Which Is a Better Deal? Chase Sapphire Preferred or Starwood AMEX?

Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.   Million Mile Secrets reader, GC, commented: Do you recommend signing up for American Express Starwood Preferred Guest over the Chase Sapphire Preferred?  I will become eligible for Chase cards next month (I’ll no longer have 5 cards opened in the last 24 months) and was contemplating getting the Sapphire Preferred and Freedom. But I’m intrigued by getting the Starwood Preferred Guest AMEX with the highest bonus ever that might not ever be offered again.  Plus, I already have the Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator card and have been using it to earn American Airlines miles.  I could transfer the points I earn with the AMEX Starwood card to American Airlines miles to top off that balance. If I get this card, I’d have to wait longer to become eligible for the Chase cards.  Does anyone have a recommendation?  Thanks. Great question, GC! I've written about why I love the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, and why Chase Ultimate Rewards points are my favorite kind of points!  It's also the top card I recommend if you’re new to miles and points. But there's a limited time 35,000 Starwood points bonus with the personal and small business AMEX Starwood Preferred Guest cards.  I've never seen the cards' bonuses this high.  And it’s likely the last time it will ever be this much.  You must apply before March 30, 2016 for this offer. Which Rewards Card Should You Choose? With great offers like these, it can be hard to figure out which credit card is best.  But I can help you compare them, and decide what makes sense for YOU!

Million Mile Secrets reader, Vin, commented: Some banks do ask for social security number for any authorized card user account.  Does this mean they run a credit check before approving the authorized user? Or just have it on file in case I don’t pay? Why do they need the social security number if the primary user is responsible? Thanks for commenting, Vin! Certain banks ask for a social security number when you add an authorized user.  But they still do NOT run a credit check. Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers. Million Mile Secrets readers, Gary Rees and Alan, started a discussion: Gary commented: Is there a service that can help me maximize my bank points? I am new but have over 300,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points saved up and want to do something over-the-top for my 10th anniversary.  What about transferring to Air Canada Aeroplan at the 1:1 transfer rate, and then to United Airlines?  Is that possible? And Alan replied: Did you ever come up with a way to transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to United Airlines?  Like you, I like United Airlines and was thinking about using Air Canada Aeroplan as the middle step.  I haven’t figured how to move Air Canada Aeroplan miles to United Airlines miles.  Any help would be appreciated. Thank you both for commenting!  I thought I'd jump in to help. You can NOT transfer Air Canada Aeroplan miles to United Airlines miles.  In general, you can not transfer airline miles to another airline.  You Can’t Transfer Miles From 1 Airline to Another. But It’s Still Possible to Book an Award Ticket on United Airlines With AMEX Membership Rewards Points But you CAN book United Airlines flights with AMEX Membership Rewards transfer partners.  That's because a few of them have access to award seats on United Airlines. I'll explain your options and point you in the right direction if you need more help!
