INSIDER SECRET: You can earn Delta elite status just by spending on this credit card even if you never take a single flight.
With three personal and three business Delta AMEX credit cards available, picking the right card for you and your small business can be a challenge. It’s a push and pull between earning the best bonus offer and the most valuable and relevant perks while keeping your costs low.
Enter the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express, a middle ground between the entry level Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express and the ultra-premium Delta Reserve for Business Credit Card.
Not only will you earn 35,000 Delta miles with the welcome offer after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening, but also you’ll earn 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) to help you qualify for Delta elite status. Big spending businesses can earn up to 20,000 additional MQMs and redeemable miles each year, as well as a Medallion® Qualifying Dollar (MQD) waiver that gets you one step closer to elite status. You’ll also enjoy a number of elite-like perks, including free checked bags, priority boarding, and a 20% savings on inflight purchases.
Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card Review: A Valuable Bonus for Award Travelers and Delta Elites
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles for Business Credit Card is currently offering a welcome bonus of 35,000 Delta SkyMiles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. You’ll also earn a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase in the same time frame.
Because Delta removed its award chart a few years back and switched to dynamic award pricing, it’s tough to put an exact value on this bonus. The value of Delta miles varies depending on how you redeem them. At minimum, the 35,000-mile welcome bonus is worth $350 in Delta airfare when you use Delta Pay With Miles. With Pay With Miles, Amex Delta cardholders can redeem miles at a rate of 1 cent each toward paid flights with no blackout dates.
For example, I was able to find non-stop flights between Los Angeles and New York City in coach for 24,000 Delta miles round-trip. So you could get a coast-to-coast return ticket worth ~$320, and still have 12,000 Delta miles left over.
Delta has also upped its game recently, offering frequent Delta SkyMiles deals flash award sales for both domestic and international flights. If you’re flexible enough to wait for one of these deals to pop up, you can stretch your miles even further. You shouldn’t have to wait too long either, as we’re now seeing several award sales launched each month.
How to Earn Miles With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card
Cobranded airline credit cards are generally not the best for earning miles on everyday spending. With the Platinum Delta SkyMiles for Business Credit Card, you’ll earn :
- 2 Delta miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases
- 1 Delta mile per dollar spent everywhere else
You’ll come out ahead booking your travel with Chase Sapphire Reserve or The Platinum Card® from American Express. The main reason to spend on this credit card is if you’re trying to earn an MQD waiver or earn bonus redeemable miles or MQMs toward Delta elite status (but more on that later).
How to Use Delta Miles
Delta’s lack of an award chart makes it hard to speak about SkyMiles redemption in general terms, since prices vary on a day-to-day basis. By the time you sit down to read this post, there’s a good chance that prices will be different than what I see while I’m writing this.
For example, one-way economy awards between Chicago (ORD) and Atlanta (ATL) vary from 6,500 miles on the absolute lowest end up to 13,500 miles. You can expect to pay just over 10,000 miles for most domestic economy awards, meaning your welcome bonus would get you at least three one-way flights within the US.
The variation on international routes is even more extreme. Take a look at these one-way business-class awards from Atlanta (ATL) to Amsterdam (AMS), which differ in price by as much as 3x day to day.
Your best bet for using Delta miles at a good value is to wait for one of Delta’s award sales. While the Delta SkyMiles program as a whole doesn’t offer the best value, these sales can be an incredible deal for a flexible traveler. This year alone we’ve seen some of the following discounts:
- Round-trip to Australia for 44,000 miles in economy
- Round-trip to South America for as low as 32,000 miles in economy
- Domestic round-trips for as low as 11,000 miles
We’ve also seen a number of sales for Delta Comfort+ and Delta One, as well, but these are just a few examples.
Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card Benefits
Annual Companion Certificate
Each year on account renewal, you’ll receive an annual companion certificate, valid for round-trip main cabin domestic travel. You just need to pay the taxes and fees, which will be low on a ticket like this.
If you spend $25,000 a year on this card, you’ll earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs. Spend $50,000 total and you’ll earn an additional 10,000 miles and 10,000 MQMs. This deal stacks especially well with the next perk …
Spending $25,000 in a year will waive the MQD requirement for qualifying for Silver, Gold or Platinum Delta elite status. The waiver for Delta Diamond elite status was raised and now requires $250,000 a year in spending.
So if someone opens the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card under the current bonus offer and spends $50,000 in the first calendar year, they’d earn a grand total of 25,000 MQMs (5,000 from the bonus and 20,000 from the miles boost) and receive an MQD waiver. This means it’s possible to earn Delta Silver elite status without actually setting foot on a plane.

Is the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card Worth the Annual Fee?
An annual fee of $195 is pretty steep for a non ‘premium’ credit card, but the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card is still compelling. Frequent Delta travelers could offset the annual fee by using perks like the free checked bags and the companion certificate, and Delta elites (or wannabe elites) can get serious value out of the MQD waiver and miles boost option.
Does the Platinum Delta SkyMiles for Business Credit Card Charge Foreign Transaction Fees?
No. (See Rates & Fees)
Who Is Eligible for the Platinum Delta SkyMiles for Business Credit Card?
This is a small business credit card, so you’ll need a for-profit business to qualify. However, you may be eligible and not realize it, because even side hustles or part-time businesses, like reselling online or running an Airbnb count. Here’s our guide to filling out an Amex business card application.
Because American Express only lets you earn the bonus once per lifetime on a credit card, you should be eligible for this bonus as long as you’ve never had this card before. Make sure you study up on Amex’s other application rules, including the fact that unofficially, you can only get approved for two new cards in a 90-day period and the fact that Amex typically limits you to only holding five credit cards at once (this doesn’t count charge cards like the American Express® Gold Card and Amex Platinum).
Similar Cards to the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card

The Delta Reserve for Business has a $450 annual fee (See Rates & Fees), but its main selling point is a Delta Sky Club lounge membership which can be a great value.
The Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card is a mid-level card between the Gold and the Reserve, offering a welcome bonus of 35,000 Delta SkyMiles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. You’ll also earn a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase in the same time frame.
You’ll also get great perks without breaking the bank, including a free first checked bag, priority boarding and travel protections.
