I like using Hotel Hustle to find hotels for award stays because it shows you how many points you’ll need for your specific travel dates.  And show you if award nights are available at hotels, including Marriott!

Another option is AwardMapper.  It shows similar information.  But it’s not specific to travel dates and won’t search for available award rooms.

I haven’t personally stayed at these hotels, but they look wonderful!  Let me know if you’ve stayed at any of them!

Note:  The prices in these examples are based on travel in June 2016.

Note:   Some Marriott hotels (especially resorts) add pricey resort fees to paid and award nights.  Before you book, check the hotel policy to decide if it’s worth it for you.  And here are my tips on how to avoid them!

Note:   There are rumors that starting April 2016, Chase will make it tougher to be approved for ANY of their cards (including airline & hotel cards) if you’ve opened ~5+ credit card accounts with any bank within the past 24 months.

So I recommend folks 1st sign-up for the Chase Sapphire PreferredHere’s why.  But if you already have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or don’t want it, consider this offer for the Chase Marriott Premier.  Or the other Chase cards in Hot Deals.

  1. do you need to have a SSN for the authorized user?

  2. Disclaimer–Marriott in Venice is a resort very far from the action and very isolated (and somewhat depressing). It’s a 30 min boat ride to St. Mark’s Square. Much better to stay in the heart of Venice for a short trip there, especially if you’ve got SPG points to use for Gritti Palace. Venice is a great city. Staying at Marriott Venice is similar to going to NYC, but staying on Long Island.

  3. @jan – Chase doesn’t ask for a SSN to add an authorized user:
    http://millionmilesecrets.com/2016/01/17/why-do-some-banks-ask-for-an-authorized-users-social-security-number/

@Steve – Thanks for adding that insight! I’m sure some folks would rather be in the middle of the action.

  4. marriott site does not allow guest breakdown i.e. 2 adults, 2 children
How do you specify that? Are points applicable to 2 guests only or a family of 4?

  5. @shah – Each hotel has different rules. But if you click on “Room Details” when you get to the final booking page, you should see how many people are allowed in the room. And what the hotel’s policy is about room occupancy. Hope that helps!

  6. Virginia Paola

Lucky that I redid my IHG reservations for an upcoming trip to Florida YESTERDAY! I found it interesting that in addition to raising points required on many of the hotels they also lowered the points required on a number of hotels. Incidentally I enjoyed participating in the recent “send in” promotion that earned us a good number of points. Biggest one was only 2000 but it still was fun and worth my time (I am retired) to submit entries. I do gift my adult grandchildren hotel stays when I can and its nice to have sufficient points to do so.

  7. @Virginia Paola – Wonderful! A number of IHG points did decrease in price. And I’m glad to hear you earned lots of points with the Priceless Surprises promotion. Your grandchildren will be, too. 🙂

  8. Question on Marriott.

Got this in my Cardmember Experience: Exclusive Offers e-mail:

“Book 7 nights at a category 7, 8 or 9 hotel by May 1, 2016 and receive 15,000 bonus points after your stay. For bookings after May 1, 2016, this card benefit is discontinued. :

Was there such benefit? If yes, is May 1, 2016 deadline for bookings or for stays? Could not find any info anywhere.

  9. Thank you very much for this post. I am going to Barcelona this August and will definitely stay at the hotel you recommended.

  10. Update: I applied Chase Marriott business card online and my application didn’t get approve right away. I had to call in and giving out a lot of detail information about my business revenue/gross…etc. In the end, the rep told me to wait for 1-2 weeks for final review. I asked why? I don’t have any business card with chase yet. The rep said I already have personal credit card with Chase and they need to take that into consideration. (yes I have like 3 cc with Chase currently) OMG…I thought business and personal don’t count together… I hope I still can get this Marriott Business credit. Cross my fingers!!!!

  11. @Lili – I’ve never heard of that before! How long have you had your Chase Marriott card?

@OC_JW – Hoping for the best for you!

I believe for new business card applications, Chase bases their initial approval off your personal credit history. And for future cards, they’ll consider your business credit profile. So that could be why the Chase representative asked you so many questions.

A review is better than a denial though! Hang in there!

Enjoy your time in Barcelona. That hotel looks like a fantastic place to stay! 🙂
