The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is an ideal card for frequent Delta flyers. With a huge welcome bonus of 70,000 Delta miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles after meeting minimum spending requirements, and a ton of money-saving perks, it’s a terrific card to consider right now! This limited-time increased offer ends September 19, 2018.
With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card, you’ll also earn an annual companion certificate each account anniversary which you can use for a round-trip free flight within the mainland US (plus taxes and fees). Depending on the route, this could be worth hundreds of dollars!
Folks can redeem the welcome bonus for potentially $1,000 or more in award flights on Delta and their partners. Or at very least, use them to Pay With Miles for a value of $700 in paid airfare. That’s a sweet deal from one card!
Let’s look at what you get with the Platinum Delta SkyMiles card and whether it’s a good fit for your wallet!
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card Welcome Bonus Is Worth $1,000+
For a limited time, the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is offering a welcome bonus of 70,000 Delta miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of opening your account. But you must apply by September 19, 2018.
Between the intro bonus of 70,000 Delta miles and at least 3,000 miles from meeting the minimum spending, you’ll have 73,000 Delta miles to use towards award flights. That’s worth a ton of Big Travel!
For example, I was able to find non-stop flights between Los Angeles and New York City in coach for just 24,000 Delta miles round-trip. So you could get 3 of these coast-to-coast tickets (24,000 miles x 3 = 72,000 miles total) worth ~$320 each for a grand total value of ~$960!
Domestic flights generally cost 8,000 to 25,000 Delta miles round-trip depending on your dates and destination. I frequently see flights between Salt Lake City and Seattle (a route I fly frequently) on Delta for just 17,000 Delta miles round-trip in coach, and the ticket usually sells for $250 to $280.
So I could purchase 4 round-trip tickets on this route for just 68,000 Delta miles total, which is worth $1,000+!
You can squeeze a great deal of travel from the Platinum Delta SkyMiles welcome bonus!
How to Earn Points With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles AMEX Card
With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll earn Delta miles for all the purchases that you make with the card.
There are 2 simple categories for bonus miles:
- Earn 2 Delta miles per $1 spent when you use your card for purchases directly with Delta
- Earn 1 Delta mile per $1 spent on all other purchases
So you’ll earn double miles on your Delta purchases including flights, SkyClub memberships, Delta Vacations packages, seat upgrades, and in-flight purchases of food, beverages, and audio headsets. All other purchases earn 1 mile per $1 spent.
How to Use Your Points
To redeem your points for award flights, visit the Delta website and search for a flight as you normally would. Delta no longer has an award chart, so you’ll have to check specific dates and routes for the price of an award flight.
At the top of the flight results there is an option to show the price in currency (the default), miles, or Miles + Cash. Select the “miles” option and you can see the cost of each flight in miles, plus any applicable fees that you will need to cover out of pocket (generally less than $15 for most domestic flights).
Remember, you’ll be able to see Delta flights and flights on their partner airlines. So you’re not just limited to using your miles for Delta flights!
If you can’t find award flights you want, you can still easily redeem miles using Pay With Miles. With Pay With Miles, your miles are worth 1 cent each (in increments of 5,000 miles) toward paid Delta flights. But you’ll typically get much better value by redeeming for award flights instead.
Benefits of the Delta Platinum Card
Like other American Express cards, this card is packed with great benefits. These perks can help make your flights more comfortable and save you time and money!
Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs)
When you meet the minimum spending requirements on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll also earn 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs). These are miles used to qualify for elite status, and can give you a head start (or an added boost) to reaching the next level of status!
For example, to reach Silver Medallion® status you’d need to earn 25,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) and spend $3,000 Medallion® Qualification Dollars (MQDs) in a calendar year. So earning 10,000 MQMs from the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express can get you more than a third of the way there!
Annual Companion Certificate
Each year, upon the renewal of your card, you will receive a digital companion certificate that allows you add a second passenger to your domestic round-trip flight reservation (within the contiguous 48 US states) by only paying the taxes and fees for that passenger.
Depending on the route, you can get incredible value from this benefit!
The companion certificate is earned each account anniversary, and the value of the companion flight can be worth more than the annual fee, making this one of the best benefits of this card. You will earn your first companion certificate after renewing your card for the first time.
