite (for up to 3 users) and ZipRecruiter
You’ll receive statement credits for qualifying purchases of G Suite and ZipRecruiter when you use your AMEX Business Gold within the first 12 months of card membership. Both offers are good for 1 free year.
The value of G Suite statement credit will be applied towards purchases charged to your card by Google within the first 12 months of card membership for subscriptions to G Suite Basic, Business and Enterprise, up to $200.
The ZipRecruiter statement credit will be applied towards purchases charged to your card by ZipRecruiter within the first 12 months of card membership for ZipRecruiter subscription products only, up to $2,988.
Expense Management Tools
The card is equipped to connect to Quickbooks, access SpendManager, receive a year-end summary, etc.
Add Employee Cards
You can order cards for your employees with a no-annual-fee option. So you can earn AMEX Membership Rewards when your employees swipe, too! This also makes it easy to track employee expenses with spending limits, alerts, and summary reports.
One of my favorite parts about being an AMEX cardholder is getting access to AMEX Offers. These targeted deals allow you to get a discount or earn extra points on purchases you might already be planning. And they’re always changing, which means there are always new opportunities to save money!
Return protection can refund you for purchases charged entirely to your AMEX Business Gold. Coverage is limited to 90 days from purchase (up to $300 per item and up to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year)
Is the AMEX Business Gold Card Worth the Annual Fee?
The AMEX Business Gold comes with an annual fee of $295. That’s no small amount of money! But this could be a winner for small business owners who generate a lot of spending. And if you take advantage of perks like a free year of G Suite Basic or ZipRecruiter, that’s a potential $3,188 you’ll save!
If you’re just a casual miles & points hobbyist, I wouldn’t recommend this offer at ALL.
Does the AMEX Business Gold Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?
Who Is Eligible for the AMEX Business Gold Card?
If you’re a small business owner, you can apply for the AMEX Business Gold card using just your social security number. You’re NOT required to have an EIN (Employer Identification Number) to apply.
Remember, to qualify for a business card, you just have to show the bank you’re aiming to make a profit, such as tutoring or selling items on eBay.
Also before you apply, remember that you only have the opportunity to earn each AMEX card’s bonus the first time you open it. So you may want to hold off and see if AMEX will offer bonus points at some point. Though it’s no guarantee.
Credit Cards Similar to the AMEX Business Gold Card
AMEX Business Platinum
The Business Platinum® Card from American Express is a souped-up version of the AMEX Business Gold. Some benefits are similar, like a 35% points rebate when you purchase airfare with points through the AMEX Travel portal on your selected airline (or any First or Business Class flight). But its welcome offer is up to 75,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points:
- 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
- 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $10,000 on qualifying purchases within the same time frame
That’s enough for a round-trip flight to Europe!
The card also has benefits that are WAY better than the AMEX Business Gold card. But it’s also got a bigger $450 annual fee. Here are some of the things you’ll get:
- 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book airfare and hotels through the AMEX travel portal
- Up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc.)
- Ability to book hotel stays through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
- Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
- Elite car rental status with Avis, Executive status with National Car Rental, and Gold Plus Rewards with Hertz
- Free Hilton Honors Gold elite status (free breakfast and upgrades when available)
- Statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
- Terms & Limitations apply
When you apply for the AMEX Business Gold Card, you can cash in on thousands of dollars in free small business tools from G Suite and ZipRecruiter. And you’ll have excellent 4X bonus categories to choose from, so you can earn a bunch of AMEX Membership Rewards points in a hurry!
By transferring points to any of 20 direct airline and hotel partners for award travel, you can hop the globe for free with AMEX Membership Rewards points. For example, you’ll have enough points for 2 round-trip award flights from the West Coast to Hawaii if you spend just $12,000 in your selected bonus categories!
Besides the helpful welcome bonus, AMEX Business Gold Card holders can save money with perks like:
- NO foreign transaction fees
- Return protection
- AMEX Offers
Don’t forget, AMEX small business credit cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report. So opening cards will NOT hurt your chances of being approved for any Chase cards!
