Rocketmiles is a hotel booking site that rewards you with miles and rebates when you reserve a room.  And last week, they added AMEX Membership Rewards as their newest points partner!

That means you can earn 1,000s of extra AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book a hotel through Rocketmiles.

While it sounds incredible, there are things to watch out for before you arrange a stay.

Rocketmiles Added AMEX Membership Rewards as the Newest Way to Earn Points for Hotel Stays

I’ll explain how it works!

Since we first wrote about Rocketmiles, they’ve grown to include 60+ partners to reward you with points, miles, or rebates when you use their site to book a hotel room.

And now you can earn flexible AMEX Membership Rewards points with each hotel booking!  While the amount of points you’ll earn varies by hotel, it’s usually several thousand, which can be worthwhile in the right situation.

You’ll Typically Earn Thousands of Points for a Hotel Stay With Rocketmiles

AMEX Membership Rewards points are valuable because you can transfer them directly to over a dozen airline partners for award tickets.

I’m always excited about new ways to earn points, so this is great news!

Should You Book Your Hotel Stays Through Rocketmiles?

Before you shift all your hotel spending to Rocketmiles, always make sure you’re getting the best deal.

For example, when I checked, I found a room at Swissotel Chicago for $189 a night, at a non-refundable rate.

I Can Get a Flexible Rate Booking Directly, in This Example

I found the same price on the hotel’s site, which is a good sign.  But I also noticed I could get a fully flexible rate for the same amount.

I checked a couple other hotels, and this wasn’t always the case.  Sometimes you’ll find the same price and room rates on the Rocketmiles site.  But in certain cases, it’s better to book directly to have the option to cancel.  That’s important if you think your travel plans might change.

That said, I also found Rocketmiles sometimes had lower rates, and sometimes the same cancellation policies.  So if you can get a better deal AND earn bonus points on top of that, you might consider booking your stay through them.

Keep These Caveats in Mind

When you book through a third-party website, hotels will usually NOT let you earn loyalty program points or recognize your elite status.

So if that’s important to you, you should always book your stays directly.

You Won’t Get Elite Status Perks If You Book Through Rocketmiles.  But Other Times, It Might Be Worthwhile

You might use Rocketmiles if you’re:

  • Staying at an independent or boutique hotel that doesn’t have a loyalty program
  • Interested in earning AMEX Membership Rewards points instead of hotel points
  • Booking for another person who doesn’t have elite status
  • Saving enough money through Rocketmiles to justify skipping the hotel points and perks

And again, always check to make sure you’re getting the best possible rate and booking terms.  If it works out, you could snag a good deal and a heap of points!

You Must Use an AMEX Membership Rewards Card to Pay

Rocketmiles says:

Additional points available to US American Express Card Members with a Card enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program only.  Card Members must use an Eligible Card Account at checkout and complete their hotel stay to receive the additional points.

The card you use to pay must be one that earns AMEX Membership Rewards points, like the:

  • American Express® Gold Card
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express

Bottom Line

You can earn bonus AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book hotel rooms through Rocketmiles and pay with a card that earns those points.

It can be a good deal if you find a cheaper rate, or an offer to earn a big amount of extra points.  But remember, you won’t earn hotel loyalty points or get elite status perks.

Still, if you’re booking an independent hotel or don’t have elite status, you can do well to book stays this way.

If you’ve booked with Rocketmiles before, how was your experience?