Delta SkyMiles Miles Boost
With Miles Boost, you can earn 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $25,000 or more in eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year. Folks can earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs after spending $50,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year (for a total of up to 20,000 bonus miles each year and 20,000 MQMs each year).
This perk can really boost you towards Medallion® elite status, which offers incredible benefits on Delta flights. After you earn 25,000 MQMs in a year (plus $3,000 MQDs) you can achieve Silver Medallion® Status.
Silver Elite Status offers:
- Unlimited complimentary seat upgrades to Comfort+ or First Class seating as available 24 hours of departure
- First checked bag free for you and up to 8 travel companions (already offered by the card)
- Priority check-in
- Priority boarding (already offered by the card)
- Exclusive pricing on a CLEAR membership ($79 per year instead of $179 per year)
- Priority waitlist for seat upgrades
- Elite status on SkyTeam partner airlines
For folks that are likely to meet the minimum spending requirements each year for this perk, this is an incredible deal! Because it not only earns you bonus miles towards more award flights (on top of the bonus miles you earn from normal spending), but it also helps you achieve elite status, which leads to valuable benefits while traveling on Delta flights.
First Checked Bag Free
With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express, you’ll get your first checked bag for free on Delta flights for yourself and up to 8 companions traveling on the same reservation. This normally costs $25 each way ($50 round-trip) per person, so this could be worth up to $450 per round-trip flight if you were traveling with 8 other people (9 travelers x $50 round-trip cost per bag = $450).
If you fly Delta frequently, this perk alone can more than make up for the annual fee!
You and up to 8 passengers on your reservation can board your flight when Zone 1 Priority Boarding is called. There’s no question that priority boarding takes a lot of the stress and annoyance out of the boarding process.
As overhead space is becoming harder to come by, this also ensures that you can find space for your carry-on luggage right at your seat.
Discounted Delta Sky Club Access
You and up to 2 traveling companions can stop by a Delta Sky Club lounge for a discounted fee of $29 per person. The lounges offer complimentary snacks and beverages, high-speed Wi-Fi access, satellite TV, and private restrooms. If you have a long layover this can make your wait a lot more enjoyable.
Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express candholders save 20% off eligible Delta in-flight purchases when you use the card. This includes food and beverage purchases or audio headsets.
The discount is applied in the form of a statement credit equal to 20% of the purchase total that will be credited to your card at the end of the billing cycle.
When you make an eligible purchase with the card, the original manufacturer’s warranty can be extended up to 2 additional years on eligible warranties of 5 years or less. So you’ll save money if you would have otherwise paid for a pricey extended warranty!
If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days of the date of purchase with your Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express and the merchant won’t take it back, you may be refunded the full purchase price, up to $300 per item and a maximum of $1,000 per year!
It’s nice to have that peace of mind!
This card comes with free ShopRunner membership, which offers free, unlimited 2-day shipping at a wide selection of stores. Membership normally costs $79 per year, but you’ll receive this membership at no additional cost as a Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express cardmember.
AMEX Offers are targeted discounts or bonus miles on everyday purchases. Just add the deal to your card and make an eligible purchase to earn a statement credit or bonus miles!
Is the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Card Worth the Annual Fee?
The annual fee on this card is $195 which is NOT waived the first year. Whether or not this is worth it for the long term will depend on the amount of travel you do each year with Delta.
For those who frequently travel on Delta, this card can pay for itself between free checked bags and MQMs which can boost you to the next status tier. And the companion certificate you earn each year upon renewal will almost always be worth more than the cost of the annual fee.
Active duty military members can get the annual fee waived by American Express, which makes this an incredible deal.
Does the Platinum Delta Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?
Who Is Eligible for the Platinum Delta Card?
AMEX only allows folks to earn the welcome bonus on a card once, per person, per lifetime. So if you’ve had this exact card in the past, you won’t be able to earn the intro bonus a second time.
Otherwise, reports online indicate most folks with good credit would be eligible for this card. Remember that many factors are considered during the application process other than your credit score. So while your credit score can give you an idea on your approval chances, the bank has the final decision on the matter.
Customer Support for the Platinum Delta Card
American Express has a terrific reputation, which means you shouldn’t have any problem getting anything resolved or your questions answered. Their customer support and fraud protection is one of the best in the industry.
