This is a 20,000 mile increase from the usual sign-up bonus you get with these cards. Plus, you’ll earn a $50 statement credit after your 1st Delta purchase within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
Emily and I don’t earn a commission on these cards, but we’ll always tell you about the best deals!
I’ll tell you what you need to know about the AMEX Delta Gold cards and show you what you can do with 50,000 Delta miles.
What’s the Deal?
You’ll earn 50,000 Delta miles when you sign-up for the AMEX Delta Gold personal or small business card and spend $2,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account. And you’ll earn a $50 statement after making your 1st Delta purchase within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.
Other benefits you get with these cards include:
- 1st checked bag free for yourself and up to 8 traveling companions on the same reservation
- 2 miles per $1 you spend on Delta
- 1 mile per $1 you spend on everything else
- 20% discount on certain Delta in-flight purchases
- Priority boarding
- Discount on Delta SkyClub lounge passes
- Pay With Miles
- No foreign transaction fees
- Terms and Restrictions Apply
The $95 annual fee is waived for the 1st year on both cards.
I recommend folks evaluate a card for ~10 months to decide if it’s worth the annual fee. If you decide the card isn’t worth the annual fee in the 2nd year, it’s easy to close the account.
There’s no hard-sell. And they may even offer to waive the annual fee for another year or give you other perks to keep the card. Check out this page on Flyertalk to see what other folks have been offered to hang onto their American Express cards.
If you were recently approved for the 30,000 Delta miles sign-up bonus, it doesn’t hurt to call American Express to see if they’ll match the current offer.
You can only earn the sign-up bonus on AMEX personal cards once per lifetime. So if you’ve already had the AMEX Delta Gold personal card, you won’t earn the bonus again. And you can usually only sign-up for 1 AMEX personal card per day.
Many folks don’t think they qualify for a small business card, but you might be surprised to know it’s not as difficult as you may think. Activities like selling items on eBay, coaching, and freelance design can get you approved. Even start-ups qualify for small business cards.
And you do NOT need an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to complete the application. If you apply as a sole proprietorship, you can use your social security number.
Where Can 50,000 Delta Miles Take You?
Delta no longer publishes their award chart. However, you should be able to find award flights for the same prices as listed on the old award chart.
With 50,000 Delta miles you could get 2 round-trip coach tickets to anywhere in the continental US, Alaska, or Canada.
Or get 1 round-trip coach flight to Hawaii.
If you need more Delta miles you can transfer Starwood points you earn with the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express cards.
And you can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Delta. Just keep in mind that you’ll pay an excise fee.
AMEX Cards Save You Money on Everyday Spending Too!
Along with travel, American Express cards can save you lots of money if you like to shop:
- AMEX Offers – Having another AMEX card gives you more opportunity to be targeted for these discounts. And you can get the same offer on multiple cards!
- ShopRunner – Get complimentary membership in ShopRunner by having an AMEX card. You’ll get free shipping from dozens of online merchants.
- AMEX OPEN – (business card only) – Earn automatic discounts when you use your AMEX business card at participating merchants, like FedEx and Hertz.
Should You Sign-Up?
If you frequently fly Delta, this could be a good card for you. That’s because this card comes with perks that can save you money on flights like the 1st checked bag free for you and up to 8 travel companions. And a 20% discount on in-flight purchases.
However, it can be tricky to find Delta award flights that work for you, unless you can be flexible with your travel dates. And there are lots of other great airline cards out there that earn miles that are easier to use.
If you apply for this card and aren’t approved instantly, give American Express a call. Sometimes all they need is a bit more information to finish processing your application.
And once you’re approved, the 50,000 Delta miles will typically post to your account once you’ve complete the minimum spending and within 24 to 48 hours after your statement closes.
This is better than the previous offer of 30,000 Delta miles. We don’t earn a commission on this card, but we’ll always tell you about the best deals!
This card could be a good option for folks who frequently fly Delta because you can save money on checked bags and in-flight purchases.
But, as always, do what works best for you!
