I’ve heard Discover agents are super helpful!  A friend once accidentally missed a payment (very rare) and caught it a few days later.  When he called to pay in full, he asked Discover to waive the late fee, and they did so with no problem!

American Express has historically been the top-ranked credit card issuer in the US.  Their customer service is top-notch, and it’s easy to get an agent on the phone (or via online chat or secure message).

AMEX cardholders get lots of extra perks, like AMEX Offers and complimentary ShopRunner membership (discounts and free shipping).

Plus, some AMEX cards, like the American Express Platinum, offer outstanding purchase protection, return protection, and extended warranty benefits.

That’s because it’s got a great sign-up bonus and earns bonus points on categories like travel and dining.  And you can transfer the points you earn to terrific airline and hotel partners like Southwest, United Airlines, and Hyatt.

But I like the Chase Sapphire Preferred for another reason.  When you call the number on the back of your card (any time 24/7), a real person answers the phone!

You don’t have to navigate a maze of menu options or wait on hold for a long time.  In fact, when I have an issue with any of my Chase accounts, I’ll call the Chase Sapphire Preferred number and ask to be transferred!

In my experience, Chase has been very good with matching increased sign-up bonuses and when I’ve had to dispute a charge.  And it’s easy to send them a secure message online.

Plus, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card comes with other great perks, like primary car rental insurance and trip delay reimbursement.

Folks weren’t happy when Barclaycard made changes to redeeming miles earned from the Barclaycard Arrival Plus this year.

But it’s still a good card because it has a 40,000 mile sign-up bonus (worth ~$400 in travel purchases of $100+) after you complete the minimum spending.  And the $89 annual fee is waived for the 1st year.

I like Barclaycard because their website is easy to navigate.  And you can easily redeem miles right from your online account.

In my experience, their customer service agents are very responsive (either by phone or online).  And folks have had issues resolved quickly with their accounts.  For example:

  • A buddy of mine accidentally missed a payment while he was traveling.  He sent Barclaycard a secure message and they offered to waive the late fee without him having to ask!
  • Others report calling to cancel their Arrival card – and the agent immediately offered to waive the annual fee for another year.
  • Another friend was charged twice in error for a hotel stay and the hotel refused to fix the mistake.  A quick call and email to Barclaycard customer service resolved the situation within a couple of days.

Many Folks Report Barclays Customer Service Representatives Are Helpful and Quick to Resolve Issues

I also like that the Barclaycard website makes it easy to add authorized users, see your FICO score, and send a secure message.

Barclaycard normally charges ~$30 to ship a new card overnight.  But some have reported they’ll waive the charge for the Barclaycard Arrival Plus.

Bottom Line

Some cards are better than others!  And it’s not just about miles and points.

My favorite cards offer excellent customer service.  It’s nice to know that if there’s an issue with your account or a fraudulent charge, it’s easier with some cards to contact a customer service representative.

And other cards provide extra perks, like extended warranty, price protection, or return protection on your purchases.

    Fun fact: half the time, I haven’t even needed to ask to be transferred! I figured this out independently a while ago, that the Sapphire Preferred phone line not only guaranteed that you’d get a person on the line within a minute, but also seems to be staffed with all of Chase’s best support representatives, who have been granted the power to actually fix your problems… half the time, that extends well beyond their direct purview (yes, the rest of the time, they will happily redirect you to the right place, which is still way nicer than navigating phone menus and first-level reps.)

    Example: the Southwest card was my original points card back in the day, but we swapped it out a few years ago for the better Sapphire when we found out about it; when you informed us we could reacquire it for the signup bonus with the rules change, we did that. When it came time to re-cancel it last month, I called the Sapphire line. I was expecting, if not a fight, at least some questioning as to why I opened two Southwest cards at the same time and then cancelled them about 10 months later, but nope: Sapphire rep herself, with no issue or complaint, happily closed both the cards immediately and moved all but ~500$ of the credit limit from both cards back onto the Sapphire, and was apologetic the system wouldn’t let her move the last 500$ (I was like, seriously, that is great, you do not have to apologize.) Just soooo different from any service you’d get from BoA, or even really service you’d get from other Chase lines. I’ve told people it’s practically worth the annual 100 bucks just for that.

  2. Barclay Arrival – good customer service? Surely you jest. I agree that their website is excellent. And it’s true that their agents are friendly. However said agents are laughably incompetent/untrained. CSRs seem eager to please, but typically have no idea what they are talking about. 3 phone calls will get 3 completely different answers. A few agents are empowered to actually fix problems, but most of them have to escalate even the simplest requests. Questions asked in their online Discussion forum typically get responses like, “We are reaching out to our team to get an answer to that question” (with no followup for weeks or months, if ever).

    Right now everybody is angry about the recent devaluations. But in 2014 they UPGRADED the card and botched the rollout so thoroughly that card holders ended up being furious, which is quite a trick. As with the recent devaluation, information was poorly communicated and when people called to find out when/if they were getting the upgrade they were given wildly different stories. Some were told that everyone was getting it but nobody knew when, some were told that the upgrade was targeted to only “the best customers,” and some were actually told that the only way to get the new chipped card was to cancel their current card and apply again (thus losing all their points). Unbelievable.

  3. I’ve always been impressed when dealing with American Express . They are the most organized , the most competent I have experienced . In fairness I don’t have Discover so I can not rate them . Unfortunately I am maxed out with Amex or I would sign up for a couple more cards .
    Also in fairness , none of the others have been a great problem . Just small issues that took a little longer to resolve . All in all , I can live with it !

  4. Best phone/CSR support I have gotten in 2015 has come from the Ritz Carlton Rewards card dedicated line. It will also work for other Chase cards in your portfolio. A live person answers on the first ring, so no phone tree.

  5. I’d echo Sharon’s sentiments. Thumbs down on Barclay. I don’t think it’s customer service is top 20.

    A few months back I got something we’ve all experienced from a rep after telling them, “Well the last rep said x,y,z” I was met with, “well, that was wrong, do you know who you spoke with?” Because 99% percent of people never keep track of that or write it down. But I DO! And I said so. I mentioned I even record the calls. Hey they can do it, why shouldn’t we?

    I was told it was against Barclay policy, that customers were not allowed to record calls and she would hang up on me unless I started I would stop recording the calls. She said it was in the terms and conditions.

    I knew full well she was lying or misinformed. Many supervisors later, and some emails and tweets, and after waiting MONTHS. simply asking what the policy was I finally got an answer. There was (of course) nothing in the terms that prevented customers from recording the calls. The rep has simply lied and tried to bluff me and I called her out on it.

    Barclay is a major loser on the customer service front.

    No way.
    Waived fees? Any initiative from Brcls CSR?
    Looks like I live in a different universe where Barclays CSR agents are the rudest among almost all I’ve ever encountered, they never ever waive any fees and will cut your throat for $25 even if you are their loyal client for several years and they will never explain you truthfully that you were firmly blacklisted and should not bother applying…
    Sorry, that was kind of my personal experience…

  7. Wow! Discover tops in anything?? I am shocked and in total disagreement. The customer service agents we have dealt with have been downright rude. Granted our most recent encounters have been related to my mother-in-law’s excessive consumer deft with Discover but our attempts to get a reduced interest rate, payment plan etc., were met with total rudeness, disinterest and lack of cooperation. I also despise there marketing practices….I or a family member receive a marketing mailing from Discover at least once a week. I would never own a Discover Card.
