Looking to really boost your American Airlines miles balance to save money on airfare?  Consider the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®.

This card has the one of the best sign-up bonuses among any of the American Airlines credit cards, including the Citi personal American Airlines cards or Barclays American Airlines credit cards.  You can earn 70,000 American Airlines miles after meeting minimum spending requirements.  That’s enough for a one-way Business Class award flight to Abu Dhabi.  Or 9 short-haul flights within the US!

Folks in Chicago and Charlotte Can Book Short-Haul Flights to Awesome Cities Like Nashville for 7,500 Miles! Using Miles This Way Can Really Stretch the Value of the 70,000-Mile Citi American Airlines Small Business Card!

I’m considering adding this card to my wallet and using the sign-up bonus toward a First Class ticket on Etihad from Australia to Abu Dhabi, which costs 100,000 American Airlines miles.  Paying cash for the same ticket would cost more than $9,000.  So earning this sign-up bonus could put a nice dent in the number of miles I’d need for this award and help me get a really neat flying experience!

You can apply for the Citi American Airlines small business card here.  Besides the lucrative sign-up bonus, one of the huge advantages of considering this card is it will NOT appear on your personal credit report.  Savvy miles & points enthusiasts know that limiting the number of cards that appear on your personal credit report won’t impact your chances of opening new cards with other banks that have strict card limits.

Keep in mind, the card’s annual fee is waived the first year!  So you can test out the perks for ~10 or ~11 months to decide if paying the annual fee in the second year is worth it.

When you sign-up for the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select small business credit card, you’ll earn 70,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 4 months of opening your account.

The best way to use the 70,000 American Airlines mile bonus depends on your travel goals!  For example, I prefer to redeem miles for luxurious international First Class flying experiences I wouldn’t otherwise book with cash.  But lots of folks love the idea of using miles for quick weekend trips or getaways to visit friends and family.

If you plan ahead, having miles could help you save money on holiday travel.  For example, I found round-trip flights from Denver to Charlotte around Thanksgiving.  Cash prices for flights around this time tend to increase.  I found flights for ~$500+.

But you could use 25,000 American Airlines miles for the same round-trip award flight.  With the miles you’ll earn from the Citi American Airlines small business card bonus and minimum spending, you’ll nearly have enough miles for 3 round-trip flights (70,000 mile sign-up bonus + at least 4,000 miles from minimum spending)!

Or you could use 65,000 American Airlines miles for a round-trip flight to Tokyo.  These tickets can sell for more than $1,500 depending on your departure city.

Keep in mind, the amount of taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges can vary by award flight depending on which airline you’re flying.  So it’s important to do the math to see if it makes sense to use miles for an award or pay cash and use miles for a different flight in the future.

How to Earn Miles With the Citi American Airlines Credit Card

It’s easy for Citi American Airlines Platinum Select small business cardholders to boost and replenish their miles balances because you earn:

  • 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent on American Airlines flights
  • 2X American Airlines miles per $1 spent at certain telecommunications, rental car merchants, and at gas stations
  • 1X American Airlines mile per $1 spent on other purchases

You can use American Airlines miles to book award flights directly on the airline.  Or you can book partner award seats on these airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Etihad
  • Finnair
  • Iberia
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Qantas
  • Royal Jordanian

You can book most partner award flights online, although there are a few exceptions, like Cathay Pacific, Etihad, or Japan Airlines.  To book these partner award flights, you must call American Airlines at 800-433-7300.

