The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® is a great addition to your wallet if you’re looking to save money on flights to Australia, Europe, Hawaii, and other popular destinations around the world! For a limited time, the sign-up bonus on this card is higher than normal – you can earn 60,000 American Airlines miles after meeting minimum spending requirements.
That’s enough for 2 round-trip coach award flights within the mainland US or Canada, or a round-trip flight to Europe. The nice part is you can redeem American Airlines miles for award flights on partner airlines, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, and many others.
The Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card sign-up bonus could easily get you $1,000+ worth of airfare.
Here’s our Citi American Airlines Platinum Select review.
Keep in mind, the card’s annual fee is waived the first 12 months. So you can test out the perks for ~11 months to decide if paying the annual fee for the second year is worth it.
Citi American Airlines Platinum Select Review: The Sign-Up Bonus Can Be Worth More Than $1,000
When you sign-up for the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select credit card, you’ll earn 60,000 American Airlines miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.
The best way to use the 60,000-mile Citi American Airlines credit card sign-up bonus depends on your travel goals. Some folks might prefer to stretch the bonus for more short-haul coach award flights. And others may want to splurge for a fancy Business Class award seat.
For example, 25,000 American Airlines miles is enough for a round-trip coach award flight from New York to Los Angeles. These same tickets can sell for ~$450 each. So you’d get $900 worth of airfare for 50,000 points.
You can just as easily use the sign-up bonus to book a round-trip award flight to Europe that can cost over $1,000. Or a round-trip flight to Hawaii (with miles left over) for a tropical vacation!
Keep in mind, the amount of taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges can vary by award flight depending which airline you’re flying. So it’s important to do the math to see if it makes sense to use miles for an award or pay cash and use miles for a different flight in the future.
How to Earn Miles With the Citi American Airlines Credit Card
It’s easy for Citi American Airlines Platinum Select cardholders to boost and replenish their miles balances because you earn:
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent on American Airlines flights
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent at gas stations and restaurants
- 1X American Airlines miles per $1 spent on other purchases
There’s a special benefit for big spenders. You’ll earn a $125 American Airlines flight discount after you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your card year and renew your card.
How to Use Your American Airlines Miles
You can use American Airlines miles to book award flights directly on the airline. Or you can book partner award seats on these airlines:
- Alaska Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Royal Jordanian
You can book most partner award flights online, although there are a few exceptions, like Cathay Pacific, Etihad, or Japan Airlines. To book these partner award flights, you must call American Airlines at 800-433-7300.
Awesome Trips to Take With the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Bonus
Here are a few examples of what you can do with 60,000 American Airlines miles:
- Book 8 short-haul flights within the US or Canada. One-way flights 500 miles or less cost only 7,500 American Airlines miles
- Book a round-trip award ticket to Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru for 40,000 American Airlines miles in coach
- Get 2 round-trip coach award tickets within the continental US (award seats cost 25,000 American Airlines miles each)
- Book a round-trip coach ticket to Europe for 60,000 American Airlines miles
- Book a round-trip coach ticket to Hawaii for 45,000 American Airlines miles
The above examples are the cost of low-level Saver award seats. These are the cheapest award flights you can book, which sometimes require you to be flexible with your travel dates. That said, American Airlines also offers standard award flights you can book without having to worry about blackout dates. Although these require you to use WAY more miles.
Booking Example: Los Angeles to Prague Round-Trip (~$1,000 Value)
Here’s how you could redeem 60,000 American Airlines miles from the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select for a bucket-list adventure in Europe. I found tons of available award seats this summer between the US and Prague, Czech Republic – and it’s super simple to search and use your miles.
Head over to aa.com and enter your search criteria (departure and destination airport, dates, and number of passengers). Be sure to click “Redeem Miles” otherwise you’ll just see paid prices. In this example I’ve searched for flights between Los Angeles and Prague. Click “Search” to proceed.
Note: You don’t have to be signed into your AA account to search, but you’ll be prompted to do so if you want to continue with a booking.
The next screen shows available low-level saver award coach seats in green. You’ll see there are seats available on and around our travel dates. Confirm your dates and hit “Continue“.
You’ll then have the opportunity to select specific flights for your outbound and return. For flights to Europe, it’s best to avoid British Airways for the transatlantic segment because you’ll be dinged with massive taxes and fees (you can filter out British Airways flights by deselecting the British Airways checkbox).
