Emily and I don’t have to buy an airline lounge membership because we have credit cards, like the American Express Platinum and Mercedes-Benz Platinum card that give us airport lounge access.

American Express recently increased the sign-up bonus for Personal version of the Platinum card to 40,000 points after spending $3,000 within 3 months.  As always, terms and restrictions apply.

American Express also recently increased the sign-up bonus for the business version of the Platinum card to 40,000 points after spending $5,000 within 3 months.

The sign-up bonus for the Mercedes-Benz Platinum card is 50,000 points after spending $3,000 within 3 months.

Other benefits of the Business Platinum card, the Platinum card, and the American Express Mercedes-Benz Platinum card include:

The $450 annual fee (Platinum personal and business card) and $475 annual fee (Mercedes-Benz Platinum card) are NOT waived.  But the $200 yearly airline credit makes the annual fee effectively $250 and $275.

One of the perks of our American Express Platinum cards is Priority Pass membership.  You get free access to Priority Pass lounges with a valid ticket for same day travel AND your Priority Pass card.  The Priority Pass card is a separate card, different from your American Express Platinum card.

America Express Priority Pass

Why Pay for Lounge Access If You Don’t Have To?

You can use any Priority Pass lounge location worldwide regardless of which airline or if you’re flying on a cheap ticket.  So even if you’re using your Southwest Companion Pass, you can visit a Priority Pass lounge.

Your partner and children under the age of 21, or 2 traveling companions can be your guests in the lounge.  But you pay $27 per person for each guest.  Usually children under 2 years are free.

There are over 600 Priority Pass lounges, mostly international.  So you might not get a lot out of your Priority Pass if you don’t travel internationally or fly through 1 of the 32 US airports that have a Priority Pass lounge.  And some of these lounges are in the international terminal, so you may not be able to access them if you’re traveling domestically.

Here are some of the US airports that have a Priority Pass lounge:

  • Atlanta
  • Austin
  • Baltimore
  • Chicago (ORD)
  • Cleveland
  • Houston (IAH)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Miami (MIA)
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul
  • New York Area (JFK, EWR, LGA)
  • Orange County
  • Orlando International (MCO) and Orlando Sanford (SFB)
  • Philadelphia
  • Phoenix
  • Portland
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco (SFO)
  • San Jose
  • Washington, DC (IAD, DCA)

Here is the full list of Priority Pass lounges along with their restrictions.

Your Golden Ticket To Free Peace & Quiet in the Airport

Who Can’t Register for Priority Pass Online

You can add additional card holders to your Business Platinum card, Platinum card, and American Express Mercedes-Benz Platinum cards and they get Priority Pass access.

Adding an additional card holder to the Business Platinum card costs $300 per card!

However, it costs $175 to add up to 3 additional card holders to personal platinum cards.  And each additional user can get their own Priority Pass card (and Global Entry reimbursement).  So it could be worth adding your family members as additional card holders because you pay $175 whether you add 1 or 3 additional users.

Authorized users on your Platinum cards can also sign-up, but they have to call 800-525-3355 (Mercedes-Benz Platinum and Platinum personal) or 800-492-8468 (Business Platinum card).

Authorized Users Can’t Enroll for Priority Pass Online

Bottom Line

You get a free Priority Pass (airport lounge) membership when you have an American Express Mercedes-Benz Platinum card, a Platinum card, or a Business Platinum card.

Most of the Priority Pass lounges are international, but there are 32 airports in the US that have a Priority Pass lounge.

So if you want to relax before your flight, you can access the lounge with a valid boarding pass and Priority Pass card.  But you have to enroll in Priority Pass and get a Priority Pass card BEFORE you enter the lounge!

You can enroll in Priority Pass online or over the phone.

And authorized users on your Platinum cards can get their own Priority Pass membership, but they have to call.

  1. Can you still use your Priority Pass without incurring any fee after your Platinum card is cancelled?

  2. DFW has a Priority Pass lounge called ‘The Club at DFW’ in Terminal D among all the other lounges near gate D22 I believe.

  3. A lot of lounges aren’t accepting Priority Pass if you received your membership through a financial institution.

  4. It looks like most of the limited list in the US expressly prohibit priority pass members who receive their membership through a financial institution. Has this been your experience in places like Austin, Atlanta, Philadelphia, etc?

  5. I have the same question as Dave, specifically with Austin 🙂

  6. Help……Flying into YYZ this month on AC booking class X, then on to MUC on LH booking class O. What lounge options do I have? I have Platinum and Priority Pass. Will either get me into the AC lounge? I will be traveling with family total of 3 passengers. 10 hour layover, ugh……

  7. @Dave & @Jennifer – no Priority Pass access at Austin Bergstrom if membership is through financial institution. Here’s the info from the Priority Pass list of lounges:

    Lounge United Club
Location Airside – Mezzanine Level, across from Gate 13.

age or older – Premium selection of alcoholic drinks are subject to payment – Dress code
    applicable – Non-smoking.
Note: Members holding a Priority Pass Select membership card and Priority Pass cardholders
in the U.S. that receive their membership through a U.S. financial institution will not be allowed
    access to this Lounge.

  8. lee: It doesn’t seem so. I cancelled my Amex Platinum a few days ago and when I try to log in to prioritypass.com I am unable to log in with the message “You are unable to login as your account is not valid.”

  9. Prince Johnson

The Priority Pass you get from AMEX sucks. You can’t get into any of the United Clubs. You listed Orange County but you can’t get into that with this card. The card you get is the SELECT card meaning only a few lounges. Don’t even try to get into any of the United Clubs. They won’t let you in.

  10. How is PriorityPass Select different from The Lounge Club membership that comes with some Chase cards?

  11. You list Denver (United) as a Priority Pass site, and it is, if you have the Priority Pass Normal membership. The one that is with Amex Platinum is the Priority Pass Select, and does not work at United in Denver. It also doesn’t work at Newark United either.

Bottom line is the Amex Platinum linked free Priority Pass (Select) does not work at United Clubs.

  12. Perhaps there are different classes of Priority Pass membership but when I had a Priority Pass card several years ago, there was still a $27 charge to use the lounge. The charge applied to me as the cardholder even if I had no guest with me. A guest cost me an additional $27, so my question is, given the earlier comments, assuming that the domestic Priority Pass lounge even accepted the card, is it really free of any other charges for me traveling alone?

The priority pass “select” that is given with amex business is effectively useless. i’ve yet to find a lounge where i can use it. it’s basically useless in the USA. it’s priority passes orphan card that provides zero utility. you might as well toss it as carry it.

  18. You said there’s a Priority Pass Lounge in San Antonio, do you know where is located?

  19. @Trinita – It looks like the San Antonio lounge has closed since this post went up. 🙁
