The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is ideal for frequent Delta flyers. It will give you miles for free flights and a huge jump on Delta elite status, which can make those frequent flights more enjoyable.

But it’s the card’s ongoing benefits that are truly mouthwatering: tons of time-saving and money-saving perks like priority boarding, free first checked bag and even an annual companion certificate to bring along a friend or family member.

Let’s look at what you get with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card and whether it’s a good fit for your wallet.

Amex Delta Platinum card review

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express comes with a triple-feature welcome bonus. Through Oct. 30, 2019, you’ll receive 75,000 Delta miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. You’ll also earn a $100 Delta statement credit after making your first Delta purchase in the first three months of account opening. That means a free flight, hard cash, and a boost toward elite status.

Between the introductory bonus of 75,000 Delta miles and at least 3,000 miles from meeting the minimum spending, you’ll have 78,000 Delta miles to use toward award flights. You’re sure to receive a value of at least 1 cent per point and it’s easy to do much better. Domestic flights generally cost 8,000-25,000 Delta miles round-trip (depending on dates and destination).

For example, I often see Delta flights between Salt Lake City and Seattle (a route I fly frequently) for just 17,000 miles round-trip in coach and the tickets usually sell for up to $280. I could purchase two round-trip tickets on this route for just 34,000 Delta miles total, which is worth over $500.

The Welcome Bonus on The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card can Purchase 4 Round Trip Award Tickets on This Route Between Salt Lake City and Seattle.

I was even able to find nonstop flights between Los Angeles and New York City in coach for 24,000 Delta miles round-trip. You could book three coast-to-coast return ticket and still have miles left over.

Benefits and perks of the Amex Delta Platinum card

The card comes with a $195 annual fee (see rates & fees — $250 if application is received on or after 1/30/2020) but like other American Express cards, it’s packed with benefits that can make your flights more comfortable and save you time and money.

Annual companion certificate

Each year, upon renewal of your card, you will receive a digital companion certificate that allows you to add a second passenger to your domestic round-trip flight reservation (within the contiguous 48 United States) by only paying the taxes and fees for that passenger.

With your companion certificate you can bring a pal for almost free on domestic cash flights. (Photo by Cassiohabib/Shutterstock.)

Depending on the route you and your companion fly, the value of the certificate can be worth more than the annual fee, making this one of the best benefits of this card. You will earn your first companion certificate after renewing your card for the first time.

Delta Miles Boost

With Miles Boost, you can earn 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $25,000 or more in eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year. Folks can earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs after spending $50,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year (for a total of up to 20,000 bonus miles each year and 20,000 MQMs each year).

This is a major boost toward Silver Medallion status, which requires you to earn 25,000 MQMs in a year, plus $3,000 Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs).

Silver elite status offers:

  • Unlimited complimentary seat upgrades to Comfort+ or first class as available within 24 hours of departure
  • First checked bag free for you and up to eight travel companions (already offered by the card)
  • Priority check-in
  • Priority boarding (already offered by the card)
  • Exclusive pricing on a CLEAR membership ($79 per year instead of $179 per year)
  • Priority waitlist for seat upgrades
  • Elite status on SkyTeam partner airlines

For folks who are likely to meet the minimum spending requirements each year for this perk, this card is an incredible deal.

First bag checked free

With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll get your first bag checked for free on Delta flights for yourself and up to eight companions traveling on the same reservation. This normally costs $30 each way ($60 round-trip) per person, so this could be worth up to $540 per round-trip flight if you were traveling with eight other people (9 travelers x $60 round-trip cost per bag).

If you fly Delta frequently, this perk can more than cover the annual fee.

Priority boarding

You and up to eight passengers on your reservation can board your flight when Zone 1 Priority Boarding is called. As overhead space is becoming hard to come by, this also ensures you can find a spot for your carry-on right at your seat.

Discounted Delta Sky Club access

You and up to two traveling companions can stop by a Delta Sky Club lounge for a discounted fee of $29 per person. The lounges offer complimentary snacks and beverages, high-speed Wi-Fi, satellite TV and private restrooms, perfect for long layovers.

Inflight savings

Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express cardholders save 20% off eligible Delta inflight purchases when they use the card. This includes food and beverage purchases or audio headsets.

The discount is applied in the form of a statement credit equal to 20% of the purchase total that will be credited to the card at the end of the billing cycle.

Extended warranty

When you make an eligible purchase with the card, the original manufacturer’s warranty can be extended up to two additional years on eligible warranties of five years or less. You’ll save money you would have otherwise paid for a pricey extended warranty.

Return protection

If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days of the purchase date with your Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express and the merchant won’t take it back, you may be refunded the full purchase price, up to $300 per item and a maximum of $1,000 per year.

ShopRunner membership

This card comes with free ShopRunner membership, which offers free, unlimited two-day shipping at a wide selection of stores. Membership normally costs $79 per year, but you’ll receive this membership at no additional cost as a Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express cardmember.

Amex Offers

Amex Offers are targeted discounts or bonus miles on everyday purchases. Just add the deal to your card and make an eligible purchase to earn a statement credit or bonus miles.

Is the Amex Delta Platinum card worth it?

The card has a $195 annual fee (See Rates & Fees). Whether or not this is worth it for the long term will depend on the amount of travel you do each year with Delta.

For those who frequently travel on Delta, this card can pay for itself with free checked bags and MQMs which boost you to the next status tier. And the companion certificate you earn each year upon renewal will almost always be worth more than the cost of the annual fee.

