As American Airlines continues its march toward dynamic pricing we are seeing an increase in the number of incredible award deals. And right now there are domestic awards starting at 5,000 miles one-way for what looks to be just about every destination American Airlines serves (depending on the dates), including transcontinental routes.

These web specials come and go without warning, so if you see a route you like you should grab it while you can. Just know that Economy Web Special awards can’t be changed, even if you have American Airlines status.

American Airlines Economy Web Specials

There isn’t an official expiration date on these deals, but we don’t expect these prices to be around for long. Also, many routes are available for 7,500 miles or 10,000 miles, which is still a discount of 2,500-5,000 miles off the standard AA Award chart prices.

Right now there are literally too many routes on sale to even begin listing. There are even deals available from smaller airports, which isn’t common to see. I’m seeing 5,000-mile one-way flights from places like Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Little Rock, Arkansas.

There are also limited transcontinental routes available for flights from Boston or New York to Los Angeles. Deals like these are some of the best uses of American Airlines miles.

Here are a few examples of what you can book:

New York (JFK) to Austin (AUS) for 5,000 miles + $5.60 one-way:

Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK) for 5,000 miles + $5.60 one-way:

Chicago (ORD) to Miami (MIA) for 5,000 miles + $5.60 one-way:

Need more American Airlines miles?

There aren’t many flexible travel rewards credit cards that partner with American Airlines, except for Marriott. So to earn American Airlines miles you’ll need an airline credit card, like the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®.  It currently has a welcome bonus offer of 70,000 American Airlines miles after spending $4,000 in purchases in the first four months. The card’s $99 annual fee is waived for the first 12 months.

Or you could opt for the no annual fee American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card. With this card, you’ll earn 10,000 American Airlines miles and receive a $50 statement credit after making $500 in purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Look forward to see how I can travel with less points.

Do you still need one of the AA credit cards to take advantage of the economy web specials?

Jason Stauffer

No, you can just search for them on American’s website.

I cannot see any web specials on AA.com when I log onto my account and put down Austin to LAX in December as you show in article. Any idea why? I do not have AA credit card and wonder if this is the reason.

Hi Ben!

I just did a search on the aa.com website and was able to find 5k mile Economy web specials for most of December 2019.

From the aa.com home page, I selected the following options for booking a flight: I selected a 1-way flight, checked the box for “redeeming miles”, flying from AUS to LAX, for 1 passenger.

Let me know if you’re able to see the web specials this way, thanks!

Thanks, I see them now. Does AA show any where on their site which cities have economy web specials?

Hi Ben!

I don’t think there’s a dedicated sale page that lists all of the available routes, so unfortunately you’ll have to check pricing for the specific route you’re interested in.
