Lufthansa is a Star Alliance member, so you can use Lufthansa miles to book flights on United Airlines (or any other Star Alliance airline).

Note:  You can NOT combine your Lufthansa miles with United Airlines miles to book an award ticket!

The Lufthansa Star Alliance award chart shows you the number of miles required for award flights.  Or you can use the Mileage Calculator to check how many miles you need.

50,000 Lufthansa miles is enough for 2 round-trip coach award flights to anywhere within the continental US or Alaska on partner United Airlines.

Note:   The award chart shows round-trip partner flights in North America as 30,000 Lufthansa miles round-trip.  But if your flight is entirely within the US (except Hawaii), the price is 25,000 Lufthansa miles round-trip.

See my post about redeeming Lufthansa miles to learn about their other award chart quirks!

I Had a Great Time Visiting Kauai. And You Can Use Lufthansa Miles to Get to Hawaii, Too!

40,000 Lufthansa miles is enough for a round-trip, low-level award flight from the US Mainland to Hawaii on United Airlines.  You will NOT pay fuel surcharges using Lufthansa miles on United Airlines within the US.

Lufthansa also has monthly Mileage Bargains that allow you to book certain routes at a discounted rate – sometimes almost half off!

Pay Nearly 50% Fewer Miles With Lufthansa Mileage Bargains. You Can Fly Round-Trip to Europe in Business Class This Month for 55,000 Lufthansa Miles!

This month, for example, there are 178 routes on sale from lots of US cities to Europe.  You can fly round-trip in Business Class to Europe for 55,000 Lufthansa miles!

Remember, you’ll have at least 55,000 Lufthansa miles after you complete the minimum spending requirements.  Considering Business Class flights can cost thousands of dollars, this can be an incredible deal.

Lufthansa and many of its European airline partners have fuel surcharges, even on award flights.  But here’s how to avoid them!

Should You Sign-Up?

The Barclaycard Miles & More Premier World Elite MasterCard can be a great deal for lots of folks.  If you already have cards with other banks, you might consider this offer if you don’t already have many cards with Barclaycard.

The regular offer on this card is 35,000 Lufthansa miles.  And it hasn’t been this high since Summer 2015.  So if you’ve been considering this card, now is a great time to apply!

But if you’re new to miles & points, there are other cards I recommend over this one.

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus might be a better choice for folks who want flexibility or who aren’t sure of their travel plans.

Keep in mind Barclaycard typically only allows folks to sign-up for 1 to 2 of their cards per year.

Bottom Line

The sign-up bonus on the Barclaycard Miles & More Premier World Elite MasterCard has increased to a total of 50,000 Lufthansa miles after meeting minimum spending requirements.

The sign-up bonus on this card is usually 35,000 Lufthansa miles, so this is a great deal!

You can use Lufthansa miles to fly on Lufthansa or their Star Alliance partner airlines, like United Airlines.  50,000 Lufthansa miles is enough for 2 round-trip coach award seats within the mainland US or Alaska.  And enough for a round-trip coach flight to Hawaii!

Keep an eye on monthly Mileage Bargains.  Because if you can find a route that works with your travel plans, it can be a fantastic deal.

This isn’t our link, but we always tell you about the best offers even if they don’t earn a commission!

  1. Would love to get this card, but once again Iowa residents are not able to apply. I guess Iowa must have some issues with Barclay Bank.

About This Offer: You must be at least 18 years of age. This offer is available only to applicants who are residents of the United States, with the exception of Iowa, Puerto Rico and the US territories,

  2. Do you know the expiration rules for miles with miles and more? I currently have 55k miles form a prev card, but i read thats its a hard stop meaning the miles dont renew even if have activity. I emailed them and they made me even more confused as they said 25k of my miles would expire on one day, and the other 30k would expire 6 months later…. I didnt know if i get this card if they would all be renewed.

  3. I still don’t get the issue with Iowa either. I have several Barclaycard accounts and never understood why some others have Iowa excluded. I finally got a US Airways card through an inflight handout last year that did not have the exclusion. It makes it harder for us that live in Iowa, but not necessarily impossible. I have a Lufthansa flight scheduled for September so maybe I can find a non-excluded application that way. I have never asked the phone reps if the card can be received and not the bonus, or what the issue is, but I may call and see if they can shed some light on this.

  4. I was curious about this Iowa issue (though i don’t live in Iowa). So i did some searching and found this post on Doctor of Credit from 2 years agohttp://www.doctorofcredit.com/why-are-some-credit-card-offers-not-available-to-residents-of-iowa/ that provides very brief explanation.

Perhaps Million Miles Secrets might want to do its own Post and maybe provide more details than this 2 year old post.

  5. there were reports that one could get this card and bonus more than once, at the same time. Is that dead?

  6. Do you when this would expire?

  7. @Trup, I had the same exact experience. I contacted Lufthansa, Miles and More and Barclays, and couldn’t get a straight answer. They say that using the credit card can keep the miles active, but it may not apply to miles you have already accumulated, or something like that. I also have 55K from a card I picked up in 2014. Those miles are due to expire sometime in 2017 if I cannot find a way to keep them active. I will be booking a trip to Europe this fall for next year, so I am going to make sure I use these miles as they are the only miles I have that might expire. I wish I could tell you more.

I did just get approved for the new card, so I’ll have 55K more coming my way 🙂

  9. @David @ScottS – Bummer! It’s no fun to miss out on a good deal because of where you live!

    @Trup @Diotallevi – Here’s my post on Lufthansa miles:

    http://millionmilesecrets.com/2013/05/23/lufthansa-award/

Your miles will also NOT expire if you:

Have the Barclaycard Lufthansa Credit Card AND
Make at least 1 purchase a month AND
Have had the Lufthansa card for at least 3 months

The easiest way to keep your miles active beyond 3 years is to set a small recurring purchase (Netflix etc.) on your Barclaycard Lufthansa card.

@Brian – Thank you for sharing that!

@Damon – I’m not sure. If you already have the card, you could ask Barclaycard if you can get another one.

@JMC – I don’t know when this offer will expire. If you’re interested, I’d try to apply soon though!

  10. @brian, thanks for the link. Interesting information. Still odd that some cards have an issue and some don’t.