Once you’ve selected your flights, you’ll be brought to a final booking screen with a summary of your trip. In this case, you’ll pay 60,000 American Airlines miles and ~$53 in taxes and fees.
From here, you’ll be prompted to enter traveler and payment information before you finalize the booking. You’ll receive a confirmation number shortly after via email. It’s really not much different from searching for a paid flight!
To compare, this exact itinerary retails for ~$1,018 if you paid cash. That’s an excellent value from a single card welcome bonus (and a great way to visit an amazing destination like Prague).
The same principles apply if you’re searching for award flights to Hawaii, South America, within the US, or anywhere American Airlines (or their partners) fly. For more on how to use your miles, check out our full guide to American Airlines miles.
Benefits of the Citi American Airlines Credit Card

Besides a lucrative sign-up bonus, there are other ongoing benefits that make the Citi American Airlines credit card worth adding to your wallet.
American Airlines Travel Benefits
With the Citi American Airlines credit card, you’ll get:
- Free first checked bag for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation (domestic flights only)
- Preferred boarding for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation
- 25% off eligible in-flight purchases when you use your card on American Airlines flights
- Reduced Mileage Awards – get discounts up to 7,500 miles round-trip on award flights to certain airports
Be sure to bookmark our Reduced Mileage Awards page, as we update the available cities whenever American Airlines makes a change!
Preferred boarding is a wonderful perk. Isn’t it annoying when the passenger in front of you jams 3 bags into the overhead bin and leaves you with nowhere to put your luggage? Well, you can avoid being the last person to board with the preferred boarding perk you get with the Citi American Airlines card. You’ll board in group 5, which is better than being in 6, 7, 8, or 9 and having to check your bag at the gate.
Citi Price Rewind
Citi Price Rewind is a unique perk you won’t find on many credit cards. When you pay for registered items at select online merchants, Citi will automatically check for a lower price at other merchants.
If the same item is found at a lower price within 60 days of your initial purchase date, you may receive reimbursement of the price difference. To be eligible for coverage, you must pay for the item at least in part with your Citi American Airlines credit card.
Coverage is limited to the lesser of $200 or the amount charged to your card. And the maximum coverage is $1,000 per calendar year.
By paying for an eligible item with the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card, you can extend the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional 24 months (total coverage between both the manufacturer’s warranty and extended warranty cannot exceed 84 months).
I have a firsthand story of why the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card is amazing for purchase protection, like extended warranty coverage.
My friend’s $2,500 flat screen television recently stopped working just after the manufacturer’s warranty expired. I asked him what card he paid with and to check the extended warranty benefits. Sure enough, he paid with the Citi American Airlines card.
With this coverage, Citi will repair or replace the item. Or reimburse you up to the amount charged on the card (up to $10,000). My friend filed a claim and received a $2,500 reimbursement from Citi for the full cost of the television!
You can check the complete Guide to Benefits to check exclusions and to learn how to file a claim.
When you pay for travel with your Citi American Airlines card, including award flight taxes & fees, you’ll get these coverages:
- Baggage delay – Get up to $100 per covered traveler if your bags are delayed 6+ hours
- Trip delay – Get up to $500 per covered traveler to pay for meals and hotels if your trip is delayed 12+ hours
- Trip cancellation & interruption – You may be reimbursed up to $5,000 per covered traveler per trip if the trip is cancelled or interrupted for an eligible reason
Having automatic travel protection is a fantastic perk that can save you a lot of money in the long run!
Is the American Airlines Credit Card Worth the Annual Fee?
The card has a $99 annual fee, which waived for the first 12 months. This means you can test out the card for ~11 months and decide if it’s worth keeping for another year. If you fly American Airlines, the free checked baggage perk alone could be enough to make the card worth keeping. Read our post on why the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select is worth it.

Who Is Eligible for the Citi American Airlines Card?
Remember, Citi will NOT let you earn the sign-up bonus from more than one personal card of the same “brand” within 24 months. For example, if you’ve opened or closed the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard® in the past 24 months, you would NOT be eligible for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® sign-up bonus.
It’s a great time to consider applying for the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select credit card to boost your stash of American Airlines miles. Plus, you can earn a $125 American Airlines flight discount after you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your card year and renew your card.
Collecting American Airlines miles can make a lot of sense, even if you never fly on the airline. Because you can redeem miles for award flights on partner airlines, like British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, and several others!
