How to Book It

You can find American Airlines and Alaska Airlines award flights on the American Airlines website.  Look for “SAAver” (low-level) award seats because these are the only kind of award seats you can book with an airline partner’s miles.

I Found Plenty of Days in June With FOUR Available Award Seats From Seattle Non-Stop to Maui! Perfect for a Family Getaway Over Summer Break!

You can book American Airlines flights on the British Airways website.

But for Alaska Airlines flights, you must call British Airways at 800-452-1201 to book your award tickets to Hawaii.

Be sure to take note of the flight dates and times so you can easily book your award ticket.  And ask British Airways to waive the phone booking fee because these Alaska Airlines flights can NOT be booked online.

What If You Have to Connect?

British Airways charges per segment flown.  So if you have to connect, you’ll pay more miles.

But it can be worth connecting because you can get a good deal even if you pay for each segment.

Connecting at Another Airport Isn’t So Bad, Especially When You’re Taking Award Flights to Paradise!

Keep in mind British Airways is changing their award chart on February 2, 2016.  From then on, all flights under 1,150 miles will cost 7,500 British Airways Avios points (until then, flights under 650 miles are 4,500 British Airways Avios points, and flights over 650 miles and under 1,150 miles are 7,500 British Airways Avios points).

For example, folks in Albuquerque can pay 7,500 British Airways Avios points to fly on American Airlines to Los Angeles.  And then pay 12,500 British Airways Avios points to continue on to Hawaii.

In total, you’ll pay 20,000 British Airways Avios points each way, which is still a good deal to Hawaii (and less than United Airlines charges).

Remember, you can always use the British Airways award flight calculator to add up each segment to check how many miles you’ll need for your trip.

And you can check Wandering Aramean’s Avios calculator tool to see all the places you can fly from your home airport non-stop with British Airways Avios points.

Singapore Airlines Miles Save the Day!

It’s a good idea to check flight prices using British Airways Avios points AND Singapore Airlines miles.  And pick the flights you like better.  Especially if you’re in a city where the prices are similar, or if you have to connect.

As always, run the numbers to find the best deal for you before you book!

You Can Visit 4 Different Hawaiian Islands! Which 1 Will You Pick?

I used Wandering Aramean’s Avios calculator tool to check which islands folks on the West Coast (or Dallas) can fly into:

  • Honolulu (Oahu)
  • Kahului (Maui)
  • Kona (Hawaii)
  • Lihue (Kauai)

Let’s look at each one!

1.   Honolulu

Honolulu is Hawaii’s cultural and economic center, and its biggest city.

You can hike the Diamond Head Summit Trail, catch waves at world-famous Waikiki Beach, or enjoy fine dining and fun bars during a night out on the town.

Swim, Surf, Hike, or Enjoy the Culture of Honolulu!

While in Honolulu, consider visiting the USS Arizona Memorial to the Pearl Harbor attack, which is ~30 minutes away.  It’s an important part of history and my friend says it’s worth the trip.

2.   Kahului

You’ll fly into Kahului as your starting point to explore the laid-back island of Maui.

3.   Kona

Kona is on the Big Island of Hawaii, and is definitely worth a visit.

You’ll find all types of landscapes there, from pastures in the northwest, to black sand beaches in the southeast.  And, it’s the only US state where coffee grows!  Try a cup of Kona coffee at 1 of the roasting plants near the airport!

You can see active nature including flowing magma at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Friends of mine visited the Big Island and had a great trip!  Give yourself a few days there to explore every corner.

4.   Lihue

Emily and I used American Airlines miles and United Airlines for our vacation to Kauai.  Of course, you can redeem British Airways Avios points and Singapore Airlines miles for the same flights we took to the Garden Island! 🙂

We had a great time at Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific!

Chase Ultimate Rewards or British Airways Avios Points?

Chase Sapphire Preferred

Link:  Chase Sapphire Preferred

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you’ll earn 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you spend $4,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

This is the best bonus I’ve seen on the card.  And it’s the #1 card I recommend if you’re new to miles and points.

Chase Ultimate Rewards is my favorite points program.  Because the points are flexible, they transfer 1:1 to airline and hotel partners like British Airways, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines, and Hyatt if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold cards.

If you have the Chase Freedom or Chase Ink Cash cards, you can combine your points and transfer them to any travel partner as long as you have 1 of the other cards!

How To Fly To Hawaii With British Airways Avios Points

Earn 2X Chase Ultimate Rewards per $1 Spent on Travel and Dining, No Matter Where in World You Go!

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are easy to earn with everyday spending.  For example, you can earn up to 15,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when shopping at Amazon through December 31, 2015, with the the Chase Freedom card if you activated the offer in time.

