With so many small business cards on the market, it’s not always easy to know what’s the best option for you. Thankfully, with the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get amazing value for the annual fee, as long as you take advantage of the card’s many benefits.

This card emphasizes helping small businesses earn, save and protect travel expenditures, and it also helps manage all of the moving parts of company spending with its built-in expense management tools. It comes with a welcome bonus of 45,000 Delta SkyMiles after meeting minimum spending requirements.

It’s important to consider the $250 annual fee (see rates and fees) in comparison to the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card benefits. If you can make the most of these perks, the annual fee is well worth it.

Is the Platinum Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card annual fee worth it?

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card comes with 45,000 Delta SkyMiles and a statement credit after meeting requirements (terms apply):

  • 45,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new Card in the first 3 months.
  • $100 Statement Credit after your first Delta purchase on your new Card in the first 3 months.

Those bonus miles only scratch the surface of what this card has to offer, though. Companion flights for next to nothing, free checked bags and priority boarding are more of the swoon-worthy perks of the card.

Savings and earnings when booking

We have an extensive breakdown of how to use Delta SkyMiles to get the highest Delta miles value. If you’ve got a business expense on your horizon, it might just be the right time to put it toward this welcome bonus.

Other perks outlive a one-time sign-up bonus, though — an annual status boost is offered every year, giving you bonus MQMs if you meet certain spending thresholds. You can earn 10,000 MQMs after you spend $25,000+ on your card in a calendar year. And you’ll earn another 10,000 MQMs after reaching $50,000 or more in spending in the same timeframe.

You can also earn a Medallion® Qualification Dollar (MQD) waiver for status (up to Platinum Medallion) when you spend $25,000 or more on the card during the calendar year and if you spend $250,000+ during the same timeframe you’ll earn a MQD waiver for Diamond status.

Your everyday spend will also get you working toward free flights beyond the welcome bonus. You’ll earn:

  • 3 Delta miles per dollar spent on eligible purchases made directly with Delta and with hotels
  • 1.5 Delta miles per dollar on purchases of $5,000 or more
  • 1 Delta mile per dollar spent on other purchases
  • Terms apply

On top of the miles earnings, the card’s companion certificate can save you loads of money on flights. The companion certificate is an extremely valuable perk that will allow anyone you choose to fly with you for only the price of taxes and fees in Domestic Main Cabin. It’s valid for one round-trip ticket, so, if you’ve got a colleague you want with you at an upcoming convention, you’ll love this perk.

Protection and ease at the airport

Your Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card helps you book flights without a headache of blowing cash, but the card also helps you when you arrive at the airport.

A long trip or the nuisance of lugging a carry-on through the airport can lead travelers to want to check a bag. The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card lets you check your first bag for free, along with up to eight companions on the same reservation. This easily can save you up to $60 per round-trip flight, per person. Pretty guiltless, right?

Plus, if you worry about your luggage at the airport, it might ease your mind that this card has a protective baggage insurance plan. When you book with your Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card, you can be compensated up to $1,250 for an eligible lost, damaged or stolen carry-on and up to $500 for a checked bag.

Your gate experience can be a breeze, too, because you won’t have to wait to board last with the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card — you’ll always have the opportunity to board early on, with the Main Cabin 1 Priority group.

Oh, and it comes with up to a $100 credit for either your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application, which will speed you through airport security checkpoints. Read our post on TSA PreCheck vs Global Entry to see which fits your lifestyle (and how fantastic they both are!).

Now that you’re on board, kick back, relax and enjoy 20% off in-flight purchases (think: food, beverages, and audio headsets) by means of a statement credit. You can’t go wrong!

Benefits for when you’re on the ground, too

If you’re catching on to how this credit card breakdown has been going, you might guess that this card has something in store for you when you arrive at your destination, too.

For starters, if you’re headed out of the country, you’ll enjoy zero foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees), so, there’s one less thing to think about while abroad. Plus you’ll never stop racking up the miles on your Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card, no matter where you are.

Bottom line

If you’re looking to earn Delta SkyMiles and you fly Delta often enough to make use of perks like a companion certificate, free checked bag and priority boarding, this card is a great pick.

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business currently offers a bonus of 45,000 bonus miles and 5,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new Card in the first 3 months. Plus, earn a $100 Statement Credit after your first Delta purchase on your new Card in the first 3 months.

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card isn’t just worth the annual fee for the welcome bonus. Small business owners can earn lots of Delta miles, plus save money and have peace of mind through all stages of travel — in the air and on the ground. This card is particularly valuable if you fly Delta often and can make use of perks like the companion certificate, free checked bags and priority boarding.
