INSIDER SECRET: Recently Hyatt and American Airlines partnered to offer reciprocal benefits including points earning and elite status opportunities. If you have Hyatt Explorist status or higher you might be targeted to fast track your way to American Airlines status.
American Airlines is targeting new accounts with a promotion it ran a couple of times earlier this year. If you’re eligible you’ll get a free Gold, Platinum or Platinum Pro elite status trial. You need to register by September 25, 2019, at which point your American Airlines status will be valid until December 31, 2019.
With the elite status trial, you’ll also have an opportunity to extend the status through January 31, 2021.
Free American Airlines Status Promotion
You can check to see if you’re targeted by clicking here and logging into your account. If you’re eligible, the offer will be listed under the “Promotions” tab on your AAdvantage account page.
Check out our American Airlines status guide to learn more about the perks of each level.
The details of each targeted promotion vary, but some accounts have an opportunity to extend their status through January 31, 2021. If you’re eligible you only need to meet these requirements to extend your status:
- Gold – 7,000 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) and 850 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQD)
- Platinum – 12,500 EQM and 1,500 EQD
- Platinum Pro – 20,000 EQM and 2,400 EQD
Most of these thresholds are only one-fourth of what you’d normally need to earn the equivalent status, but you also only have roughly one-fourth the amount of time to meet them.
The Points Guy reports that some accounts targeted for Gold or Platinum status are also being given a limited number of 500-mile upgrades and Platinum Pro status comes with unlimited 500-mile upgrades.
If you weren’t targeted for this offer you can still get a free checked bag and priority boarding with American Airlines cards like these:
- CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® – Also comes with Admirals Club airport lounge access
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®
