  1. by the way: that Hyatt Chase offer appears to be back up with the two free nights and low spend in 3 months.
    Thanks for a good site!

  2. Is this Chase Southwest 50k point card link for sure? The pricing and terms do not specifically mention the sign up bonus. Is there any way to be sure that I will receive 50k points after $2k spend? Thanks.

  3. The Southwest 50k offer says “Note: the bonus may be earned on one first-time personal and one first-time business Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card new account.” Does this mean that the 50k cannot be added to my 50k points I intend to earn with my Southwest Plus Personal Card? Can I get the 50k bonus from the Personal Premier and Personal Plus? Thanks again.

    • @Mario – The link takes me to a landing page with the offer details. Folks have got the bonus on each version of the card, but your experience could be different. Especially since the terms have changed.

  4. Do you know whether or not this note was just added to the Southwest 50k points offer or whether it has been there all along?

“Note: the bonus may be earned on one first-time personal and one first-time business Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Card new account.”

    Thanks.

    • @Mario – It has been there for a few months.

@Stan B – It is better than the 40K which is the regular offer. That said, you earn 2 free weekend nights with the Reserve AND Hilton Gold status (free breakfast and internet), so I prefer the Reserve if I have to choose only 1 card.

  5. I just got an offer to earn 50,000 Hilton HHonors™ Bonus Points after you spend $750 in purchases on the Card within your first 3 months of Card Membership for the NOT Reserve AmEX Hilton HHonors card (no annual fee). Does this sound like a good deal? I see that the reserve one can earn me a max of 60k, BUT with annual fee AND larger spend.

  7. What type of bills (car payment, insurance, etc.) can I pay where I can earn points on a rewards cc? I’m still shopping for a cc, I’m a frugal shopper so I’d like to know if bills (if only some of them) can actually be charged to a rewards cc for points. Thanks!

  8. I just saw this ad on my BoA login page. Free money for just paying bills on time!! A card to have for the rest of your life (just like Chase Freedom).

    BankAmericard® Better Balance Rewards™ MasterCard® Credit Card

    No Annual Fee†

Earn $25 per quarter when you pay more than the monthly minimum and pay on time each month. That can
be up to $100 towards your credit card balance each year

Get an additional $5 bonus per quarter if you have at least one other qualifying account with us

Cash back is automatically credited to your card balance

    Catch:
    1. you must have a payment due in each of the monthly cycles of the calendar quarter to be eligible for the quarterly cash reward;
    2. a zero balance or a credit balance does not qualify

  9. I currently have a regular Chase Sapphire card (applied 2 yrs ago, got the bonus and no annual fee). Can I apply for the Chase Sapphire Preffered card and get bonus? Are they same card type or different? Thanks! – DS-

    • @Van – You can’t pay bills directly with a credit card. But you can buy Vanilla Reloads at CVS and then load them to your Bluebird card and then pay bills with them.

@sv1010 – Seems like a nice deal for paying your bills!

@David S – You should be able to get both versions, but getting approved depends on your credit profile with the banks.

  10. I have CitiBusiness AAdvantage Visa card that earned me 50,000 AA miles.

Can I apply its MasterCard to get another 50,000 AA miles?

    Thanks.

  11. Been visiting your blog for some time; it is extremely informative and helpful. Each time I visit, I take away something new to help me in my travel for free initiative.

It has probably been mentioned before, but please consider adding a “Last Time Updated/Edited ” message on the top Hot Deals link so I would know if anything has been changed or added since the last time I viewed it? It is hard to tell if any changes or additions have been recently made.. or how current the offers are. Thanks and keep up the great info!

    • @Oldmanbob – Thanks for reading! I can add a “Last Time Updated” notation on the top, but I’m not sure how it will help folks. I update the list almost every few days if there are better offers etc. I do remove offers once they expire and readers are very good about commenting about better offers or when an offer has expired.

  12. I applied for 4 credit cards today and was told that my review was pending. One credit card came back and asked to verify my income with my actual tax statements. My salary is fairly high and I only have 3 credit cards so I’m not sure why I keep getting denied. Any suggestions?

  13. Darius & Emily,

Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts for everything you guys do! THANK YOU!

    4. Amex Gold Premier…Targeted 50k bonus! Instant!
    5. Barclay World Arrival…40k bonus…Instant!

Just a quick q’ regarding Amex Platinum Business (100K targeted offer), should I wait till the last day to apply or hold off till next year?

