Million Mile Secrets reader, John, commented:

I was curious – are there no more debit card rewards programs out there or do you not really focus on those since the points you collect from credit card rewards are just that much better?

Thanks for your question, John!

Yes, there are still debit cards that will reward you for your spending.

I Write a Lot About Earning Rewards With Credit Cards, but You Can Also Earn Miles, Points, & Cash Back With Debit Cards

Find out why I don’t often write about debit card rewards!

Are There Debit Cards That Offer Rewards?

Yes.

Here are a few examples.

1.   PayPal Business MasterCard Debit Card

I don’t have the PayPal Business MasterCard anymore.  But a couple of my friends still use it to earn 1% cash back on signature purchases such as paying rent with RadPad.

You Can Earn American Airlines Miles With the UFB Direct Airline Rewards Debit Card

You’ll get 1 American Airlines mile for every $3 spent for a maximum of 120,000 miles per year.

However, there are exclusions:

  • Purchases at supermarkets, super stores, grocery stores, wholesale stores, discount Stores, USPS, and financial or money transfer institutions are NOT eligible.
  • Purchases made using virtual wallets, funds transfer services, or other similar technology are NOT eligible

Why Don’t You Typically Read About These Cards on Million Mile Secrets?

While debit cards can be a nice way to earn miles, points, and cash back for purchases where credit cards aren’t accepted, I don’t write about them often.

That’s because you can earn more points, faster with credit card sign-up bonuses!

If You Can Handle Credit Responsibly, Credit Card Sign-Up Bonuses Are the #1 Way to Earn Big Travel!

For example, you can earn 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points by signing-up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and spending $4,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

You can redeem those points for:

You’d have to spend $50,000 on the PayPal Business MasterCard debit card to earn $500 in cash back!

And while the Chase Disney Visa debit card can save you 10% to 15% on things like souvenirs and dining, you can save thousands on your flight and hotel stay with credit cards like the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card.

The UFB Direct Airline Rewards debit card earns 1 American Airlines mile for every $3 you spend.  But there are 3 credit cards that give you 2 American Airlines miles for every $1 you spend with American Airlines and 1 American Airlines mile for every $1 you spend everywhere else.

Plus, you can earn 50,000 American Airlines miles on each card when you complete the minimum spending.  That’s enough for 2 coach round-trip tickets anywhere in the continental US, Alaska, and Canada!

One American Airlines Credit Card Can Take You From the Couch to Exploring Coral Reefs in the Caribbean

Here are the major steps to earning lots of miles and points for travel:

  • Make a Travel Plan – It’s important to decide what kind of travel you’re working towards before signing-up for credit cards.  The Beginner’s Guide can help you get started.
  • Sign-up for Credit Cards With Great Sign-Up Bonuses – The Hot Deals page has all my latest recommendations.
  • Start Traveling! – Don’t use your miles and points as long term savings.  Award charts change and programs devalue.  So it’s better to use them quickly.

Bottom Line

There are still debit cards like the PayPal Business MasterCard, Chase Disney Visa, and UFB Direct Airline Rewards that give you miles, points, and cash back for your spending!

These cards can be good way to get rewarded for purchases where you can’t pay with a credit card.

But the quickest route to Big Travel with Small Money is earning credit card sign-up bonuses!

an ENORMOUS benefit of debit vs credit cards is the ~ $3 flat fee for paying taxes online vs ~ 2% fee using credit card. I racked up nearly 360k miles for $36 (12 tax pmts online via debit card x $30k max debit transaction @ $3 fee each) while Sun Trust had a Delta debit card (ended July 2015 as I recall) vs 360k * 2% = $7,200 – net savings of $7,164!!! That’s 6 round trip tickets to Europe on Delta (which I have enjoyed alot)!

Swamps every credit card by millionmiles.

Worth mentioning???

Paul, what bank other than Suntrust you mention in the mileage post are you using?

Bank of Hawaii debit card earns Hawaiian miles(Hawaiian air) 1mile per $2 spent, if you live in Hawaii like me.

Don’t Chase debit cards earn those coveted UR points?

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Target debit card. 5% cash back on all purchases.

What is the best debut card to use for large tax payments ($100k +)? Thanks!
