I’ll explain!

What’s the Deal?

I’ve written about Marriott’s 7-night Hotel + Air packages.  You can find more details on the Marriott website.

But you can also book Hotel + Air packages for 5-night stays.  And pay fewer points!

This perk is supposed to be for Marriott Vacation Club owners only, but Frequent Miler discovered elite status holders can book them also.  And according to The Points Guy, anyone can book these packages.

You won’t find the information on Marriott’s website, but here are the prices:

Like to Fly? You Can Earn Miles with 14 Airlines Along With Your Award Stay at Marriott Hotels

Along with the award nights at Marriott hotels, you’ll also get miles or points transferred to your frequent flyer account at a 1:1 ratio.  The participating airlines are:

  • Aeromexico
  • Air Canada
  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Copa Airlines
  • Delta
  • Frontier Airlines
  • GOL
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Iberia
  • Southwest
  • United Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

Note:   You’ll get 10% more miles when you redeem Marriott points for a Hotel + Air package with United Airlines.

To book, call Marriott reservations at 888-236-2427.  And ask specifically for a 5-night package.

Why This Is a Great Deal

When you redeem your Marriott points for a Hotel + Air package, you get a certificate to stay at the hotel category of your choice, valid for 1 year.  So you do NOT have to choose your hotel right away.

Save Points And Earn The Southwest Companion Pass With Marriott 5 Night Hotel Air Packages

5-Night Packages Are Much More Convenient for Most Folks. And the Award Certificates and Miles Are Very Flexible – So You Don’t Have to Feel Like You’re Stuck!

And, you can buy a package at the lowest rate.  And then pay more points to stay at a higher category hotel later, if you decide you want to stay at a different hotel.

Keep in mind your stay must be 5 consecutive nights at the same hotel.  Having the option to stay 5 nights, instead of 7, is a lot more convenient for many folks.

So once you have the hotel certificates and the airline miles, you can mix-and-match hotels and award seats until you find a trip that works for you!

Get a Special Perk With Southwest

When you redeem your Marriott points for a Southwest Hotel + Air package, the Southwest points you receive DO count toward the Southwest Companion Pass.

If you redeem 215,000 Marriott points, you’ll get a certificate for 5 nights at a Marriott Category 1 through 5 hotel, and 100,000 Southwest points.

Typically, you’ll receive the Southwest points shortly after redeeming your Marriott points for a Hotel + Air package.

You need to earn 110,000 qualifying Southwest points per calendar year to get the Companion Pass.  So this gets you most of the way there!

LUV to Fly Southwest? The Points You’ll Get With Marriott’s Hotel + Air Packages Count Toward the Southwest Companion Pass!

And if you redeem 235,000 Marriott points, you’ll get 5 nights at a Marriott Category 1 through 5 hotel plus 120,000 Southwest Points.  That’s more than enough to earn the Companion Pass!

I’ve written a lot about the Southwest Companion Pass because it’s the best deal in domestic travel.  And it’s 1 of the easiest awards to book.

Emily and I love Southwest because you get 2 free checked bags on every flight.  And you’ll never pay change or cancellation fees!

Earn More Marriott Points

There are terrific offers on the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier (personal and small business) cards right now.

With the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier personal card, you’ll earn 80,000 Marriott points after spending $3,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of account opening.

And an extra 7,500 Marriott points when you add an authorized user who makes a purchase in the 1st 3 months of account opening.  The $85 annual fee is NOT waived the 1st year.

And with the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier small business card, you can earn 80,000 Marriott points when you spend $3,000 on purchases within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.  The $99 annual fee is NOT waived the 1st year.

Save Points And Earn The Southwest Companion Pass With Marriott 5 Night Hotel Air Packages

A Couple Could Apply for 3 Chase Marriott Cards, and Have Enough Marriott Points for the Southwest Companion Pass! And Get a 5-Night Stay in New Orleans for Free!

So if you and a partner both opened a Chase Marriott Rewards Premier card and met the minimum spending requirements, you’d have 160,000 Marriott points in total.

And if both of you add an authorized user who makes a purchase within the 1st 3 months of opening your account, you’d each earn another 7,500 Marriott points (15,000 Marriott points total).

And if 1 of you added the Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Small Business card and earned the 80,000 point sign-on bonus, you’d have a combined total of 255,000 Marriott points (160,000 + 15,000 + 80,000).

Note:  Under Marriott’s new rules, you can transfer up to 50,000 Marriott points per year to a friend or family member.  But once per year, you can exceed the 50,000 point maximum only for a specific award redemption.  Marriott says:

Immediately prior to Reward Redemption and only once per calendar year, a Member may authorize the transfer of the necessary number of Points into the Rewards Program account of a friend or family member, in order to qualify for a specific Reward.  This transfer may exceed the 50,000 Point maximum per calendar year.

That would be more than enough to earn a Southwest Companion Pass through Marriott’s Hotel + Air packages!  Plus, you could get 5 nights at a Marriott Category 6 hotel, like the AC Hotel New Orleans Bourbon / French Quarter Area.