    Thanks a Million!

    • @MK – Do you have a long credit history? I’d also check your free credit reports from all 3 credit bureaus to make sure that there is nothing incorrect on your credit report.

@raj – You’re welcome! I’d apply for the AMEX targeted offer as soon as possible because you get $200 in airline incidentals per calendar year. So you can designate an airline in 2013 and also in 2014 and get ~$400 in travel credits.

@knoog – It is best for 1 person to apply for both cards. Because if the points don’t post, it will be hard to explain what happened!

  14. Hey Darius, for the Southwest cards, would it work if two different people, say my girlfriend and I, get a personal card each and designate the points to go to one Southwest rewards Account, either mine or hers? That way only one person would be going for the companion pass bonus but we would be able to travel together for two years as she would be my companion or vice versa. Does that work or does Southwest force you to use two different rewards accounts if the cards belong to two people?

  15. Darius, do you remember how soon your friends or family received an invitation through email from Chase after you signed up for the referral program, which is running until January 30? It said that within a week applicants would be contacted. I am afraid that the $200 bonus will expire if they wait a week just for me to get a referral bonus…

  16. Hi

I have a Citibank thank you preferred card & also recently got a southwest chase RR card

Could you help me figure out on which card do I get a better bang for my buck when it comes to getting rewarded for purchases etc

I most often use the Citi thank you points for Amazon shopping & guess will use the RR points for buying SW flights

  17. Hello! For cards in which the annual fee is waived in the first year, specifically the Chase Ink and Sapphire cards that have annual fees, will you be charged if you close the account before the first year?

Also, I know you can’t get the “bonus” twice.. But if I were to sign up for one of these cards and NOT make the minimum spend, can I cancel it, apply again later, and qualify for the bonus? (since I didn’t receive it the first time)

I’m thinking of getting one of these for a large purchase I might (but might not) make soon, which will depend on the price of the item reaching an acceptable level. If I make the purchase, the minimum spend is met. If I don’t, it’s likely I wouldn’t buy until end of 2014.

    Thanks for your help!

  18. is the 50k offer for SP is available link?

    • @Emily – It took about 3 to 5 days to get the email.

@akshat – It really depends on your goals. But I prefer the Southwest card because you earn more per $1 spent towards flights.

@Matt – You’re not charged the annual fee if you close the card. I’m not sure about your question, but some readers have suggested that you will get the bonus if you don’t meet the minimum spending the 1st time.

@smuel – I don’t believe it is available any more.

  19. Darius – I know the SW Premiere 50k is still alive but do you know if the business version is also still valid for the 50K promotion? There is no splash screen, just goes straight to the application! Thanks!

  20. Hello Daraius, I am new to credit card so please bear with me. I really hope you could help me with my questions below and I really appreciate it:

    1. What is the best cc for AMEX if I haven’t have any AMEX cc before? Mainly I fly to Asia (Japan, Korea, HK, Singapore) so I would like AMEX card that would allow me to use or transfer my point (at good ratio) to airlines like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Asiana, and other airlines that fly to Asia.

    2. I saw that you posted news about AMEX Gold Premier CC promo that offers 50k bonus points after meet the minimum spending. However I also heard that some people got 75k bonus points upon approval for same cc, can you please let me know how to do this and if you have the link that direct me there it would be great, I would like to use your referral link as a way to say thank you.

    3. Does the free Hilton Gold status still available?

    4. Also for Chase Hyatt cards, one of the perks is that I will get free Platinum membership status automatically upon approval? does this require me to have or become Gold Passport member prior applying? I never have Gold Passport or membership with Hyatt before.

  21. Darius, have had a good time reading your posts while learning a lot. I am pretty new and have only done the Marriott Rewards (got the 70k) and Southwest card offers (almost done 10k spend for CP in 2014-2015). I’d like to move on to the next one within the next month or two. I could sign up under Wife’s name as the other 3 cards are under mine, spread those credit inquiries out!

If you had a choice for your next Chase card, which of the following three would you pick and why? Regardless of the amount of spend being $3k or $5k (I can handle either) — looking for a UR reward card with the best sign up bonus.

    1) Chase Ink Plus
    2) Chase Ink Bold
    3) Chase Sapphire Preferred.

