Each quarter, the Chase Freedom has rotating 5X bonus categories (5% cash back).  This quarter you’ll earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points at department stores, wholesale clubs (like Sam’s Club), and drug stores.

But you must activate the bonus!  And December 14, 2016, is your last chance to register for this quarter’s bonus.  It runs through December 31, 2016.

Even if you activate now, you’ll earn 5X points for bonus category spending from October 1, 2016 onward.  I

Note:  Grocery purchases at stores like Walmart and Target do NOT qualify for 5X bonus points.

How Does the 5X Ultimate Rewards Points Bonus Work?

After activating the rotating category bonus, you’ll automatically earn 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (5% cash back) per $1 on up to $1,500 in combined spending in bonus categories each quarter.

That means you can earn up to 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($75 cash back) every 3 months.  So it’s possible to earn up to 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($300 cash back) each year (5X points X $1,500 X 4 quarters).

Why the Chase Freedom Is One of My Favorite Cards

I’ve kept the Chase Freedom in my wallet for a long time, because it has no annual fee and is a great way to earn lots of Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

And don’t forget, if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, Chase Sapphire ReserveChase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card, Chase Ink Plus (no longer available), or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available), you can move Chase Ultimate Rewards points earned from the Chase Freedom to one of those accounts.

And then transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to terrific travel partners like United AirlinesHyatt, and Southwest for Big Travel!

The Chase Freedom also comes with:

Just remember, Chase has changed their card application rules.  So if you’ve opened 5 or more credit cards in the past 24 months, it’s unlikely you’ll be approved for any Chase Ultimate Rewards points-earning cards, like the Chase Freedom.

Bottom Line

Today, December 14, 2016, is the last day you can activate the Chase Freedom’s 4th quarter bonus categories, which include department stores, wholesale clubs (like Sam’s Club), and drug stores.

You can earn up to 7,500 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points ($75 cash back) every 3 months by activating these categories!
