IHG has a ton of promotions going on right now, so this is a great time to double dip if you are looking at staying at one of their many hotels.  They just announced the IHG Annual Sale.  It promises “at least” 20% off at participating hotels.  In my experience, these deals were harder to find than I would have hoped, but the deals I was able to find were significant (about 30% savings).

This promotion also stacks with other promotions that IHG is running like their Double Points Plus More promotion, which can add quite a bit of value to your hotel stay if you use their rewards program.

And you can get even more life from your IHG points if you have the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, because folks with the card get the 4th night free on award stays of 4+ nights!

Good Deal or Not:

Your experience will definitely vary with this promotion.  IHG has a lot of very vague restrictions that seem counter intuitive to me.  For example, they say you will save at least 20%, but then say it is subject to availability.  In addition, blackout days and minimum stays apply (without being very clear what those dates or minimums are) and will “vary by hotel.”  IHG also states that the sale only works at participating hotels and that discounts and days of the week when the discount applies will also vary by hotel.

In other words, your savings could be all over the map.  I did some initial searches for a few upcoming trips I had planned to see if I could save any money with this promotion.  Unfortunately, nothing came back with any significant savings for any of my trips.  In fact, I compared the prices I found with the prices I saw on few online travel agencies over the same dates and they were almost the same.

IHG specifically mentioned using this sale to enjoy a great ski getaway, so I decided to look for some ski destinations I am familiar with.  My search in Park City, Utah finally returned some promising results!  I searched mid-January dates (which is popular ski season) and was able to find some rooms for $80 to $100 that usually run ~$130 to $150.  Success!

These Hotels Would Usually Cost At Least $130 During These Premium Ski Dates. So This Is a Savings of ~30%. Not Bad!
These Hotels Would Usually Cost at Least $130 During These Premium Ski Dates.  So This Is a Savings of ~30%.  Not Bad!

I shared with you my search experience to emphasize that these deals are very fluid.  There is no list of discounted destinations.  It is very vague.  Because of this, I would take a moment to search the IHG site for any upcoming trips you have between now and the end of March to see if there are any deals that catch your eye.  But these savings are not good enough that it is worth planning a trip around them.

IHG PointBreaks Fall 2018

You can book some nice PointBreaks hotels through November 30, 2018, for fewer points.  In fact, there are 12 Intercontinental hotels being offered at a discount!  That list includes spots like the InterContinental Mendoza, in Argentina, and the InterContinental Sao Paulo in Brazil.

It’s best to book a PointBreaks stay as soon as possible if you think you’ll use it because the best hotels will sell out MUCH faster at this discounted points rate.  You can always cancel later and get your IHG points back if you change your mind.

Just always remember do the math to make sure it’s a good deal before you book because some of these hotels have cheaper cash rates this time of year.  But even so, it’s harder to get a bad deal when you’re only paying 5,000 to 15,000 IHG points!

Here’s the full list!

You can quickly rack up IHG points by opening a credit card!  For example, you can earn 80,000 IHG points after spending $2,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of opening the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card.

If you’re need to top off your IHG account, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to IHG at a 1:1 ratio.  But I do NOT recommend this.  There are much better transfer partners that will give you exponentially more value for your points, like United Airlines and Hyatt.

IHG Double Points Plus More Promotion

Booking dates:   Until December 16, 2018

Travel dates:   September 16 to December 16, 2018

Important terms & restrictions:

  • You must register for this promotion in advance of your first stay, no retroactive bonus points will be awarded for stays prior to registration
  • You can earn at least 15,000 bonus IHG points per member for the double points portion of this offer
  • Targeted offers will vary by member, you must register to see which offers are available to you
  • Only one room per member per qualifying stay will be awarded the applicable bonus points

Promotion Link:   IHG Double Points Plus More Promotion

Good Deal or Not:

The base double points promotion is only ok.  But some of the targeted offers can make it a decent deal.

You earn 10 base points per $1 spent at most IHG hotels (5 IHG points per $1 spent at Staybridge Suites & Candlewood Suites), so this promotion can earn you an additional 10 bonus points for a total of 20 points per $1 spent.

The biggest caveat is that you must have two or more stays (non-consecutive nights) during the offer period to earn the double bonus points.  You can earn at least 15,000 bonus IHG points this way.

In addition, IHG is targeting members with individually tailored offers after they register, which allows you to earn even more points.  My offer was disappointing, I was targeted for 4,000 bonus points when I booked a single stay of 4 nights or longer for a total of 19,000 potential bonus points.