I see all seem to have the same $95 fee, waived for the first year, and both Ink cards have 50k bonus, while the Sapphire has 40k (+5k, I can add Wife as authorized user). Both Ink’s appear to have the same bonus point earning abilities, while the Sapphire doesn’t have as much. I can handle the $5k spend on the Ink cards and signing up as a Business Owner shouldn’t be an issue, so I guess bottom line is, which do you believe is the best from those three. I want the versatility of earning UR points for most daily spend (and some MS).

Or perhaps I’m missing some other better UR based chase card??

    Thanks!
    -SN

  22. Hey Everyone!
Just wanted to let everyone know that the Southwest RR Premier 50K link is working! I filled out the app on December 4th from the link on the HOT DEALs page. I was skeptical about whether or not the link would work or not, but I was just approved after calling the Reconsideration Line twice. 🙂 The agent confirmed that the sign up bonus was indeed 50k points after spending $2000 in the first 90 days! I was approved instantly for the Southwest RR Plus on November 16th. COMPANION PASS HERE I COME!!!

    • @Daniel – I’d consider the American Express Business Gold Rewards card, the Platinum card or the Premier Gold Rewards card. Keep in mind that you pay fuel surcharges when using miles with Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific etc. I’d wait until the 75,000 point offer comes back on the Business Gold Rewards card. You can get Hilton Gold status with a Milepoint premium membership or with the Citi Hilton Reserve card. If you don’t have a Hyatt Gold Passport number when you apply, Chase will create one for you.

@SN – I’d get both those cards and evaluate which one to keep when the annual fee is due. I personal have both because I like the 5X earning on the Ink card and the 2x points for travel and dining on the Sapphire Preferred.

      @Mario – Congrats!

  23. Hi! I had applied and was approved for Chase Ink Plus, Chase United & Hilton Amex Basic all on the same day last year in Jan. As I approach my one year anniversary I am thinking of cancelling the Chase United card as I have not used it much and avoid the annual fee. I don’t mind keeping the United one, had really applied for the 50k offer. I think I maybe spent 4-5k on the entire card in the year incl 2 international United Tickets. Does it make sense to keep this card around ? For the Ink Plus, I want to try to convince them to waive the annual fee as it is a good card to have. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to best approach this. Thanks.

  24. Hi Darius, is the Chase Marriott Rewards Visa Card churnable? Is so, how long after closing it should I wait before reapplying for their card to obtain the points?
    Have a great new Year!

  25. Darius, I just tried your Club Carlson Premier link, and it is no longer working. It redirects to a new application page, but it does not specify a bonus offer.

  26. Darius-

I was approved for the Citi Hilton Reserve Card in August and completed the initial spend requirement pretty quickly and got my 2 free weekend nights via email. Then, I made it past the $10,000 spend requirement. Will I be eligible for the free night for that threshold as well and, if so, how is it awarded…..via email or directly into Hhonors account? As for the $40k spend for diamond status…did that meter reset on jan 1st?

  27. Hi Darius,

Do you know if CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® World Card 50K bonus miles is still valid? I don’t see that anywhere in the application. Please let me know.
    Thanks
    ramamosn

    • @Henry C – You will get 1 free weekend night for crossing $10,000 in spending on the card. But you will get it AFTER your 1st anniversary of having the card. The counter for spending $40K for Hilton Diamond resets after your December statement closes (terms say from your January to December statement).

@ ramamosn – With Citi, you usually get the buns if the application page loads.

  28. Hi Darius
I got a BA companion Voucher. Do I have to use avios or can I use cash to pay for the first ticket and get the free companion ticket. I do understand that I have to pay taxes for the companion as well.
    Thanks.

  29. Darius,

I sent your CITI AAdvantage Personal World MC link to a friend, who was approved and completed the minimum spend. Later she said only 30K deposited, despite confirming the 50K on the landing page. She has a screenshot. The CITI rep said she must physically send in a copy of the screen shot as well as written ‘proof’ of her claim. Huh?

    MY QUESTIONS:

    1) Do you know an easier way to reclaim her missing miles other than ‘hang up, call back’?
    2) Is there a direct CITI phone number for mile deposit issues?

*Sounds like a very useful blog post:)

  31. I applied for both the SoutWest cards – one business and one personal. The personal was approved instantly (18K credit) and the business was not. I called the reconsideration line today and I was told that I had too many hard pulls on my credit report (Got two other cards last month). I asked to be reconsidered and they asked me a series of question about my business and then I was approved for 10K.

