The bonus on The Business Platinum Card® from American Express OPEN has increased to 40,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 within 3 months.

Get 40,000 Points After Completing the Minimum Spending on The Business Platinum Card From American Express OPEN.  You Can Use the Points to Travel to Places Like Berlin When You Transfer the Points to Airline Partners.

The previous bonus was only 25,000 points after spending $5,000 within 3 months.

American Express also recently increased the sign-up bonus for Personal version of the Platinum card to 40,000 points after spending $3,000 within 3 months.

One advantage of The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN over the regular Platinum is that you get 30% of your points back when you use the “Pay With Points” feature to book airfare on your selected airline through American Express.

However, adding an additional card holder to The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN costs $300 per card!  In comparison, it costs only $175 to add up to 3 additional card holders to personal platinum cards.

The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN’s other benefits include:

  • Get up to $200 in airline credits per calendar year on select airlines (you have to enroll and select a qualifying airline each year)
  • Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
  • NO foreign transaction fees
  • TSA PreCheck OR Global Entry statement credit
  • Terms and limitations apply

The $450 annual fee is NOT waived.  But the $200 credit makes the annual fee effectively $250.

Here is the official description of the card:

How Can I Use American Express Points?

There are many ways to use American Express Membership Rewards points.

For example, you can use 40,000 points to get $400 in gift cards.  You can also transfer American Express points to select airline and hotel partners.

Note:   Only “premium” American Express cards like The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN allow you to transfer points.  I’ve written about which AMEX cards allow you to transfer your Membership Rewards points to airlines and hotels.

Bottom Line

It’s nice to see the sign-up bonus on The Business Platinum Card from American Express OPEN increase to 40,000 points when you spend $5,000 within 3 months.  But I would prefer to see an increase to 50,000 points to match the Chase Ink Plus and (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold.

You can transfer American Express points to select airline and hotel partners or get $400 in gift cards.

That said, you could get more Membership Rewards points with the personal The Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz, which has a 50,000 point sign-up bonus when you spend $3,000 within 3 months.

Just signing up now – they have been spamming me for months – just got approved. Instead of an additional $300 platinum card for employees the also have a gold card for $75 that offers only extended auto (tow) protection and a green card ($0) that doesn’t include any offers.

However all card count as points to meet that minimum spend. So if you have one platinum card, one gold and 3 green card and each spend $1000 in the first 3 months you meet that spend.

Additional note, point accrual starts the minute they charge that $450 NOT when you receive the card and activate it.

SO if the card doesn’t arrive in 3 business days call the number on the card ASAP so you do not miss out on days to spend!

I’d like to try to purchase American Airlines gift cards to see if I can get my $200 card statement credit that way. Can I choose Virtual Gift Cards to avoid the delivery charges??? Also, should I buy them one at a time to better my chances of getting the statement credit?

@Don – Ordering a virtual card will avoid the delivery fee. I’d buy them in small denominations, but your experience could be different.

Can you explain “different product” as it relates to applying for various credit cards?

My husband just got a 100k offer for the business platinum a couple of days ago. Not pulling the trigger – I promised him no new credit cards for awhile. It’s the second 100k AmEx offer he’s gotten since last summer, so hoping another one will come around again when we’re ready to do another round.

@Julie – They charge an excise fee for transfers to US programs, which is capped.

@Julie S – I believe they will start limiting the bonus from April 1, 2014.

@ jeremy – Business and personal are considered different cards so that should be possible.

I got a 50k offer for the Business Gold in the mail in early December. Mid December, they sent me a 75k offer for the Gold (about 2 weeks later). A week alter, I got a 100k offer for Platinum. I applied for both and ended up getting 175k + the initial 6k for spend.

Sadly, I couldn’t use them for travel, as I really needed cash. I cashed the points out for about $4.5k. It probably helped that I have a business (why I got the offers).