A Preview of Some of The Targeted Offers You Could Receive.  Some Members Report Receiving as Many as 5 Additional Offers Worth Much More Than This Offer

Other members have been offered better bonuses through offers that varied from “Stay at 3 different IHG brands”, “Book 2 stays with the IHG App”, or “Stay 2 weekends.”

Team member Jason was targeted with an offer to earn double points on every stay up to 30,000 bonus points, which is 2X the standard maximum bonus.  But it would also require double the spending.

The Offers for This IHG Promotion Aren’t as Good as Their Other Deals Have Been in the Past

Remember that if you pay with the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, you’ll earn another 10 IHG points per $1.  And the card comes with automatic Platinum Elite Status, which gives you a 50% bonus on the base points you earn.  Together this could earn you 35 points per $1 (10 base points + 10 promotion bonus points + 10 card bonus points + 5 elite status points = 35 IHG points) spend PLUS any other bonus points earned by accomplishing your targeted offers.

I recommend taking a moment to register for the promotion just to see what targeted offers you are given.  Some of these deals are easier to earn than others and can really be worth it.  A friend of mine was offered 19,200 points for staying at 3 different IHG brands.  This can be just one night at each hotel brand.  And 19,200 bonus IHG points (on top of the double points and all other base points and bonus points) is an exceptional deal.

Between 30 and 45 IHG Points Per $1 at Avid Hotels

Booking dates:   Between August 1 and December 30, 2018

Travel dates:  August 13 to December 31, 2018

Important terms & restrictions:

  • You can earn no more than 15,000 bonus points per member for this offer (not including base points)
  • You’ll earn triple points for the total spend of all qualifying paid stays at the Avid hotel brand

Promotion Link:   IHG Triple Points Promotion

Good Deal or Not:

Good!  And even better than good if you have the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card.

When you stay at an IHG hotel, you’ll earn 10 base points per $1.  And with this promotion, you’ll earn an extra 20 points per $1, for a total of 30 points per $1!

I estimate that IHG points are generally worth ~0.7 cents each (though you can get much more or less from them).  So earning 30 points per $1 means you’re getting ~21% back in points (30 points per $1 X 0.7 cents each = 21 cents).

Plus, if you pay with the Chase IHG Premier, you’ll get another 10 points per $1.  And the card comes with automatic Platinum Elite Status, which gives you an extra 5 points per $1.

Add these all up, and you’ll get 45 IHG points per $1 at Avid hotels (10 base points + 20 bonus points for this promotion + 10 bonus points for using the Chase IHG Premier + 5 bonus points for having Platinum Elite Status = 45 points per $1).  That’s like getting 31% back in points (45 points per $1 X 0.7 cents each = 31.5 cents).  And you can even earn an additional 5 points per $1, if you happen to be an IHG Spire elite member!

There are painfully few Avid hotels.  Oklahoma City has the only open hotel at the moment.  But this promotion is worth switching your stays if you’re visiting the area.  I’m planning a trip to Oklahoma City for Thanksgiving, and I’ll probably use this promotion.

And don’t forget to book your stays through an online shopping portal for even more points or cash back!

Hi jason,

Tks for the excellent write-up.

If the hotel is booked under my wife’s ihg acct, to get the extra points from chase ihg credit card, can I charge to my ihg card instead of hers?

Yes, you can pay with any credit card.

alex, mine has a promo that earns 5k pts for staying at 2 brands, will booking with all pts be counted to earn the bonus? TIA

Hi Dan, unfortunately, stays booked with points won’t count toward the IHG Double Points promotion.

thx jason… guess that the pts + cash booking won’t count as well?

I don’t think it will, Dan. Here is what the terms say:

Bonus points are not issued for Non-Qualifying Room Rates or Non-Qualifying Stays. “Non-Qualifying Room Rates” or “Non-Qualifying Stay” include the following: net wholesale individual and group rate, certain package rates, employee discount rate, friends and family rate, crew rate, special discounted contract rates, seasonal worker/crew rate, 50% travel club discount rate, travel industry discount rate, distressed passenger rate, IHG® Rewards Club Reward Nights/Airline Hotel Reward rate, rates booked through third-party web sites, complimentary hotel Stays and any other rates not defined as a Qualifying Room Rate at IHG®’s sole discretion.

I didn’t see Points + Cash specifically listed, but I’m guessing it falls under the rewards night category.

thx for the details! need a stay later this wknd in denver, co where the HI xpress in Broomfiled has a 10k pt pt break; went ahead to book that with pt instead of cash rate @ $92/n