    • @sid – You have to use Avios for the 1st award and you will taxes and fees on BOTH tickets.

@Trevor – You could call again, but sometimes banks don’t honor the terms of their deals. You could write a letter to their executive offices.

@Larry Wells – Congrats and thanks for sharing!

  34. what credit cards/ credit companies have prorated annual fees for their credit card. after paying the annual fee, If i cancel my credit card before the years up, which companies will give me a partial refund?

  35. Dear Darius,
Your posts have rocked my world!! Have already signed up for emails and they are the best!
My husband does not yet understand why I have spent the las 2 days glued to my laptop, reading 🙂
Husband and I started a business last year (were not profitable yet, per tax returns). Combined income will be around 100k this year. My CK score is almost 750, his FICO is 690 though he has only lived in the states for 3 years. I have a Chase Freedom and He has a Chase Slate… aside from other cards (cap one, store cards, citi, etc) Was thinking about applying for these cards (one for each of us) at once:
    *2 – Chase Sapphire Preferred
*2 – US Air Card (you recently posted 35k bonus after 1st purchase)
*2 – Citi AA Business Mastercard (50k after $3k spent, FlyerTalk link)
    then, a few days/weeks after:
*2 – Citi AA Platinum Personal Mastercard (550k after $3k spent, FlyerTalk link)

I would also like either the Chase Hyatt (can I apply for 2 Chase at the same time?) or the HHonors Amex as I would like a hotel awards card. Problem is, neither of us has never had an Amex. I’ve gotten offers in the mail for different Amexes. Can’t think of which ones right now (blue and green maybe?)

Sorry for the long post, but do you think this is a good plan? Should I apply for all the same day? Should I even try with Amex? Or do you recommend a different one for hotel rewards all together? (feel like i wouldn’t get approved for SPG)

Thanks so for all the info here! Anyone who can respond is also welcomed to…

    • @ricky – I know American Express does pro-rate fees, but Chase does not.

@Mariele – You can usually get 1 Chase business and 1 Chase personal card at the same time. That said, your husband may not get approved immediately if he has only a 3 month credit history in the US. If he gets denied for the 1st card he applies for, I’d wait before applying for additional cards. I like the AMEX SPG card for their hotel rewards. The Club Carlson card is also a good pick.

  38. Darius,

Thank you for the awesome reading material! I wanted to ask you if you know whether I would be eligible for the Citi AAdvantage MC if I already have the Citi AAdvantage AMEX and Citi AAdvantage VISA (that I picked up a little more than 2 years ago from the 2-browser trick)?

  39. Daraius,

I wanted to say Thank You for helping my husband and I take a much needed vacation last year to Hawaii. Between the two of us we opened Chase Freedom, Chase Sapphire, Chase United, Chase Hyatt and American Express Gold Cards. We used the points to pay for almost all of our trip. We could never have afforded this trip without the information given on this site.

Now that the trip is over and our American Express Gold cards are coming up for renewal, I’m wondering what you recommend. I would like to carry an American Express card for Costco purchases, but don’t want to pay the $175 yearly fee. Would you recommend that I apply for an American Express card without a yearly fee so that I can earn some points at Costco? I think I would prefer to apply for the SPG card. The only problem is that when I try to apply, I get a message on the application that states that I am not eligible for the full sign up points because I already have an American Express Card. With Chase it didn’t matter if I had another card, I was still able to get the sign on bonus. Is American Express different? Any information you can give me would be appreciated!

    • @Cynthia – You could close the Gold card and then apply for the SPG card since you will no longer have an American Express card then. American Express has recently introduced this language in their new car applications, so it is likely that you won’t get the full sign-up bonus if you see that message. I’d also consider the Barclays Arrival card which will get you ~$400 towards any travel expense.

  40. Daraius, thank you for the excellent blog and post! I am new to points and miles. I am planning a trip to Asia (mainly Japan and Korea) very soon.
So far I have these cards and the points:
    1. 2 Chase SouthWest Airlines cards (both personal – premier and plus) – 106,000 miles and CP status. Applied in November 2013.
    2. Barclay USAirways World Premier Mastercards – 35,000 miles after first purchase. Applied in January 2014.

