I’ve written about the unofficial number of American Express cards you can have at one time.  But the official rules have changed!

And because lots of folks are interested in the limited-time 35,000 Starwood point sign-up bonus on the personal and small business AMEX Starwood cards, I wanted to tell you about the new guidelines.

Now, there’s NO official limit to the number of AMEX credit cards or charge cards you can have at once!  But the decision to approve you or not is still ultimately up to the bank.

The Maximum Number of AMEX Cards You Can Have Has Changed for the Better!

I’ll explain the details.  And help you decide if applying for the highest-ever offer on the AMEX Starwood cards makes sense for you.

Maximum Number of American Express Cards You Can Have

Because of the limited-time increased offer on the AMEX Starwood cards, folks who already have a lot of American Express cards might be wondering if they can qualify for more.

The Official Rules Have Changed

In the past, the total number of American Express credit cards you could have open at one time was 4 to 5.  This limit did NOT include American Express charge cards.

But I spoke with multiple American Express representatives who confirmed there is NO limit now.  That said, whether you’re approved or not still depends on your credit score, past credit history, and the amount of credit they’ve already given you.  And the decision is ultimately up to the bank.

The AMEX Representative I Chatted With Said They Have Card Members That Have 5+ AMEX Cards

And I confirmed the same news by chatting online with another representative.

AMEX credit cards include cards the AMEX Starwood card, AMEX Gold Delta card, and AMEX Hilton Surpass card.  Credit cards have a fixed spending limit (credit limit), and you do NOT have to pay your balance in full every month.

Charge cards, in comparison, do NOT have a fixed spending limit.  But you must pay your balance in full every month.  AMEX charge cards include the AMEX Business Platinum and AMEX Premier Rewards Gold.

Here’s a post about the difference between credit cards and charge cards.

Even If You Already Have 5+ AMEX Cards, It’s Still Possible to Be Approved for the Limited-Time Offer on the AMEX Starwood Card. Where You Can Earn Enough Points for a Free Night At the Luxurious Santa Marina, A Luxury Collection Resort in Mykonos, Greece

So if you already have 5+ AMEX cards, but have a good credit history, it’s possible to get approved for the limited-time increased offer on the AMEX Starwood cards.

But don’t forget, American Express only allows folks to get the sign-up bonus ONCE per person, per lifetime on ALL their cards, with this possible exception.

And if you apply for the business version of the AMEX Starwood card, it will NOT appear on your personal credit report.  So it won’t break Chase’s stricter approval rules!

If You Earn the Full Sign-Up Bonus on the AMEX Starwood Card and Transfer Your Points to American Airlines, You’ll Have Enough Miles for 2 Round-Trip Coach Tickets Within the US. Like to the Big Apple!

This is an excellent offer.  And because of the Marriott – Starwood merger, we aren’t sure how long this card will last.  So if you’ve been considering it, now is a great time to apply!

Bottom Line

The unofficial maximum number of American Express credit cards you could have at once used to be 5.  And there was no limit to the number of AMEX charge cards you could have.

But the rules have changed!  An American Express representative confirmed that now, there’s NO limit to the number of credit cards OR charge cards you can have at one time.

That’s great news!  Especially for folks considering the limited-time increased offer on the personal and small business AMEX Starwood cards.

Will this change to American Express’ policy help you?

  1. Thanks MMS for the confirmation! This is great news indeed.
By any chance, did yo ask about time rules such as 1/8 or 2/90? I did apply for couple of card recently and feeling bit left out.

  2. Hi, thanks for your updates. Are we still limited to two new AMex cards within 90 days? Thanks.

  3. Just got declined for too many open accounts with Amex

  4. Question: If I had the personal AMEX in the past, can I get the business one now and be eligible for ots sign-up bonus?

  5. This is interesting- i applied for the SPG business and Personal on March 24th. I was instantly approved for the personal and got a pending for the business. 10 minutes later i got an email saying i was approved for the business card. I then received a letter this saturday the 31st saying i was not approved for the business as “you have reached the maximum number and type of cards that we will approve within the period of a few months.” The number they provided to call is closed on the weekends so i will have to wait to monday to get more info. My previous amex cards were applied for on 1/11, 11/15, and 7/15. I am hoping i can just close my card from 7/15 and get this one…..

  6. Bravo on misleading readers to push your affiliate link because you’re unable to correctly read. Frankly, it’s completely disgusting.

How many Amex cards do I have? 10. How many Amex credit cards do I have? 5.

There’s a maximum limit that is well tested. To prove that there’s no such limit, you’re going to need to do more than (a) get an answer from a chat representative to the wrong question; (b) confirm an answer to the wrong question. (No matter what the question asked was, the question answered has nothing to do with credit cards.)

Did you forget to publish this for April Fools Day?

  7. Utter BS! Just got declined for having too many credit cards (even though I only have 4). 800 FICO

    MMS, you are a tool.

  8. There are many reasons for denials, and it could be that some folks have maxed out the amount of credit AMEX will extend to them.

Other Million Mile Secrets readers and commenters on Reddit have reported opening more than 5 AMEX credit cards.

I’ve also spoken with multiple AMEX representatives, online and over the phone, and each one has confirmed that there’s no hard rule for the number of AMEX credit and charge cards you can have open at once. But again, the decision is still ultimately up to the bank. And depends on your credit score, past credit history, and the amount of credit they’ve already given you.

    • You are completely full of crap.

Here’s what a chat representative told me: http://i.imgur.com/CUd8Aht.png (in reference to the maximum number of credit cards one can have). Note the whole “I may not be the best person to comment on it” – because this is not the type of inquiry a chat rep is supposed to handle. I followed up with new accounts & was told directly “the maximum number of credit cards you can have is 4 or 5, depending on what the system decides”. That took me exactly one call. (Whether someone with extremely high spending can exceed the limit is up for debate, but I would be very surprised to see that as a data point.)

The fact of the matter is that no one reading this post has any hope of exceeding the 5 credit card limit, and you are wrong (both factually and morally) for spreading false information in the pursuit of affiliate money. You should be ashamed, and you should correct or take down this blatant lie post-hate.

  9. I have 7 Amex cards and a fantastic relationship with them. I am fairly positive if I want to open another, they will let me. There’s another reason for those declines.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience, Nina!

    • Nina: do you have 7 credit cards, though? What cards do you have?

    • There’s a difference between CREDIT cards and CHARGE cards with amex and MMS you need to re-iterate this. This post is so misleading on so many levels. I can have 10 amex cards total and yet still have only 5 CREDIT cards. They will deny me if I try for an additonal CREDIT card but I will be approved for a CHARGE card. Reps don’t know these things.

      ELI5:
I can have the following 5 amex CHARGE cards : Platinum, PRG, Green, Gold, BRG and
I can have the following 5 amex CREDIT Cards : BCE, ED, SPG, Delta Plat, Hilton.
That makes 10 amex cards in total. If I apply for the SPG Biz, I will be denied ( this is the well known 4/5 card rule) but I can be approved for the Biz Plat. I would need to close one of the CREDIT cards to open the SPG biz. Reps don’t understand the nuances of these things and it’s a shame you don’t either.

  10. This is TRUE! I tried to apply for the SPG business card back in Feb and was denied do to too many Amex cards. BUT… I just tried 2 mins ago after reading this article and was APPROVED this time. Thanks for writing this article – I’m so stoked to get in on the 35K points before it was over!!