For folks who aren’t near 1 of the cities with non-stop flights, Singapore Airlines miles is a better choice.  With Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you can transfer to both British Airways or Singapore Airlines for the most options!

Chase British Airways

Link:   Chase British Airways – Earn a Total of 100,000 British Airways Avios Points

Chase also has a fantastic offer to earn a total of 100,000 British Airways Avios points with the Chase British Airways card.

That’s enough to fly a family of 4 round-trip from the West Coast to any island in Hawaii!  Or it’s enough for 8 one-way flights!

How To Fly To Hawaii With British Airways Avios Points

Take the Whole Family on a Hawaiian Vacation!

If you’re near a city with non-stop service to Hawaii for 12,500 British Airways Avios points, this card might be a better choice because you can get more free trips out of the sign-up bonus.

Just sure you’re comfortable meeting the full minimum spending requirement before you apply!

Read my series on how to book British Airways award flights like a pro, and my review of the Chase British Airways card offer to decide if you should sign-up.

And you might even decide to get the Chase British Airways card even if you don’t want to spend what’s required to earn the most bonus points.

Or, Get Both!

It’s possible to get both cards.

But Chase has tightened up on their approvals, especially if you’ve opened more than 5 new credit cards within the past 24 months.  However, some folks report success opening new Chase cards anyway.  If you have a good relationship with Chase, they may decide to extend new credit to you.

How To Fly To Hawaii With British Airways Avios Points

Think Carefully About How You Want to Use Your Points. And Remember, You Can Always Get Both!

That said, you should apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred if that’s your top choice.  Because Chase might not approve both applications.

Keep in mind the rule applies to Chase cards that earn Ultimate Rewards points like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, but not co-branded cards like the Chase British Airways card.

Both cards could add up to a LOT of Big Travel to Hawaii!

Where to Stay?

Check out my posts about where to stay with your hotel points:

Bottom Line

You’ll earn earn 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after meeting the minimum spending requirements with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

And transfer your points directly to British Airways and Singapore Airlines at a 1:1 ratio.

If you’re in a city with non-stop service on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines to Hawaii, the Chase British Airways card is ideal because it has a total of 100,000 British Airways Avios points as a sign-up bonus.  A family of 4 could visit Hawaii and redeem points for round-trip coach award flights!

Or, get both!  But keep in mind Chase has tightened up on their approvals, although there have been lots of exceptions.  Still, I recommend applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred 1st if that’s your top choice.

You can use British Airways Avios points for award flights to Hawaii on airline partners American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.  It’s a fantastic option for folks on the West Coast, because many flights are 12,500 British Airways Avios points each way!

And if you’re not on the West Coast, remember you can book United Airlines flights to Hawaii with Singapore Airlines miles.

  1. I don’t want to hi-jack this thread, but got a question, what is the best use of miles and points to fly FC to hawaii? I’ve read Korean is the best, is this correct?

  2. Hello. I just took a last minute flight to Reno from Phoenix to ski some fresh snow. The British airways miles were only 4500 each way vs $350 cash each way. . However I was expecting to get a free bag on American because I have the Barclays card and the citi business American card. Does anyone know if the baggage benefit doesn’t apply on flights booked through British airways on American? Or am I booking it wrong. I tried to change seats but I booked the flight 3 hours before it left so I was never able to put my American Airlines stuff in the itinerary. Any help on getting the free bags on American would be appreciated.

  3. I am new to the rewards game. I started in February trying to reach a goal of a 1 week trip to hawaii for our 5 year anniversary and had all my points for the entire trip last week. I was so excited to start booking and had my whole flight plan all planned out using my British airways points and american website. I called British airways and they answered right away and I was immediately shut down. The lady on the phone told me I can not use Americans website to book a trip using British airways avios. I told her there were no flights on the British website to hawaii and she said I just need to keep checking back. I hung up the phone and I was furious!!! I was up all night stewing and I knew this all had to be to good to be true. Then the next day I woke up and researched it all over the Internet and they all said the same thing, I was doing it just as all point bloggers said. So I called British airways again and this time it was like music to my ears. The lady on the other end had me all taken care of in a matter of minutes. For a grand total of 68,000 british airways miles and $22.40 my husband and I are on our way from idaho to hawaii in march. We have all our hotels, an island hop, and even some activities covered with points and a grand total of $102.40. Thank you for being my guide to planning this!!!

  4. I recently used my avios from the BA Visa 100k promo to book 5 RT tix from Anchorage to Honolulu. Super slick. And remember to ask BA to waive telephone booking fees if booking Alaska because it cannot be done online.

