Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

Today only, Alaska Airlines is running a fantastic sale that allows you to buy one ticket and get a second for just the cost of taxes and fees. Basically, Alaska is handing out an improved version of its Famous Companion Fare for free.

While the sale is advertised to only work when you buy two tickets, it actually works for just one passenger. You can essentially save up to 45% off huge number of flights, even when flying by yourself. You’ll want to click here for eligible routes and full details of the promo.

Use the code LEAPDAY when searching on AlaskaAir.com to get the discount. The discount only works for travel on February 29 through March 3, 2020.

Note that you’ll receive Alaska awards miles (elite and redeemable miles) based on the actual distance flown, not the amount spent on the ticket. So you can earn some very valuable miles on transcontinental trips. We estimate Alaska miles value to be around 1.5 cents each, so a round-trip between San Francisco (SFO) and New York (JFK) would net you 5,172 Alaska miles, worth about $78.

Here are a few examples of deals you can purchase:

Los Angeles to San Francisco for $31 one-way (one passenger):

New York JFK to San Francisco for $56 one-way (one passenger):

New York JFK to San Francisco for $113 one-way (two passengers):

New York JFK to San Francisco for $128 round-trip (one passenger):

The sale ends tonight at 11:59 pm PST, so you’ll want to book quickly. Remember, you have 24 hours to cancel a ticket after you’ve purchased it, so it may be better to book now and then figure out if you can fit a trip into your schedule.

Remember to put your flight on one of the best credit cards for travel to earn bonus points for your travel purchase, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (2x on travel) or the The Platinum Card® from American Express (5x on flights purchased directly with the airline or through Amex Travel).