Can these miles and points that I currently have be transferred into any airlines that fly to Asia? (Delta, United, SQ, Cathay, ANA, JAL, China Airlines, Asiana, etc.)
What are next cards that I should apply (which have a best deal in sign up bonus currently) to make my dream trip to Asia come true? I am totally clueless…….should I apply for the Ink Plus first since it’s business card and then apply for Sapphire Preferred? But Chase United also has promotion of sign up bonus too if I am not mistaken….Also Chase British Airways still have the 40,000 points sign up bonus ….. Arghhhh so many cards from Chase but I cannot apply all at once since it will impact my credit score….when doing app-o-rama, how long is the time difference between applying each cards, to be safe? Please help and Thanks a lot in advance!

    • @David – Thanks for reading! You can’t transfer Southwest points to other airlines and they are best used for travel within the US. For the Asia trip, you could get 1 Citi American Airlines personal card and after ~8 days the business card. Each card has 50K miles as the sign-up bonus and you can use those miles to fly to Asia. Or you can get the Chase Ink Plus/Bold and then transfer the points to United. United and American Airlines both allow 1-way awards, so you can book 1 way awards using United or American Airlines miles.

  41. Daraius, thanks a lot for being responsive blogger and your response! You are awesome! Because of you now I have hope to fulfill my dream trip to Asia…so if I am getting this right: I apply 1 City American Airlines personal card and then after 8 days I apply the business version so I will be getting 100k miles total sign up bonus, isn’t it?….and can I also apply Chase Ink Plus/Bold at the same time when I am applying for Citi AA cards?

Also when doing app-o-rama like this, how long is the time difference between applying each cards, to be safe? Since I read your blog that bank doesn’t like to see too many credit inquiries in my credit history , if different bank are pulling credit inquiry from same credit bureau! Does Chase and Citi are pulling from same source/credit bureau?
Have a wonderful day and Thanks a lot again!

  42. I ahve a question on SW rewards card. I applied from your link and got the personal and business premiere business card. to reach the companion pass limit can i also apply for a SW plus personal card? it has been 2 months since the first apps andi jsut got the 105K points into my account.

  43. Are they still giving 50K away with american? The website shows 30 but the link shows 50K.

  44. Daraius, I got approved Southwest premiere personal but the business card was rejected. I called chase center and was told I’ve got couple of business cards already. Can I apply for the other Southwest personal card 3 months later so I am able to get the companion pass? Does Chase allow to hold two Southwest personal cards at the same time? Thanks.

    • @David – You can usually get 1 card from each bank, so you can get the Citi cards and the Chase Ink (business) or Sapphire Preferred or United cards at the same time. Different banks use different credit bureaus and it depends on where you live. But usually, you can get 1 card from each bank or 1 business and 1 personal card at a time. Just be sure that you can meet the minimum spending requirements before applying for the cards.

@vsin – It is easier to just buy hotel points and transfer to your Southwest account to get the Companion Pass.

@david – The link still works according to readers, but your experience could be different.

@milesrookie – Some readers report being able to get 2 different Southwest cards and some aren’t able to. So it really varies.

  45. I’ve had a Marriott card for 7 years now with about 130K points and an $85 annual fee. I’m thinking I could benefit more with a different hotel card, but know that cancelling an older card isn’t advisable. Any advice? Should I see if they have a no annual fee Marriott card and apply for a different hotel card? I have a Million Miler AA card and an SWA card, so a beneficial hotel card would be nice. Your thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks!

  46. Hi,
Do you know of any way to trade airline miles for Starwood points? I know of the reverse with the card, but am trying to garner about 35000 more for a honeymoon in Rome with a free night at the St Regis.

    • @Tammy – If this is your oldest card, I wouldn’t close it. For hotel credit cards, you could consider the American Express SPG card, the Club Carlson card, IHG Card, Hyatt card, but it really depends on your travel goals. I’d go to each hotel website and make dummy award reservations and see if there are hotels in the areas which you want to visit. I’d also compare the hotel availability and number of points required for stays.

  47. Hi Darius, Thanks to you I am turning 40 in Hawaii. 12 days in paradise for my family of 4, flying first class, all on points! My questions is, I remember a while back while using the 2 browser trick while applying for the Citi® Platinum Select® AAdvantage® World MasterCard®and Am Ex, there were some lounge passes also offered. Am I correct? If so, how do I access and use those? Thank you!