Active-duty members of the military can get the annual fee waived by American Express, which makes this an incredible deal.

How to earn miles with the Amex Delta Platinum card

With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll earn Delta SkyMiles for all purchases you make with the card.

There are two categories for bonus miles:

  • Earn 2 Delta miles per dollar spent when you use your card for purchases directly with Delta
  • Earn 1 Delta mile per dollar spent on all other purchases

So you’ll earn double miles on your Delta purchases including flights, Sky Club memberships, Delta Vacations packages, seat upgrades and inflight purchases of food, beverages and audio headsets. All other purchases earn 1 mile per dollar spent.

To use your Delta miles for award flights, visit the Delta website and search for a flight as you normally would. Delta no longer has an award chart, so you’ll have to check specific dates and routes for the price of an award flight.

At the top of the flight results, there is an option to show the price in currency (the default), miles, or miles + cash. Select the “miles” option and you can see the cost of each flight in miles, plus any fees you will need to cover out of pocket (generally less than $15 for domestic flights).

You Can Manage and View Your Current Mileage Balance Online, and Find Award Flights By Selecting "Miles" in the Pay Using Section
You can manage and view your current mileage balance online and find award flights by selecting “miles” at the top.

You’ll be able to see Delta flights and flights on their partner airlines, so you’re not limited to using your miles for Delta flights.

If you can’t find award flights you want, you can still easily redeem miles using Pay With Miles. With Pay With Miles, your miles are worth 1 cent each (in increments of 5,000 miles) toward paid Delta flights. But you’ll typically get much better value by redeeming for award flights.

Amex Delta Platinum card customer service

American Express has a terrific reputation, which means you shouldn’t have any trouble getting problems resolved or questions answered. Their customer support and fraud protection is among the best in the industry.

Credit cards similar to the Delta Platinum card

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles card is a great card for Delta flyers who travel frequently. The opportunity to earn MQMs and a companion certificate generally make it worth the annual fee, but depending on your purchase habits and travel frequency, here are other Delta cards to consider:

  • Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express: Lower annual fee of $95 per year, waived the first year (See Rates & Fees), with a welcome bonus of 60,000 Delta miles after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Plus, you’ll earn a $50 statement credit after making your first Delta purchase in the same timeframe.
  • Delta Reserve® Credit Card from American Express: Premium travel card with a $450 annual fee (See Rates & Fees — $550 if application is received on or after 1/30/2020). Includes a Delta lounge membership and a welcome offer of 75,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Great for people who fly on Delta often.

Amex only allows folks to earn the welcome bonus on a card once, per person, per lifetime. So if you’ve had one of these cards in the past, you won’t be able to earn the same introductory bonus a second time.

Otherwise, reports online indicate most folks with good credit are eligible for these cards. Remember that many factors are considered during the application process other than your credit score. Your credit score can give you an idea on your approval chances, but the bank makes the final decision.

Bottom line

The offer on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express is great for folks who frequently travel with Delta. It has a welcome bonus of 75,000 Delta bonus miles and 5,000 bonus MQMs after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of opening your account (that offer ends Oct. 30, 2019). You’ll also earn a $100 statement credit after making your first Delta purchase in the same timeframe.

If you value Delta elite status and can use money-saving perks like the annual companion certificate and free checked bag, this card is well worth the $195 annual fee. But if you don’t fly Delta frequently, you might consider other Amex Delta cards with a lower fee.

I am wondering if I can book my flight with mileages earned from my Delta Amex Platinum and add and use my annual companion certificate? Anyone tried that before successfully? Or do I have to pay cash for my ticket in order to use the annual companion certificate?

Tim Suttles post below says it all. This card is a scam. It is next to impossible to use the companion certificate for any reasonable set of flights you may want. Sure, you can use it to fly to some inexpensive fight to out of the way airports, but none of the good flights and no good non stop flights. I also tried to use miles and the companion certificate together, but after doing the math I found I had to use the same miles for 2 people and the companion certificate as I would if I just booked with miles alone. In other words, if I used miles the certificate added no advantage. I agree with Tim’s post below, this card is a waste of $195. It would be better to just use the Gold Miles $95 a year card, which we previously had, and enjoy free bags and at least some priority boarding. Sorry for the bad news, but hope you avoid the mistake we made of getting this Platinum card.

This offer isn’t that good and I’m not sure why they would be pushing it other than for a referral bonus. Amex/Delta is sending targeted mailers for 70,000 miles after $2000 spend. Plus a $100 statement credit after you first purchase.

I had the Delta American Express Platinum card for 15 years and always agonized over it or other cards. After an unbiased review I saw I have been able to use the companion ticket twice in 15 years…tried again this year and amazingly every option I wanted (not holidays) had no companion tickets available. I highly discourage anyone from getting this card and look at the Amex Platinum or other cards if you want travel benefits. Not sure any are worth it but now 100% know this one is NOT. Save yourself the $195 per year…it is not worth it…do the math. Again note, the companion ticket is a scam and rarely used…would love to see the stats on how many are issued versus used. Note I am a Million Miler too.

Does a drink or food purchase (of a few $) on a Delta flight get you the $100 statement credit?

Just applied/accepted this card. Can I purchase a $100 Delta gift card and receive the $100 statement credit?

In the AMEX Delta Platinum application details (t) it reads: gift cards are excluded.
