The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is a great addition to your wallet if you’re looking to save money on flights to Australia, Europe, Hawaii, and other popular destinations around the world!
The sign-up bonus on this card is higher than normal. You can earn 50,000 American Airlines miles after meeting minimum spending requirements. That’s more enough for 2 round-trip coach award flights within the mainland US, or you could book a round-trip off-peak flight to Europe! The nice part is you can redeem American Airlines miles for award flights on partner airlines, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, and many others!
The Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card sign-up bonus could get you $1,000+ worth of airfare!
Keep in mind, the card’s annual fee is waived the first year! So you can test out the perks for ~10 or ~11 months to decide if paying the annual fee for the second year is worth it.
The Citi American Airlines Platinum Select Card Sign-Up Bonus Can Be Worth More Than $1,000+
When you sign-up for the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select credit card, you’ll earn 50,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,500 on purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account.
The best way to use the 50,000-mile Citi American Airlines credit card sign-up bonus depends on your travel goals! Some folks might prefer to stretch the bonus for more short-haul coach award flights. And others may want to splurge for a fancy Business Class award seat.
For example, 25,000 American Airlines miles is enough for a round-trip coach award flight from New York to Los Angeles. These same tickets can sell for ~$450 each. So you’d get $900 worth of airfare!
You can just as easily use the sign-up bonus to book a one-way award flight to Europe that costs hundreds of dollars! For example, I found one-way flights to destinations like London and Paris for 30,000 American Airlines miles. And you’d have plenty of miles to spare!
Keep in mind, the amount of taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges can vary by award flight depending which airline you’re flying. So it’s important to do the math to see if it makes sense to use miles for an award or pay cash and use miles for a different flight in the future.
How to Earn Miles With the Citi American Airlines Credit Card
It’s easy for Citi American Airlines Platinum Select cardholders to boost and replenish their miles balances because you earn:
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent on American Airlines flights
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent at gas stations and restaurants
- 1X American Airlines mile per $1 spent on other purchases
There’s a special benefit for big spenders. You’ll earn a $100 American Airlines flight discount after you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your card year and renew your card.
How to Use Your American Airlines Miles
You can use American Airlines miles to book award flights directly on the airline. Or you can book partner award seats on these airlines:
- Alaska Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Royal Jordanian
You can book most partner award flights online, although there are a few exceptions, like Cathay Pacific, Etihad, or Japan Airlines. To book these partner award flights, you must call American Airlines at 800-433-7300.
Here are a few examples of what you can do with 50,000 American Airlines miles:
- Book 6 short-haul flights within the US or Canada. One-way flights 500 miles or less cost only 7,500 American Airlines miles.
- Book round-trip award tickets to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru for 40,000 American Airlines miles in coach
- Get 2 round-trip coach award tickets within the continental US (award seats cost 25,000 miles each)
- Book a one-way coach ticket to India or the Middle East on Etihad for 40,000 American Airlines miles
- Redeem 45,000 American Airlines miles for a round-trip coach award flight to Hawaii or 40,000 miles for the same flight during off-peak travel dates.
The above examples are the cost of low-level Saver award seats. These are the cheapest award flights you can book, which sometimes require you to be flexible with your travel dates. That said, American Airlines also offers standard award flights you can book without having to worry about blackout dates. Although these require you to use more miles.
Benefits of the Citi American Airlines Credit Card
Besides a lucrative sign-up bonus, there are other ongoing benefits that make the Citi American Airlines credit card worth adding to your wallet.
American Airlines Travel Benefits
With the Citi American Airlines credit card, you’ll get:
- Free first checked bag for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation (domestic flights only)
- Preferred boarding for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation
- 25% off eligible in-flight purchases when you use your card on American Airlines flights
- Reduced Mileage Awards – get discounts up to 7,500 miles round-trip on award flights to certain airports
Preferred boarding is a wonderful perk. Isn’t it annoying when the passenger in front of you jams 3 bags into the overhead bin and leaves you with nowhere to put your luggage? Well, you can avoid being the last person to board with the preferred boarding perk you get with the Citi American Airlines card. You’ll board in group 5, which is better than being in 6, 7, 8, or 9 and having to check your bag at the gate.
Citi Price Rewind
Citi Price Rewind is a unique perk you won’t find on many credit cards. When you pay for registered items at select online merchants, Citi will automatically check for a lower price at other merchants.
If the same item is found at a lower price within 60 days of your initial purchase date, you may receive reimbursement of the price difference. To be eligible for coverage, you must pay for the item at least in part with your Citi American Airlines credit card.
Coverage is limited to the lesser of $500 or the amount charged to your card. And the maximum coverage is $2,500 per calendar year.
Note: Starting July 29, 2018, this coverage will decrease. Coverage will be limited to the lesser of $200 or the amount charged to your card. And the maximum coverage will be $1,000 per calendar year.
Although the coverage is declining, this is still a fantastic perk to have with a credit card.
By paying for an eligible item with the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card, you can extend the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional 24 months (total coverage between both the manufacturer’s warranty and extended warranty cannot exceed 84 months).
I have a firsthand story of why the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card is amazing for purchase protection, like extended warranty coverage.
My friend’s $2,500 flatscreen television recently stopped working just after the manufacturer’s warranty expired. I asked him what card he paid with and to check the extended warranty benefits. Sure enough, he paid with the Citi American Airlines card.
With this coverage, Citi will repair or replace the item. Or reimburse you up to the amount charged on the card (up to $10,000). My friend filed a claim and received a $2,500 reimbursement from Citi for the full cost of the television!
You can check the complete Guide to Benefits to check exclusions and to learn how to file a claim.
When you pay for travel with your Citi American Airlines card, including award flight taxes & fees, you’ll get these coverages:
- Baggage delay – Get up to $100 per covered traveler if your bags are delayed 6+ hours
- Trip delay – Get up to $500 per covered traveler to pay for meals and hotels if your trip is delayed 12+ hours
- Trip cancellation & interruption – You may be reimbursed up to $5,000 per covered traveler per trip if the trip is cancelled or interrupted for an eligible reason
Having automatic travel protection is a fantastic perk that can save you a lot of money in the long run!
Is the American Airlines Credit Card Worth the Annual Fee?
The card has a $99 annual fee, which waived for the first 12 months. This means you can test out the card for ~11 months and decide if it’s worth keeping for another year. If you fly American Airlines, the free checked baggage perk alone could be enough to make the card worth keeping.
Does the Citi American Airlines card have a foreign transaction fee?
Who Is Eligible for the Citi American Airlines Card?
Remember, Citi will NOT let you earn the sign-up bonus from more than one personal card of the same “brand” within 24 months. For example, if you’ve opened or closed the Citi American Airlines Executive card in the past 24 months, you would NOT be eligible for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® sign-up bonus.
However, there’s an exception if you’ve had the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard® in the past 24 months. You CAN earn the sign-up bonus on the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card because Citi says:
American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have had any Citi® / AAdvantage® card (other than a CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® card) opened or closed in the past 24 months.
It’s a great time to consider applying for the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select credit card to boost your stash of American Airlines miles. You’ll earn 50,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,500 on purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account.
Collecting American Airlines miles can make a lot of sense, even if you never fly on the airline. Because you can redeem miles for award flights on partner airlines, like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, and several others!
The sign-up bonus can easily get you $1,000 or more worth of airfare! And cardholders also enjoy many other fabulous perks, like preferred boarding and free checked baggage!