  48. I would like to get approved for the Citi American Airlines Business. Credit score it great/excellent and I do have a business but I haven’t any relationship with Citi bank yet. Would it be wiser to look for a personal account first or am I okay with shooting for the business as a new customer?

  49. Also considering the Amex Platinum in my next churn but your link on this page isn’t working 🙁

    • @Kristen – Thanks! You should have received the lounge passes in the mail if you applied for the offer with the lounge passes. You just go to the American Airlines lounge and show those passes and will be able to get in.

@Jacki – It should be fine applying for the Citi American Airlines business card first. Thanks for using our links! I’ve updated the link to the Platinum card, though the Mercedes Benz link is the better one with a higher sign-up bonus.

  52. Dear Darius, You are the MAN!!! Thanks to you, since I first started reading your blog in July of 2012, between my wife and I we have amassed almost 2 millions miles/points between various programs, and interestingly seen my credit score actually go up during that span. My question for you is the SW companion pass. My wife and I each opened up personal Premier and business cards about a year and a half ago, spent enough to each get companion passes so that our kids travel for free!!! The passes expire end of this year. I have since cancelled my SW cards once the annual renewal fee was due for all four cards. I love the companion pass having used it along with points to take the family to Vegas, Orlando, Salt Lake City and Colorado. Do you think there would be any problems with my wife and I doing the same exact thing this coming December/January but with the other set of personal and business cards so that we can get the companion pass again for most of 2015 and all of 2016? Thanks again!

    • @Robert – Thanks for reading and for sharing your success. Those are my favorite kinds of comments. Applying for the other set of cards could work, but December is still 11 months away, so things could change!

  53. Hello Darius—is the Air Tran credit card still honoring 32 A+ Credits? Thanks a million again.

  54. Awesome blog and great report!!

BTW, on money aspect, basically points and miles help to cover mostly of your travel expenses, aren’t they? 🙂

As for me, I am curious about time aspect. Since I only limited leave balance in a year, and I would love to take more vacation to travel more but sometimes work limits me to do so….

I need your help, I am still fresh and newbie here. I have planned my trip to Korea and Japan on April 6 to May 4. Honestly, I just applied these cards because of the great signup bonus offer that they had at that time and since everybody was raving on it, then I decided to jumped into the water too, thinking that maybe the large signup bonus miles will come in handy someday in the future. I was late in this game, I planned to go to travel to Asia on this April and since I haven’t meet the spending requirement and it will take times for the points to post, and I am afraid that the seats will sold out if I wait to book in less than a month before the departure, so I had no option so I just paid by cash this time (will fly with Singapore Airlines, from SFO – Incheon, Korea on April 6 and Return Flight from Narita, Japan – Los Angeles on May 4…. got a sweet deal fare of $978 which is non-refundable, unfortunately).

That’s why I regretted about this and plan to save the points that I have accumulated so far (as I described above) for my next trip next year.

I need to book one way flight ticket just for myself from Seoul Incheon Airport to Fukuoka, Japan on April 14 (mostly Korean Air or Asiana has this flight), also connecting flight from LA to SFO on May 4, evening time. I haven’t book them yet, still looking around and confused….

I currently have (all were approved via your links) :

    – 1 Barclay USAirways card, approved on Jan 3, 2014: accumulated 35,000 miles sign up bonus (no idea how can I use this and put it in a good deal).

    – 2 Chase SW Airlines cards, approved on Oct and Nov 2013 (both personal, plus and premier), accumulated 110,000 miles in total and companion pass status (plan to use this for short trip domestically within US with my mom or sister, as I am still single).

    – 1 Citi American Airlines AAdvantage Executive card, approved on Jan 29 2014(currently still working on meet the minimum spending so can get 100,000 miles sign up bonus and $200 statement credit), so by the time I meet the minimum spending I will accumulated total of 110,000 miles (I plan to save this for my next trip to Asia or Europe next year).

Now, as I am desperately trying to save money and try to use the miles to pay for my one way flight from Incheon-Fukuoka on April 14 and from LA-SFO on May 4, I noticed that the airlines companies that I have miles with don’t really have good deal of award seat/pay with mile (or maybe I search in the wrong way). I basically go to the airlines website directly (American Airlines, US Airways, Southwest) and try to make a “dummy booking” with pay with miles option to see how many miles should I spend, but after seeing the results, I doubt I am doing it right way. As for normal search pay with cash that I did on deal site like expedia or priceline, cheapest airfare for that date is by Virgin or Delta, and sadly I don’t have any miles with them. And both charge extra fee for checked in baggage. I also ever read somewhere that booking with different website (not the website of the airline that I would be flying with) will result in giving better deal in award/mileage redemption….but I just have no idea which website. I also haven’t have any other credit cards with other banks besides Chase, Barclay, Discover and Citi.

