Yesterday I told y’all about the upcoming Cathay Pacific card from Synchrony Bank.
You can now apply for the Cathay Pacific credit card. You’ll earn 25,000 Cathay Pacific miles after spending $2,500 on purchases in the first 90 days of opening your account.
I’ll help you decide if this is a good card for your situation!
Cathay Pacific Card Now Open to Applications
Last year, Cathay Pacific announced they would be introducing a US credit card in early 2017. And that time has come!
You can now apply for the new Cathay Pacific card from Synchrony Bank. You’ll earn 25,000 Cathay Pacific miles after spending $2,500 on purchases in the first 90 days of opening your account. You’ll also get:
- 2 miles per $1 on Cathay Pacific purchases
- 1.5 miles per $1 on dining
- 1.5 miles per $1 on purchases outside the US
- 1 mile per $1 for all other purchases
- NO foreign transaction fees
- Automatic Marco Polo Green status (priority check-in and boarding)
The card comes with a $95 annual fee, NOT waived the first year.
The bonus categories aren’t great, either. For example, you’ll earn 2 miles per $1 when you use your Cathay Pacific card for Cathay Pacific airfare. But you can earn more miles per $1 on flights by using your Citi Prestige or The Platinum Card® from American Express, then transferring those points to Cathay Pacific.
Note: Through February 28, 2017, you’ll get a 30% bonus when you transfer certain hotel points to Cathay Pacific.
I do think the 1.5 miles per $1 on purchases outside the US is interesting. I’ve never seen a bonus category like that!
You won’t get very far with 25,000 Cathay Pacific miles. But if you plan on transferring your American Express Membership Rewards or Citi ThankYou points to Cathay Pacific, then this card’s sign-up bonus is just as valuable as 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points or Citi ThankYou points!
Before you apply, read my posts on how to make the most of your Cathay Pacific miles and the secret ways to book Cathay Pacific award flights.
If you already have lots of cards from other banks, you might consider this card. It’s issued by Synchrony Bank, and most folks in miles & points don’t have many cards from them.
Again, I do NOT recommend this card for folks new to miles & points. That’s because applying for this card can make it harder to be approved for more valuable travel credit cards later. Check out my posts on the best cards for beginners, and my favorite card for folks just starting out!
