I have the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card.  And if I’m being honest, I opened the card for its sign-up bonus which is worth hundreds and hundreds of dollars (currently worth $500 in travel after meeting minimum spending requirements).

That sign-up bonus makes opening this card a no-brainer.  Especially since the card’s $95 annual fee is waived the first year.

But is the card worth KEEPING after you’ve spent the bonus?  Here’s a look at the Capital One Venture’s benefits and perks, so you can decide for yourself.

The Capital One Venture earns points you can redeem for flights, hotels, rental cars, even certain tours.  But it has many other benefits & perks

Let’s get the candy out of the way first.

When you open the Capital One Venture, you’ll receive 50,000 bonus miles ($500 in travel) after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.  Read this post if you think that’s a daunting task.

But what other benefits and perks come with the card?

In my mind, this question really hinges on one matter:   Do you already have other travel credit cards?  The Capital One Venture doesn’t come with many unique travel perks (though it has a couple).  If you’ve been involved in the miles & points hobby for a while, it’s very probable that you already own a card with these same benefits.

10 Capital One Miles per $1 at

Through January 31, 2020, you’ll earn 10 Venture miles per $1 you spend on hotel stays when you book through this link and pay with your card.

Capital One miles are worth 1 cent each, so earning 10 miles per $1 is like receiving 10% back on your hotel stay.  That’s pretty great by itself, but remember that the Rewards program also gives you an effective 10% back on your stay.  So you’re basically earning 20% back on stays through!

This is a feature you won’t find on ANY other card except the Capital One Venture branded cards.  And it’s a good one.

The downfall with this perk is that you won’t earn hotel points or elite night credits for your stay.  And if you have any hotel elite status, the hotel won’t recognize it.  To receive those perks, you must book directly with the hotel (not through

Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit

This is one of the few cards with an annual fee below $400 that comes with a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit.

Global Entry is a fantastic program that saves international travelers lots of time by getting them quickly through US Customs and Immigration when returning to the US from abroad.  It also comes with a TSA PreCheck membership, which is a boon for domestic airport security.  With TSA PreCheck, you won’t have to remove your:

  • Shoes
  • Jacket
  • Belt
  • Laptop
  • Toiletries

That’s a big time-saver.  Plus, TSA PreCheck security lines are often much shorter!

No Foreign Transaction Fees

Some non-travel credit cards charge a 3% fee for any purchases made outside the US.  That can even include reserving foreign hotels on the internet from within the US!  The Capital One Venture doesn’t charge these stupid fees, so it’s a good card to use internationally.

Lost Luggage Insurance

You’ll receive up to $3,000 per trip when your luggage is lost from theft or misdirection by the airline, cruise, etc.  The card will reimburse you the difference between the actual value of your belongings minus the money you receive from the common carrier.

So for example, if the airline misplaces your $6,000 cashmere sweater and the airline may compensate you $3,000, the Capital One Venture will cover another $3,000.  Crisis averted!

This does not cover certain items like money, cell phones, art, glasses, or contact lenses.

Rental Car Insurance

The Capital One Venture offers secondary car insurance against collision or theft.

Secondary coverage means your personal or business car insurance company pays first.  You’ll have to pay your insurance deductible but this benefit could still save you a ton.  Just note that Visa Signature benefits state you’re only covered if your rental period lasts:

  • 15 or fewer consecutive days within your country of residence
  • 31 or fewer consecutive days outside your country of residence

Best to split up your rental into multiple reservations if you plan to rent longer!

Roadside Dispatch

This is basically like a AAA service, except you have to pay every time.  You’ll receive 24 hour access to roadside help, including:

  • Standard towing with up to 5 miles included (your car must weigh 10,000 pounds or less)
  • Tire changes (you’ll need an inflated spare)
  • Jump starts
  • Lockout service (no key replacement)
  • Fuel delivery of up to 5 gallons (plus the cost of fuel)
  • Standard winching

The access is free, but service calls are currently $69.95.  NOT cheap, but definitely nice to have in case of an emergency.

Travel Accident Insurance

You, your spouse, and your unmarried dependent children can receive up to $250,000 of insurance for tragedies along your travels.  Covered accidents include accidental loss of:

  • Life
  • Limbs
  • Sight
  • Speech
  • Hearing

You’re covered so long as the accident happens while you’re riding as a passenger in, entering, or exiting any “licensed common carrier” (like an airplane, cruise ship, etc.)  You must buy the entire cost of your fare with the Capital One Venture to qualify.

Extended Warranty Protection

The Capital One Venture extended warranty protection will double the US manufacturer’s warranty up to 1 year.  Here are some restrictions you should know about:

  • Qualifying warranties must be 3 years or less
  • You have to purchase the item entirely with your Capital One Venture
  • Limited to no more than the original price of your item (as shown on your receipt), minus shipping and handling
  • Valid for up to $10,000 per claim, $50,000 per cardholder

You can’t buy stuff like motorized vehicles, computer software, or medical equipment.  Check out the full benefits guide to see the other exclusions.

Bottom Line

Is the Capital One Venture worth opening?  Doi!  The card’s annual fee is waived the first year, and the sign-up bonus is worth $500 in free travel!

Whether the card makes a regular appearance in your wallet after that depends on whether you value the following perks:

  • 10 Capital One miles at
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Lost luggage insurance
  • Rental car insurance
  • Roadside dispatch
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Extended warranty protection

The vast majority of those benefits exist on other cards you probably already have.  If not, the card can certainly be worth the annual fee.

I have the card, and plan to downgrade it within the next few months.  Other cards that I like more already give me the travel insurance I want (and better), including the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (it’s saved me thousands).