Please help, what should I do to get a great deal on pay with miles option to pay for my one way flight for myself from Incheon-Fukuoka on April 14 and LAX-SFO on May 4?

Appreciate any advice and guidance as I am in total lost in here.

  55. Hi Darius!
I have a question about AmEx cards. I’ve read in some places that certain sign-up bonuses are only awarded to first-time AmEx customers, not first-time to that particular card. Is this accurate? I read in a comment above that a woman wasn’t able to receive the full SPG AmEx signup bonus, because she already had an AmEx Gold card.

    Thanks!
    – Stephanie

  56. Hi Darius,

New reader. I just signed up for a frontier airlines card but need about 10K more points for a trip I’m trying to make. Do you have any suggestions on other cards to sign up for that can translate into Frontier airlines EarlyReturns points ?

    –Andy

  57. Hi,
I have to redeem my 84000 amex business card points. I can transfer them into several airlines. Do you know if any airline is offering an extra bonus? Also, if I transfer to Delta there is a charge, while other airlines don’t. Thanks for the information

    • @Jason – For LAX to SFO, I’d use your Southwest points because all flights are available on points and there are no checked bag fees. Or 12,500 American Airline miles when you go to the American Airlines website. You have the Citi Executive card so you shouldn’t have to pay for a checked bag on American Airlines. For Incheon to Fukuoka, I’d try searching for Japan Air flights and use American Airlines miles to book them. Go to the British Airways website and search for the flights using British Airways Avios points. Then write down the flight information and call American Airlines to book those flights.

@ Stephanie – AMEX has added those terms in some of their applications, so be careful to double check the application page to the sign-on bonus.

@Andy – Unfortunately, you can’t transfer points from any other card to the Frontier card.

@ dali – There is a slight charge (excise fee) for transferring to US airlines.

  59. Thanks for all the good tips, I have been using them to try to get the most out of my good credit! :-p

I have a quick question about the Chase Ink cards. How soon can you apply for one after the other? I need about 200k United Miles for the flights I want to take and have the Sapphire and the United card bonuses to apply towards it already. I have quite a few Chase cards already (around a 7 year history) and have a checking account that I recently opened with them. I have a high score 780+, but am a bit leery because I have only had the Sapphire and United cards about a month.

    Any advice is appreciated.

  60. Darius,

The link for the Citi American Airlines Business AAdvantage VISA brings up an application for Citi American Airlines Business AAdvantage Master Card, and does not indicate that there is a bonus offer for 50,000 pts. A call to Citi Cards indicates that the current offer is for 35,000 with $1500/3mos. Do you have a different link for the offer on the website?

  61. Hi Darius,
Excellent website! You have got me hooked.
I wanted to let my fellow readers know that I applied for IHG rewards club card from chase and was approved for 60K bonus points. Then, I sent them a secure msg after i got the card and they agreed to match me to the 80K promotion!

BTW, I am finding EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, next to impossible, to buy vanilla reloads with credit card – I have tried gas stations and Walgreens. None of the CVS stores have them. My next thought is to open a AMEXserve account in my wife’s name and try to see if I can can use greendot Money Pack to load that account, (if they let me buy it with a CC)

I also applied and got approved for 40K bonus Sapphire preferred. Is there any promotion for higher points going on that I can ask Chase to be matched to?

Thanks for all your work again!

Aditya Jain .(P.S – I would love to read a post about your India trip … the one where you posted photo of u and your family flying in business/first class on AA)

    • @Adam – I’d wait at least 3 months before applying for the business cards.

@nancy – The link still works for 50K miles based on reader feedback.

@ Aditya – You could open a Serve account and load it at CVS with gift cards. Here’s a link to that trip report.

@best_daddy – That’s very unexpected. I haven’t heard of it from other readers, though I know of targeted offers with the lower spending requirement.

      @Kevin – I don’t know of an end date.

  62. I’ve used your link to apply many times the Chase Ink card. Every time, as we know, I need to spend $5000 in 3 months to get the 50000 points.

