Did You Know You Can Get From the West Coast to Hawaii for Just 25,000 British Airways Avios Points Round-Trip? There Are Credit Card Sign-Up Bonuses That Will Give You Enough Points for TWO of Those Round-Trip Flights!

There are lots of non-stop flights on Alaska Airlines from the West Coast to the Hawaiian Islands.  And because British Airways has a distance-based award chart, it only costs 25,000 British Airways Avios points to fly round-trip!

I’ll show you how to book these cheap award flights!

Getting to Hawaii Using British Airways Avios Points on Alaska Airlines

Here’s how you can use British Airways Avios points to book flights to Hawaii.

How to Find Non-Stop Flights

Alaska Airlines has non-stop flights to Hawaii from:

  • Anchorage
  • Bellingham
  • Oakland
  • Portland
  • Sacramento
  • San Diego
  • San Jose
  • Seattle

Let’s say you’re a family of 4 and want to book flights from Seattle to Hawaii.  You can find non-stop Alaska Airlines flights to Hawaii by searching the American Airlines site.

Note: So you’re using your British Airways Avios points to book Alaska Airlines flights using the American Airlines web site.  When you’re done, you’ll feel mighty clever! 😉

Enter Seattle (SEA) to Honolulu (HNL) and your travel dates into the search box.  Then check the “Redeem Miles” box to find award flights.

Start by Searching for Alaska Airlines Award Seats on American Airlines

You will then see a calendar.  Change the number of stops tab on the left to “Non-stop only.”

Select “Non-Stop Only” and Click on “Show Full Calendar” If Your Travel Dates Are Flexible

Most dates have a light green box, which means they’re Saver awards.

You Can Only Book Saver Award Flights With British Airways Avios Points

But it’s not always easy to find award seats for 4 or more people available on the same flight.  If you can’t find 4 award seats, try searching for 2 or 3 award seats instead.

You can possibly book 2 or 3 award ticket and check to see if more award seats are available later.

If You’re Having Trouble Finding 4 Award Seats, Try Adjusting Your Search to 2 or 3 Travelers

Next, choose your flight times.

Select Your Departure Time, Then Click the Return Box to Pick a Flight for Your Trip Home

Take note of your flight numbers and dates of travel.  Then call British Airways at 800-452-1201 to book your award tickets to Hawaii.

Note:  British Airways sometimes charges a fee for booking award flights over the phone.  But you can often get this fee waived by pointing out that calling is the only way to book these flights.

These flights cost 22,500 American Airlines miles each way.  But you can use the British Airways Avios Calculator to see how many British Airways Avios points this trip will cost.

The Cheapest Way To Hawaii From The West Coast With Miles Points
You’ll Only Need 12,500 British Airways Avios Points Each Way!

So you’ll save 80,000 miles on 4 round-trip flights to Hawaii by using British Airways Avios points instead of American Airlines miles (180,000 American Airlines miles for 4 round-trip tickets – 100,000 British Airways Avios Points for 4 round-trip tickets)!

After booking your flights, you can call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522 to reserve your seats.

Don’t Live Near an Alaska Airlines Hub?

Folks who don’t live in the 1 of the Alaska Airlines cities I mentioned above, can still book flights on Alaska Airlines to Hawaii.  But you’ll have to make a stop or two.  And because British Airways bases the cost of award flights on distance, it will cost you more miles.

For instance, if you’re flying out of Boise to Honolulu, 1 of your options is a stopover in Seattle.

Making a Stop Means You’re Traveling More Miles and Therefore It Will Cost You More British Airways Avios Points

Again, write down your flight numbers and dates.  Then call British Airways at 800-452-1201 to book your trip.

You can find out how many British Airways Avios points you’ll need by entering each segment separately into the British Airways Avios Calculator.

A 1-Way Flight From Boise to Seattle Will Cost 4,500 British Airways Avios Points

And the flight from Seattle to Honolulu will cost another 12,500 points.  So your trip will cost 17,000 British Airways Avios points each way or 34,000 points round-trip.  That’s still 11,000 less than the 45,000 miles a round-trip flight to Hawaii would cost on American Airlines.

I can confirm that as of April 2018, this still works, despite the mileage calculator being down. I booked a flight from San Jose to Maui and back to SFO for 25k per person round trip plus 2,500 (10%) for our infant. Thanks for the post!

Million Mile Secrets

That’s excellent news, Dan! Thanks for sharing!

The calculator is not valid in the region I live. I am assuming in the U.S. The picture here in the article is no longer valid on the BA website.

I’m not seeing an option for “redeem miles” on the site as of today. Is there another way? If so, what? I’d love to take the family to Hawaii with the 100k avios we have banked. Please help. Thanks.

Recently I could not find availability on BA from LAX to Hawaii because now most of the time AA don’t have direct flight from LAX to Hawaii for Economy Saver Award thus you could not book BA for 25k trip.

Hi, and thanks for this post! Do they have to be SAAVER awards in order for you to be able to use british airways avios for them?

Also, lets say were a family of five, do all 5 tickets need to be available by SAAVER? Or would just a couple seats avialable open up the ability to book via BA Avios?