Transfer From Chase Ultimate Rewards

Anyone with a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold card can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott.  Although Marriott is NOT my favorite transfer partner, it can be useful if you’re just short of the award stay you want.

I prefer to transfer my Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United Airlines and Hyatt.  I like the Hyatt award chart and flying international Business and First Class on United Airlines and their partners.

Chase Will Soon Have New Application Rules

Keep in mind, Chase has been tightening their credit card application policies.  And in April 2016, you may not be able to get ANY Chase cards if you’ve opened ~5+ credit cards in the previous 24 months.

You might consider applying for 1 (or more) of the Chase Marriott cards if you want to redeem points for a 5-night Hotel + Air package before the new rules go into effect.  And remember, Marriott and Starwood will merge later this year to create the world’s largest hotel chain.

Or you might consider these other Chase cards.  It depends on your travel goals!

Bottom Line

Marriott’s Hotel + Air packages are a fantastic way to stretch your Marriott points further.  Marriott only lists 7-night packages on their website.

But you can also book Hotel + Air packages for 5-night stays to save points!

Even better, the points you’ll get with a Southwest Hotel + Air package count toward the Southwest Companion Pass.  Call Marriott at 888-236-2427 to book a 5-night Hotel + Air package.

If you and a partner opened a combination of 3 Chase Marriott Rewards (personal and small business) cards, you’d have more than enough points to earn the Southwest Companion Pass.

For example, 5 nights at a Marriott Category 6 hotel and 120,000 Southwest points cost 250,000 Marriott points.

But keep in mind, Chase is tightening their application rules starting April 2016.  Depending on your travel goals, you might consider another Chase card instead.

That said, this is a fantastic way to get free award stays and to earn the Southwest Companion Pass – the best deal in domestic travel!

  1. The bounce currently is 80k+7.5k+ 3k(spend). Can I have my friend transfer me 50k, so that my wife and I can use a total of 230k (90k+90k+50k) for the travel package, IN THE SAME YEAR?

  2. Daraius, Has this been proven to work for everyone? This used to be just for the Marriott Vacation Club owners. 5 nights in one hotel is about as much as we can take so this would be great.

  3. @JoJoLu – That should work. Marriott updated their rules this year to allow you to transfer up to 50,000 Marriott points to any other member each calendar year:

    http://millionmilesecrets.com/2015/10/13/how-new-marriott-changes-can-get-you-big-travel/

And you can always share your points with a spouse or domestic partner who lives at the same address.

@Juno – You might have luck if you get an agent who’s willing to book it for you. And having elite status seems to help, too. According to this post, anyone can book the 5-night Hotel + Air packages:

    http://thepointsguy.com/2016/02/marriott-5-night-packages/

I haven’t tried it myself, but it seems some folks have been able to. Let us know how it turns out for you!

  4. Darius, please clarify “When you redeem your Marriott points for a Southwest Hotel + Air package, the Southwest points you receive DO count toward the Southwest Companion Pass.

How do you redeem Marriott points for a Southwest Hotel + Air package on the Marriott site or the SW site?

  5. @Jill – To redeem Marriott points for a Hotel + Air package, you must call Marriott at 888-236-2427. They’ll be able to help you book.

You can use the Southwest points to book any flight you find on the Southwest website after they post to your account.

    Hope that helps!

  6. Hi Darius,

Is it alright to apply for both cards in the same day? Just want to make sure I won’t have any issues getting approved.

    Thanks,
    Ilya

  7. I just tried to book a 5 night stay and was denied. I was told it is only for Marriott Vacation Club owners. I have platinum status and was very disappointed (not with y’all of course).

  8. @Ilya – It’s up to Chase how much credit they’re willing to extend to you. But you can try if you have a strong credit history.

@Matt – Did you try to speak with a different representative? Sometimes you’ll have luck by hanging up and calling to speak with someone else.

  9. Darius,
As my SW RR account currently has 10k pts, will a redemption of 215K Marriott pts (100K SW pts) be enough for a CP? TIA

  10. Spoke to 6 different reps at different times and ask for manager verification – ALL DENIED booking 5-day package for non-club owners.
So it is not working described by you, points guy and frequent miler.

  11. Any updates on if this deal is dead or not?

  12. Just called to book this package & was told the 5 night package is for Timeshare owners only

  13. I have a companion that is expiring on December, 2016. I applied to a Southwest card and got the 50k miles for the card plus with the other expenses I’m still short 48k miles for the companion for next year. I was planning to get a Marriott hotel and package to complete the miles since Chase is not going to approve me another card due to the 5/24 rule. I want to time it so I can get the companion for 2017-2019 instead of one year. When do I need to buy the package in order for this to occur?

    • I am wondering if you heard back on this, as I’m in the same boat. Do I need to wait til Jan 1 to purchase the package (and then immediately make 10K extra spend on SW card) to get the CP for 2017-2018? Also, as a totally separate question that I can’t seem to find the answer to, how long does one have to use the 100K SW points? Can these be used over time (1-2 years) and spread out over as many trips as I choose? How many people have reported success at getting the 12 month Marriott certificate extended?
