You may have heard the news about the American Express® Gold Card lost its annual up to $100 airline fee credit. This was used to offset purchases like checked bag fees, seat selection, lounge access and more.

The good news is that Amex is replaced the benefit with an even more valuable one. The Amex Gold now offers a new Uber credit, which can save you more annually than the $100 airline fee credit ever could.

There are two reasons you should open this travel credit card within the next year. You could save hundreds of extra dollars! I’ll show you why.

Amex Gold Card adds $120 in Uber Cash and Uber Eats Pass membership

The Amex Gold consistently nears the top of our list for the best credit cards for dining. After all, you earn 4 Amex points per dollar at restaurants and at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 in spending each calendar year; then 1x). It’s even got a huge welcome bonus of 60,000 Amex points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first six months of account opening. We estimate Amex points value to be 1.8 cents each on average. That makes a 60,000 point bonus worth $1,080 in travel!

But the card is getting even better.

The Amex Gold received a new benefit: Monthly up to $10 credits (up to $120 annually) of Uber Cash, which can be used towards all things Uber in the U.S. You can use it for rides or even on Uber Eats’ food delivery or pickup orders. This is in addition to the card’s existing statement credit of up to $120 (up to $10 per month) toward dining with:

  • Grubhub
  • Seamless
  • Cheesecake Factory
  • Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse
  • participating Shake Shack locations

With these two benefits, you could get a total of $240 in food each year. If you can maximize these credits, you’ll bring the card’s annual fee down from $250 (see rates and fees) to just $10.

Bottom line

These latest announcements from American Express are excellent for current or prospective Amex Gold cardholders. You can read our post on the American Express Gold benefits and perks to learn all the other reasons it’s one of the best travel credit cards on the market.

Just note that the Amex Gold comes with a $250 annual fee, so you’ll want to be sure you’ll use all the card benefits before applying.