Want to know what you can do with 70,000 American Airlines miles?  Here are a few examples:

  • 45,000 American Airlines miles for a round-trip coach award flight to Hawaii (or 40,000 miles during off-peak travel dates)
  • 50,000 American Airlines miles for 2 round-trip coach award flights within the continental US
  • 60,000 American Airlines miles for a one-way Business Class award flight to Korea
  • 40,000 American Airlines miles for a round-trip coach award flight to Northern South America (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru)
  • 65,000 American Airlines miles for a round-trip coach award flight to Tokyo during off-peak travel dates
  • 67,500 American Airlines miles for 9 short-haul flights within the US or Canada.  One-way flights 500 miles or less cost only 7,500 American Airlines miles
  • 70,000 American Airlines miles for a one-way Business Class award flight to India

The above examples are the cost of low-level Saver award seats.  These are the cheapest award flights you can book, which sometimes require you to be flexible with your travel dates.  That said, American Airlines also offers standard award flights you can book without having to worry about blackout dates.  Although these require you to use more miles.

Benefits of the Citi American Airlines Credit Card

Besides a lucrative sign-up bonus, there are other ongoing benefits that make the Citi American Airlines small business credit card worth adding to your wallet.

American Airlines Travel Benefits

With the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select small business credit card, you’ll get:

  • Free first checked bag for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation (domestic American Airlines flights only)
  • Enjoy preferred boarding on American Airlines flights
  • 25% savings on in-flight Wi-Fi purchased with your card
  • Companion Certificate after you spend $30,000 or more in purchases during your card year and renew your card

The American Airlines companion certificate is an interesting benefit that can definitely save you money on airfare.  To use the certificate, the primary cardholder must purchase a round-trip coach ticket on an American Airlines flight within the continental US.  So you can NOT use it for flights to Alaska or Hawaii.

After purchasing qualifying airfare, you’ll pay a $99 companion ticket fee plus ~$22 to ~$43 in taxes and fees to add a friend or loved one to your flight.  You’re only eligible to redeem the certificate one time.  And you can NOT redeem the certificate for travel on oneworld partners like British Airways.

The terms & conditions also say there are blackout dates, which are provided when you receive the certificate.

Complimentary Employee Cards

If you have employees in your business, you can add them to your account and provide them with employee cards.  The nice part about this is all of the miles they earn from purchases will accumulate in your account.  Adding employees to your account can also help you meet minimum spending faster to unlock the sign-up bonus!

Is the American Airlines Credit Card Worth the Annual Fee?

The card has a $99 annual fee, which waived for the first 12 months.  This means you can test out the card for ~11 months and decide if it’s worth keeping for another year.  If you fly American Airlines, the free checked baggage perk alone could be enough to make the card worth keeping.

Does the Citi American Airlines card have a foreign transaction fee?

No.

Hi, thanks for the article & lots of great info! It’s always a fell good everytime regular folks like us read a piece and it states this & that sign up bonus can get you a one or RT business class to such & such a place! But what’s the reality of that for couples or families? Example, we are a family of 3 people & looking for a plan to fly RT to Japan in business with a stopover in Southeast Asia (or to Southease Asia w/a stopover in Japan). I have a couple qestions:

1)Which cards/miles/points do we sign up for?

2) Which airline miles do we use? Which airlines do we fly in?

3) How to search for it?

Thanks!

I should add the same week Citi denied me, I got Chase Ink Cash approved and a week later AmEx Hilton Business card approved.

I have been told that one needs to have a registered sole proprietorship to be eligible.

Author

You shouldn’t have to register a sole proprietorship to be eligible. As long as you have a for-profit small business or side venture, you should be eligible. For example, I don’t have a formal corporate entity when I apply for small business cards. I just enter my name and social security number on the card application. That said, if the bank asks for backup information, my tax returns do show business income on a separate schedule.

So is it as easy to get this business card as it is for a Chase Business card? Any small “business” should qualify?

Author

@Brett – If you have a for-profit small business or side hustle, you should be eligible for Citi small business cards. I qualify for small business cards by including information about my eBay drop shipping business.

I’ve never had a Citi business card and they denied me for a history of late pays. None of my other business cards have ever been late. My personal credit report does not show any late pays. Citi will not speak to you and FB chat gives you a number to call that is a recording only.

Author

@Rhonda – That’s frustrating. I’ve had success in the past connecting with the Citi reconsideration department when my application wasn’t approved instantly. I might try calling back to see if you can connect with someone else.