  5. Krista — did you try a different approach with the 3rd agent you spoke with? Curious if there’s specific language that makes them more likely to help book the flight via Avios.

  6. Just the post I was looking for…I am saving both British Airways and Singapore Airlines.
    We are a family of 3 – 2 adults and 1 infant.

British Airways: Thanks to your 100K Pointer, we are accumulating these, and expect the same.
Singapore Airlines: Have 60K points via Citi Thankyou Premier. How much do I need for our family for round-trip?

What do you recommend between these two for round-trip travel from Atlanta region to Hawaii?
Also, with BA avios, there does not seem to be many flights from Southeast via Dallas to Hawaii. Are AASaver award seats only available for booking via British Airways?

  7. I find award flights (saaver) on AA website, but these flights are not available in British Airways reward flights booking. What do you recommend? Should I call BA customer service? Will the phone fees be waived?

  8. @Tony – It depends on what type of miles you have access to, and which award seats are available. Korean Air and Singapore Airlines are both fantastic options!

@Joey – You only get the baggage benefit on flights sold and operated by the airline. Because your flight was sold by British Airways, the checked bag perk wouldn’t apply. Hope that helps!

@Krista – Congrats on your trip, and thank you for reading! I’m so glad it all worked out for you! The 1st time is the most challenging. Booking your 2nd trip will be a breeze in comparison!

@Thomas – That’s an excellent way to redeem your miles. And thanks for the reminder about the phone booking fee!

@Jacob – It sounds like Singapore Airlines would be best for your situation. You’ll pay 35,000 Singapore Airline miles round-trip per person for a coach award ticket to Hawaii.

Remember you always look for low-level award seats when you book with an airline partner:

    http://millionmilesecrets.com/2015/12/13/what-to-look-for-before-you-book-an-award-seat-on-an-airline-partner/

I hope that helps – good luck finding flights for your trip, and thanks for reading!

@Nancy – You can call to ask them what’s available, then book it yourself while they’re on the phone. If you still can’t book it, ask them to waive the fee and explain it’s not possible to book online.

    Good luck!

  9. Nancy is correct, while there are many available award flights on AA (saaver), none of them are available on BA website and when calling, they tell you the same. When asked why, I was told “we only see what AA releases to us for the rewards flights”. So while almost all websites reference going to AA to search, it’s not all together accurate by any means.

  10. Is this still current as of 05/05/16?

  11. @Justin Tang – British Airways hasn’t updated their award prices on these routes since the post went up, so they should all be current as of today!

  12. I have read and reread this multiple times, and am somewhat confused. When I look on BA, there is no award availability. When I look at AA, there is some award availability, bit is shows in AA award currency, not Avios. How do I know the Avios cost this way? -The flights I am interested in are on AK Air,i think, but don’t seem to show on the AA site as AK air- So I am guessing I need to call BA to book anything at all, and have the flights I want from AA in my hand specifically? And if I am successful in booking, these would show under my BA account? (I am so confused)

  13. @JM – You’re right! You’d need to call British Airways to book your award seat. And your flight details will appear in your British Airways account.

Here’s my series on how to book British Airways award tickets, which might help you a bit more: http://millionmilesecrets.com/2015/02/03/book-british-airways-award-flights-like-a-pro-part-11-the-best-domestic-awards-using-british-airways-avios-points/

Good luck booking your ticket! You’ll be a pro in no time!

  14. It doesn’t appear that AA has any SAAver tickets from NY to HNL, any idea why they’re no longer available?
Is there an alternative way to book them?

  15. Hi, I tried many times over a couple of years to use my Avios on American or Alaska flights via the website or the US BA office. No luck, very frustrating. Two weeks ago I stayed up late (in California) and called the London office the minute it opened. I had the Alaska website opened, specified the flights I wanted, and was booked r/t from Oakland to Kauai for 25,000 Avios. The agent waited on the line with me until the flight was confirmed both on the BA and Alaska websites. I had been holding the same flights for 45,000 mile…I still have enough Avios for another ticket, and I will call that same London office when it’s time to book again. Using my Hyatt credit card bonus of two free nights at their resort on Kauai, booking my car through the Chase UR portal (much cheaper than Costco – and thanks to this website for letting us know about that)…still trying to figure out the other six nights…I have an airBnB booked but free would be so much better! Could us Avios for a couple of hotel nights but the value isn’t great.

  16. Having the same issue as others. SAAver filght listed on AA.com with Alaska Air for 22.5k Each way but looking on British Airways shows no availability. I mean none, nada, ever that I can see.

Do you have to call BA to get the true availability of Alaska Air awards flights ?