This time, however, on a Ink Bold, I got the 50000 points by only spending $1000+ or so in the 1st statement cycle. I am pleasantly surprised, of course, but want to hear if anybody else had reported such pleasant surprise. I don’t plan (as with any card’s application) to spend on the card further, once my sign up bonus is received. And I’d like to make sure the points don’t get taken back one day.

  63. Do you know when the Citi Executive Card offer of 100K miles for $10k in spending with $200 statement credit is going to expire? Did an app-o-rama in January and want to wait 90 days an apply in January.

  65. Darius, thanks to your blog. I got both the SW cards and as per your tip waited to do my spending at the start of the calendar year and now I have the CP till the end of 2015. I am so excited for all the trips I can make. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

  66. Hi Darius,

Just and FYI: it looks like the Chase Ink card you mention above appears to earn only 1 Point per $1 on hotels & gas stations per my first statement.

    Tom

    • @veena – Congrats and thanks so much for sharing! These are my favorite kind of comments. It doesn’t hurt to book trips from now with points to lock-in the better rates because it will cost more points to book the same flights from March 31, 2014.

@Tom – Which Ink card do you have? You should earn 2 points per $1 for gas and hotels. It helps to send a secure message and they may post your points sooner (instead of waiting until the next statement).

  67. Hi Darius,

I’m using the Business Chase Ink card…

  75. Hello Darius,
thanks for all the wonderful tips you provide. I last signed up with the two trick browser for the aa citi cards mastercard/amex back on 6/29/12. i know a lot has changed in that time…but if i waited until 7/1/14 just over two years since i last applied, and just only went for the citi aa mastercard that i would qualify and enough time would have passed? thanks for any insight! 🙂

  77. This info is awesome and I wish I would have found it earlier today. This afternoon I got the Delta Skymiles Gold for Business card which offers 30K points only to find out that I need just over 60K points to book a flight to Hawaii in late April. Can you help coach me on what I could do to accomplish this? You seem to know a ton about this stuff and reply quickly and my wife and I haven’t taken a vacation since our honeymoon 8 years ago…thanks in advance!

I would be willing to get more Delta cards or start over with another airline if easiest.

  78. Thanks for those tips. After looking over my options I’d really like to try and fly Delta so I can be with the rest of my family on the flight. I also like the free checked bags and $50 credit if I buy food on the flight.

My only question now is how long I should wait to apply for the personal card now that I have the business card, and how do I get both offers to apply to my skymiles account for the total 60K miles?

  79. Hello Darius,
Thank you for all of your great suggestions and updates. Quick question….
It looks like the SW Business card (50K bonus) offer is gone. 🙁 Can a person apply for 2 SW personal cards (at the same time) to get both 50K bonuses and then get the companion pass?

  80. Hi Darius,

Just to help anyone who hasn’t gotten the Southwest Premier cards…. the Plus cards are done. Even though there are some links to them, the Apply Links are down. However, the Premier cards are still available. I applied and got one tonight. If you can’t find them, go straight to the source – southwest.com

    Best of luck

  96. With the Citi AAdvantage cards now only being churnable every 18 months, I have a question: I have the citi aadvantage amex and the citi aadvantage visa. I lowered them down to no fee cards to avoid the annual fee. But what I’m wondering is if I apply again in 18 months for the card, will they say I can’t because “I already have the card.” (even if it’s the downgraded no fee card?). If so, then I’d much rather cancel them both so I can get a possible bonus in 18 months. But if I don’t have to cancel then I won’t.

Additionally, when canceling, is it generally ok to say you were canceling because you had already gotten the signup bonus, or is that being way too honest for no benefit? My response before was just that I was traveling less so the card wasn’t as useful to me (not exactly true!). Just wondering if there’s an advantage to doing one or the other.

  97. YEARS AGO I USED TO USE MY MILES TOWARD A PARTNERS MILEAGE SPECIALS. FOR EXAMPLE ANA AIR HAD A BUSINESS CLASS SPECIAL AND THEY WERE PARTNERS WITH DELTA. I USED MY DELTA MILES FOR THE ANA SPECIAL.. ARE THOSE DEALS STILL AROUND ?

    • @Taylor – You could cancel one card. I usually have one open to get 10% of the miles which I’ve redeemed back.

@GABE ROSKO – ANA and Delta are no longer partners, but you can book flights on partner airlines with certain airlines.
