Whether you travel on American Airlines a lot or not, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® could be a great addition to your wallet because of its benefits and perks.
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard is now offering a limited-time sign-up bonus of 60,000 American Airlines miles after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.
I opened this card not long ago because of the great welcome bonus. But there are lots other benefits and perks that come with the Citi American Airlines Platinum card.
Benefits & Perks of the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select Card
Remember, Citi won’t let you earn the sign-up bonus from more than one personal card of the same “brand” within 24 months. For example, if you’ve opened or closed the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard® in the past 24 months, you would NOT be eligible for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® sign-up bonus.
But, you can still qualify for the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card’s sign-up bonus if you have or have had either of these Citi American Airlines cards:
- CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®
- American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card
1. No Annual Fee for the First Year
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select has a $99 annual fee, but the great news is that it is waived for the first 12 months. That means you can earn the bonus and try out the card for ~11 months or so before you need to decide whether or not you want to keep it.
So, there’s no extra expense or risk in trying the card out.
2. Earn Bonus Points for Purchases
The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select now offers even more ways to earn miles. You’ll earn:
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent on American Airlines purchases
- 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent at gas stations and restaurants
- 1X American Airlines mile per $1 spent on other purchases
Being able to earn bonus points on common expenses like gas stations and restaurants makes it easy to boost your miles balance with everyday spending.
3. Free Checked Bags
No one likes paying for checked bags, but with this card in your wallet, you don’t have to. On domestic American Airlines itineraries, your first checked bag is FREE! This benefit applies to you plus up to 4 companions on the same reservation. This can be a huge money saver when traveling with family – that’s up to a $150 savings each way for a family of five!
Even if you and your partner only fly American Airlines once a year, you could save $120 on baggage charges for 2 people on a round-trip flight. That more than offsets the card’s annual fee!
4. American Airlines Flight Discount
This benefit rewards you with a $100 flight discount, for flights originating in the US, after you spend $20,000 on purchases during your card membership year. The discount comes after renewing your card. And the spending requirement works out to about ~$1,667 in spending per month, which is very achievable for many folks.
Now, whether or not it’s worth putting $20,000 spending per year on this card to earn a $100 discount is up to you. If you are a big spender or really just want one credit card, then maybe it is. Personally, I would rather spread that spend out over a few of the best travel credit cards to earn more sign-up bonuses. But you should do what you are comfortable with.
Note: This benefit is being upgraded in the coming months. All flight discount certificates issued after May 1, 2019, will be for $125 and will require the same $20,000 in purchases in a card member year to earn.
5. Preferred Boarding
With so many people utilizing overhead bins to try to avoid checking bags, preferred boarding is more important than ever. This perk allows you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation to board in Group 5, which is before the general economy boarding. You will have plenty of overhead bin space and will be comfortably in your seat before the masses board!
6. 10% Rebate on Redeemed American Airlines Miles
Here’s another great perk offered by the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard.
Cardholders will receive a 10% rebate on all redeemed American Airlines miles (maximum rebate is 10,000 miles per calendar year). For example, if you have this card and purchase a flight for 50,000 American Airlines miles, you will receive a 5,000-mile rebate!
Sadly, this perk is going away on May 1, 2019. So if you want to take advantage of it be sure to book your American Airlines award travel no later than April 30, 2019.
7. 25% Off In-Flight Food & Beverage Purchases
When you use your Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card to make eligible in-flight purchases (on American Airlines flights) you’ll get a 25% discount. This discount applies to in-flight food & beverage purchases, but not to Wi-Fi.
If you want a discount on your American Airlines Wi-Fi purchase you’ll need to use the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®.
8. Access to Reduced Mileage Awards
The Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card is one of several American Airlines cards that grant you access to Reduced Mileage Awards.
This ongoing promotion is a list of 150+ airports that you can book discounted American Airlines saver award flights to or from.
To learn move about these deals, read our guide to American Airlines Reduced Mileage Awards, which is updated regularly as the list of eligible airports changes.
9. Citi Price Rewind
Citi Price Rewind is a unique perk for saving money. When you pay for registered items at select online merchants, Citi will automatically check for a lower price at other merchants.
If the same item is found at a lower price within 60 days of your initial purchase date, you may receive reimbursement of the price difference. To be eligible for coverage, you must pay for the item at least in part with your Citi American Airlines credit card.
You can get reimbursed up to $200 or the amount charged to your card per item. But the maximum you can get back in a calendar year is $1,000.
10. Extended Warranty
By paying for an eligible item with the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card, you can extend the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional 24 months (total coverage between both the manufacturer’s warranty and extended warranty cannot exceed 7 years).
This protection is great because you can be reimbursed up to the amount charged on the card (up to $10,000). But this benefit doesn’t apply to some big ticket items, like boats and cars.
11. 90 Day Return Protection
If you pay for an eligible item with your Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card and you try to return the item within 90 days of purchase but the merchant won’t take it back, you’ll be covered. With this coverage, you can be refunded the purchase price of the item up to $300 per item and $1,000 per year.
To be eligible for this coverage you must pay for the item in full with your card.
12. Baggage Delay & Lost Baggage Insurance
If your baggage doesn’t arrive at your destination within 6 hours of your arrival you can be reimbursed up to $100 per covered traveler. Or if your baggage is lost, stolen, or damaged you can be reimbursed up to $3,000 per person per trip for up to $10,000 in total for all covered travelers.
As long as you used your Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card (or American Airlines miles) to pay for at least part of the travel, this coverage will apply.
13. Trip Cancellation & Interruption Coverage
The cost of a nonrefundable trip may be reimbursed up to $5,000 per covered traveler per trip if the trip is cancelled or interrupted for an eligible reason. This coverage applies if at least a portion of your trip was paid for with your Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card. But you’ll only be reimbursed up to the actual amount you charge to the card or $5,000, whichever is smaller.
Eligible interruptions include things like severe weather or natural disasters, and certain illnesses or personal issues.
14. Trip Delay Insurance
If your travel is delayed by 12+ hours you can be reimbursed up to $500 per covered traveler. The coverage pays for extra expenses incurred as part of your delay such as accommodations, transportation, clothing, toiletries, or meals.
To qualify for this coverage you need to pay for at least part of your trip with your Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card or have used American Airlines miles to book your travel.
15. Worldwide Car Rental Insurance
When you pay for your entire rental with your Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card you are covered for damage or theft for up to $50,000. This coverage applies to car rental periods of up to 31 days.
This insurance is primary if you’re renting outside the US, but for rentals within the US, it is secondary coverage. So it’s not the best credit card to use for a car rental. I usually pay for my rental cars with my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card because it comes with primary rental car insurance for rentals within the US, as long as you decline the rental agency’s insurance coverage.
16. No Foreign Transaction Fees
Some credit cards charge 3% every time you use your card overseas or to make purchases in a foreign currency. When you’re on vacation or booking travel that extra expense can add up quickly.
Thankfully, the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select card doesn’t have any foreign transaction fees. So it’s okay to bring it along on your next European adventure.
17. Roadside Dispatch
If you’ve got car trouble (within the US) this card comes with a roadside dispatch service to send help for:
- Towing and winching
- Jump starts
- Flat tire changes (when a spare is available)
- Lock-out service (when the key is in the vehicle)
- Delivery of up to 2 gallons of fuel
You’ll need to call 866-918-4670 when you’re in need of assistance. Just be sure to get a quote on the price because this isn’t a complimentary service.
