Some of us are being targeted for a 10% to 50% bonus when they transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Hilton.  This includes folks who have cards like:

Normally, the transfer ratio is 1:2, so 1,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points usually gets you 2,000 Hilton points.  If you’re targeted for the highest bonus (50%), it improves the ratio to 1:3.

This bonus could be useful if you have a Hilton award stay coming up and are short a few Hilton points.  But typically, we don’t recommend transferring AMEX Membership Rewards points to Hilton, because you can get much more value from your AMEX Membership Rewards points when you transfer them to airline partners like Delta, Singapore Airlines, or Air Canada.

Here’s more about this targeted AMEX Membership Rewards Hilton transfer bonus.

AMEX Membership Rewards Transfer Bonus to Hilton (Targeted)

Log into your AMEX account to see if you’ve been targeted for this deal.  There are reports online and from our team with anywhere from a 10% to 50% bonus.

My wife got a 20% bonus and I got a 30% bonus, but this is a no go for us.

I Received a Targeted 30% Transfer Bonus, but It’s Not Enough to Make Me Want to Transfer Points

The normal transfer rate is 1 American Express Membership point to 2 Hilton points, which isn’t great.  Hilton points are worth, on average, ~0.5 cents each, so with the regular ratio you’d essentially get a value of ~1 cent per AMEX Membership Rewards point (1 AMEX point = 2 Hilton points X 0.5 cents).

However, if you have the 50% bonus, the ratio improves to 1 AMEX Membership Rewards point to ~3 Hilton points, or an average value of ~1.5 cents per AMEX Membership Rewards point (1 AMEX point = 3 Hilton points X 0.5 cents).

Transferring AMEX Membership Rewards points to hotel partners like Hilton usually only makes sense in specific circumstances (even with this transfer bonus), like if you’re short points for an award or have come across an extra-valuable redemption.  Otherwise, you’ll usually do much better moving AMEX Membership Rewards points to airline partners.

Plus, there are lots of other easy ways to earn Hilton points, from excellent cards like:

With any of the 3 Hilton cards above, you’ll get Hilton elite status, which allows you to stretch Hilton Honors points even farther by getting a 5th night free and avoiding resort fees on stays booked fully with points!

Bottom Line

I wouldn’t be in a hurry to take advantage of this targeted AMEX Membership Rewards Hilton transfer bonus, especially if your bonus is under 30%.  Even with a bonus, you’ll usually get much more value by transferring AMEX points to airline partners.

It’s much easier to earn Hilton points directly from Hilton branded cards, such as:
