Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

As of August 26, 2018, AMEX and Chase have tighter application restrictions on their Marriott and Starwood cards.

These new rules make it MUCH harder for folks to open multiple Marriott and Starwood credit cards.  So if you’ve got your eye on any of these cards.  The rules are a bit complicated, but I’ll give you a reminder of them, and the credit cards they apply to.

A Slew of Application Rules for Marriott and Starwood Cards

Each card has its own unique set of restrictions.  Crazy, I know.  I’ve included some extremely helpful graphics so you can see at a glance what you’re eligible for:

If You’re Applying for Marriott Credit Cards

There are currently 4 cards that earn Marriott points:

And on August 23, 2018, the new Starwood Preferred Guest® Luxury Card launched.  The welcome offer is 75,000 Marriott points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account.

Before applying for any of these cards, keep in mind the following bank rules.

You can only earn the welcome bonus on an AMEX card once per lifetime.  Plus, you can only open 2 cards every 90 days, with 5 days between applications.

Meanwhile, you can only earn the bonus on a Chase Marriott card if it’s been 24 months since you last earned the bonus on that specific card and the card is closed.

The both the Chase Marriott Premier Plus card and the Chase Marriott Premier Business cards are affected by the Chase’s 5/24 rule.  The personal cards on this list will count toward your “5/24” status, while the business cards won’t.

Read this post for more details.

Bottom Line

It’s difficult and a little confusing to open multiple cards that earn Marriott points.  So plan your Marriott and Starwood card applications carefully.

I highly encourage you to read this post to help your strategy along.

Thanks for all your insight. If we already have all the cards, and since all SPG and Marriott rewards have merged (hence no longer 1:3 ratio?), which card should we use to maximize our reward benefits at a Starwood Prop? Marriott Prop?

Should we use the Amex card at all former Starwood props, and our Marriott card at all former Marriott props? Or will any of the cards get the equivalent amount of rewards at any Starwood/Marriott Prop?

Hope that question made sense.

Hi Ruchi – great questions. With the personal AMEX Starwood and Chase Marriott cards, the earning rate is now the same at all Marriott and Starwood hotels. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response! What about the business cards? Is it the same for those also?

I have personal and business for both AMEX SPG and Chase Marriott.

Kindly following up on previous question regarding the use of business cards over personal

Is there a higher incentiove to use the business card instead of the personal card at any of the Starwood/Marriott props?

Checking-in on this thread regarding any major differences in using business card vs personal card for either Amex/Chase at Starwood/Marriott props.

The destruction of the SPG benefits continues!

I think there’s still hope. I’ve had Starwood Platinum status for several years and will continue to try to keep my status with Marriott for the perks.

Hi! I’ve been a big fan of Million Mile Secrets for a while, my travel has been so much cheaper the past year.

Additionally, I would like to ask your permission to include Million Mile Secrets on a new website I am starting, The Bloggers Digest, which will be a curated aggregator.

I would put a headline and the first sentence or two of Million Mile Secrets posts, and a thumbnail if applicable, but that little package would link directly to your site for the reader to actually read the post.

Please reply with your permission or any questions you may have. Thanks!

Thank you for your feedback! Sure, we appreciate if you link back to our site. Thank you!

Thank you!
