Million Mile Secrets Southwest Business Card Review

  • Increased 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months
  • 60,000 Southwest points are worth ~$900 in Southwest airfare – enough for multiple flights
  • Sign-up bonus counts towards the 110,000 Southwest points needed in a calendar year for the Companion Pass

We’re big fans of Southwest here at Million Mile Secrets!  With 2 free checked bags, no change or cancellation fees, friendly customer service, and an increasing list of destinations in the US and abroad, there is a lot to like about Southwest.

And right now, there’s an increased 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus for the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card.  This bonus will get you over halfway to the 110,000 points needed in a calendar year to qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass, which is my #1 favorite deal in travel!

This is a small business card, but you don’t need a multi-million dollar corporation to qualify!

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card comes with a 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months.

That’s the highest offer we have seen for this card!  And it’s 20,000 points more than the current offers on 2 personal Southwest cards, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card.  Plus, the card comes with:

  • 2X points on Southwest purchases and Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partner purchases
  • 1X points on all other purchases
  • 6,000 bonus points each account anniversary year
  • Free employee cards
  • No foreign transaction fees

The card has a $99 annual fee, which is NOT waived the first year.

What Can You Do With 60,000 Southwest Points?

The actual cost for an award ticket on Southwest will depend on your destination, how far in advance you book, time of day, and other factors, but you should be able to redeem 60,000 Southwest points for multiple flights.

Southwest points are, on average, worth ~1.5 cents per point, so the 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus is worth ~$900 towards travel!  And if you have the Southwest Companion pass, the sign-up bonus could be worth double that!

And if you are flexible with your travel plans, you can find some incredible value.  For example, Southwest frequently has sales with fares starting as low as $49 one-way.  In that case, you would have to spend just 2,524 Southwest points plus ~$6 in taxes for the flight.  That’s a great deal!

But That Same Flight Would Cost Just 2,524 Southwest Points!

With the 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus, you could take 23 Southwest flights from this deal (60,000 points / 2,524 points per flight).  That’s an incredible value from one credit card sign-up bonus!

And even if your travel plans don’t align with a fare sale, you can still find good deals.  In January, Million Mile Secrets contributor Chris booked a round-trip ticket from Baltimore to Denver for just over 25,000 points plus ~$11 in taxes and fees.  That’s not bad for the middle of ski season!

The Sign-Up Bonus Counts Toward the Companion Pass!

The Southwest Companion Pass is my #1 favorite deal in travel!  That’s because folks with the Companion Pass can bring a friend or family member along on paid and award tickets – for just the cost of taxes and fees!

To qualify for the Companion Pass, you’ll need to earn 110,000 qualifying Southwest points in a calendar year.  And points earned from the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card 60,000 point sign-up bonus count!

After earning 110,000 Southwest points, the Companion Pass is valid for the remainder of the calendar year and the entire following year.  That means if you earn the Companion Pass now, it will be valid through December 31, 2019.

Folks With the Southwest Companion Pass Can Save Lots of Money on Flights and Enjoy Trips to Terrific Destinations!

The increased 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus on the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card is particularly good news now that Chase will only allow you to have 1 Southwest personal credit card.

One of the easiest ways to earn the Companion Pass is by opening 2 of the 3 available Chase Southwest co-branded credit cards.  The bonuses often fluctuate between 40,000 and 60,000 points each.  So by opening a couple of cards and meeting the minimum spending requirements, you could have enough points to immediately qualify!

But now, you can only have 1 Southwest personal credit card.  So to use this strategy, you have to open 1 Southwest personal credit card (either the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card or the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card) and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card.

How Much Are 60,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards Points Worth If You Have the Companion Pass?

Using points with the Companion Pass effectively doubles the value of the points.  That because you can use Southwest points to pay for your ticket but your companion’s ticket is almost free (you’ll just pay taxes and fees).

So on the flight deal I found earlier, a one-way ticket for both you and your companion would cost a total of 2,524 points plus ~$11 in fees.

And even if your travel plans don’t line up with a Southwest fare sale, the price of an award flight is tied to the cost of a paid ticket, so when fares go down, award prices do too.  So if you find a deal you could squeeze several round-trips out of the bonus.

If You Have the Companion Pass, You Only Have to Pay the Taxes and Fees for Your Companion’s Ticket!

For example, I found round-trip flights between Chicago and Fort Lauderdale for ~22,000 points plus ~$11 in taxes and fees. With the 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus, you and your companion could take this trip and have enough points left for 1 or 2 round-trips, depending on the price.

Southwest Premier Business Card Benefits

In addition to the 60,000 point sign-up bonus and the 6,000 point yearly anniversary bonus, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card comes with other perks like:

  • Extended Warranty Protection – Extends the time period of the US manufacturer’s warranty by an additional year, on eligible warranties of 3 years or less
  • Baggage Delay Insurance – Reimburses you for essential purchases like toiletries and clothing for baggage delays over 6 hours up to $100 a day for 3 days
  • Purchase Protection – Covers your new purchases for 120 days against damage or theft up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account

Is The Southwest Premier Business Card Right for You?

For folks looking to stock up on Southwest points, this card is a great deal.  You can redeem the 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus multiple round-trip flights, and even more if you have the Companion Pass.

If you are interested in earning the Companion Pass, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card is a terrific way to boost your points balance, because both the sign-up bonus and the points earned from spending count towards 110,000 point Companion Pass requirement.

And though this is a business credit card, it’s easier than you think to qualifyActivities like providing paid child care, blogging, or tutoring can all qualify as businesses, so long as you’re aiming to earn a profit.

Keep in mind, you don’t have to have an Employee Identification Number (EIN) to apply for the card, either.  As a sole proprietor, you can just use your name and social security number in the application.

The card comes with an annual fee of $99 which is NOT waived the first year, so folks looking for a no-annual-fee card should consider other options.  Small business owners who want a cash back card should also consider other cards first, like the Chase Ink Business Cash card, which is also offering an all-time-high sign-up bonus!

Remember Chase’s Card Application Rules

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card falls under Chase’s stricter approval rules.  So if you’ve opened 5+ credit cards within the past 24 months from ANY bank (except Chase business cards and certain other small business cards), it’s likely you will NOT be approved for the card.

If that’s the case, you could instead consider small business cards like The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN.

Similarly, you cannot open a new Southwest Premier Business Card if you currently have the card or have earned the sign-up bonus for the card in the past 24 months.

Check Your Credit Report to Make Sure You Are Under the Chase “5/24” Rule

If you are looking for a card that earns a lot of points from regular spending, there are better options available.  The Southwest Premier Business Credit Card earns 2X points on Southwest flights and just 1X points on all other purchases.

For more points on day-to-day purchases, you could consider another card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which earns 3X points on dining and travel, including purchases with Southwest.  You can then transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Southwest book award flights!

Bottom Line:  Southwest Business Credit Card Review

With the increased sign-up bonus on the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card, you’ll earn 60,000 Southwest points after meeting minimum spending requirements.  This is the highest offer we’ve seen on the card!

This is a small business card, but you don’t have to be a big corporation to qualify

The 60,000 Southwest point sign-up bonus:

  • Is enough for ~$900 in airfare on Southwest (effectively double if you have the Companion Pass)
