If you collect Marriott points, you can transfer points instantly to your Starwood account at a 3:1 ratio.  And vice versa!  And Ritz-Carlton and Marriott have essentially the same rewards program, just with different branding and marketing.

Before you book your stay, be sure to link your loyalty accounts to get an instant status match.  This way you’ll enjoy all your perks regardless of which hotel chain you choose!

1.   Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection

Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection is just about as “on the water” as you can get.  The trade-off is that it’s not as centrally located as other hotels.

Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, and the Sydney Opera House are all relatively close (a 10+ minute walk).

Make sure to sign-up for an activity that gives you great views of the Opera House, like the highly rated BridgeClimb, or riding a Sydney Harbor ferry.

2.   Westin Melbourne

The Westin Melbourne is located in the heart of Australia’s 2nd largest city.  It sits on Collins Street, Melbourne’s “main street,” with plenty of attractions nearby.

Folks who want to take in a show are literally surrounded by venues, like the Athenaeum Theatre and the Regent Theater.  If you’re into beautiful architecture, check out St. Paul’s Cathedral  Or, if you want a behind-the-scenes look at the city, try the Hidden Secrets Tour and let a guide show you the places most tourists miss.

It’s all just steps away from the hotel!

The Sheraton On the Park rates highly with travelers not for the view (it’s only average), but the interior of the hotel.  The lobby is large with thick marble pillars, and the light makes the hotel glow!  The staff also seem to really enjoy going all-out for holiday decorations.

A 3-minute walk from the hotel is the Sydney Tower Eye and Skywalk.  Have dinner at the top and watch the sunset over the harbour!

Also nearby is the Queen Victoria Building, a shopping complex in a historic building.  And check out the stately St. Mary’s Cathedral.

This hotel is located within walking distance to many forms of public transportation.  It’s surrounded by plenty of shops, too!  The popular Pitt Street Mall is just a 10-minute walk, with tons of restaurants and shops.

This hotel is currently undergoing renovations until February.  So I recommend contacting the hotel if you’re worried it will interfere with your stay.

Bonus – Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane

For folks trying to stretch their points, the Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane is a cheaper alternative.  Brisbane is a beautiful city with excellent year-round climate, and lots of fun tours!

The hotel’s location is good, because it’s directly in the center of Brisbane.  The hotel also has a rooftop bar on the 30th floor.

Highly rated activities around the hotel are the CityCat FerryEagle Street Pier, and the Riverlife Adventure Centre.

The hotel is presently near a construction site, so if that might be a deal-breaker, this isn’t the hotel for you.

Save Extra Money by Parking Off-Location and Walking. The Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane Charges Quite a Bit for Parking!

This is a category 4 hotel, so you’ll need 7,000 Starwood points.  Or, you can transfer 21,000 Marriott points to Starwood.

Because rooms here sell for ~$110 per night, this is not a great value for your points.  But you’ll have a difficult time finding a hotel in Australia that costs fewer Marriott or Starwood points!

Need More Marriott or Starwood Points?

1.   Chase Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Credit Cards

Link:   Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card

With the Marriott Rewards Premier personal and small business cards, you’ll earn 80,000 Marriott points after completing minimum spending requirements.

If you get the personal version of the card, you can earn another 7,500 bonus Marriott points when you add an authorized user and make a purchase within the first 3 months of opening your account.  The $85 annual fee is NOT waived for the first year.

The $99 annual fee on the small business version of the card is also NOT waived for the first year.

Check out my review of the offer!

The Chase Ritz-Carlton card comes with 3 Complimentary Nights at any participating Tier 1 to 4 Ritz-Carlton hotel after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.  You’ll also get a $300 annual travel credit to use for qualifying airline purchases like seat upgrades, baggage fees, and lounge passes!

It comes with a $450 annual fee, NOT waived the first year.

But remember, there are NO Ritz-Carlton hotels in Australia.  So you won’t be able to use your sign-up bonus of 3 free nights in a Ritz-Carlton there.  But you can use the points you earn from the card at Starwood and Marriott hotels!

2.   AMEX Starwood Credit Cards

Link:   Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express

Link:   Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express

You can earn 25,000 Starwood points after completing the minimum spending requirements on the Starwood Preferred Guest personal or small business card.

When you pay for hotel stays using your Chase Marriott or Ritz-Carlton card, or AMEX Starwood card, you’ll earn bonus points at all 3 hotel chains.

For everyday non-bonus spending, I recommend the AMEX Starwood cards.  Because you’ll earn 1 Starwood point per $1 you spend, which you can converted to 3 Marriott or Ritz-Carlton points.  That’s much better than the 1 Marriott or Ritz-Carlton point per $1 you spend you’ll get with the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton cards!

And, AMEX cards are easier to get than Chase cards.  That’s because Chase made it more difficult for folks to be approved for cards (excluding the Chase Ritz-Carlton card and a few others) if you’ve opened 5 or more credit cards (from any bank) in the past 24 months (except for certain business cards).

But keep in mind you can only earn the bonus on any AMEX card once per lifetime.

Bottom Line

You can use Marriott and Starwood points to stay at terrific hotels in Australia!

Stay at 5-star hotels like the Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel at Circular Quay with a great view of the Sydney Opera House.  Or book a hotel for fewer points, like the Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane.

Redeeming points can save you hundreds of dollars compared to the cash cost of a room night!

Before you book, link your Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, and Starwood loyalty accounts.  This way you’ll enjoy the benefits of your elite status across all 3 hotel chains!

Which Starwood or Marriott hotel would you suggest for a trip to Australia?
