You may have heard the news about the American Express® Gold Card losing its annual up to $100 airline fee credit in Jan. 2022. This is used to offset purchases like checked bag fees, seat selection, lounge access and more.

The good news is that Amex is replacing the benefit with an even more valuable one. Beginning early 2021, the Amex Gold will come with a new Uber credit, which can save you more annually than the $100 airline fee credit ever could.

There are two reasons you should open this travel credit card within the next year. You could save hundreds of extra dollars! I’ll show you why.

Amex Gold Card adds $120 in Uber Cash and Uber Eats Pass membership

The Amex Gold consistently nears the top of our list for the best credit cards for dining. After all, you earn 4 Amex points per dollar at restaurants and at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 in spending each calendar year; then 1x). It’s even got a huge welcome bonus of 60,000 Amex points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first six months of account opening. We estimate Amex points value to be 1.8 cents each on average. That makes a 60,000 point bonus worth $1,080 in travel!

But the card is getting even better.

Early next year, the Amex Gold will receive a new benefit: Monthly up to $10 credits (up to $120 annually) of Uber Cash, which can be used towards all things Uber. You can use it for rides or even on Uber Eats’ food delivery or pickup orders. This is in addition to the card’s existing statement credit of up to $120 ($10 per month) toward dining with:

  • Grubhub
  • Seamless
  • Cheesecake Factory
  • Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse
  • participating Shake Shack locations

With these two benefits, you could get a total of $240 in food each year. If you can maximize these credits, you’ll bring the card’s annual fee down from $250 (see rates and fees) to just $10.

Next, the Amex Gold (along with The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Green Card) will now receive a complimentary Uber Eats Pass. Uber Eats Pass is Uber’s food delivery subscription service that offers benefits like waived delivery fees and 5% off Uber Eats orders. An annual membership normally costs $119, but cardholders will receive this complimentary benefit for 12 months upon enrolling. You’ll have to enroll your card by Dec. 31, 2021.

The information for the Amex Green card has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Why you should open the card before 2021

Opening the Amex Gold in 2020 can net you hundreds more in value.

First, while the Amex Gold‘s up to $120 Uber credit will debut sometime in early 2021, the up to $100 annual airline fee credit will not be disappearing until Jan. 2022. In other words, you’ve got a short window of time where you’ll receive both statement credits at once. If you open the card in 2020, you’ll be able to receive an up to $100 airline incidental credit for purchases made in 2020 and another $100 for eligible charges in 2021. Make sure to read our guide on how to trigger Amex’s airline incidental credit.

Opening your card before 2021 means you’ll get:

  • Up to $100 airline fee credit in 2020
  • Up to $100 airline fee credit in 2021
  • Up to $120 Uber credit starting early 2021
  • Up to $120 dining credit
  • Complimentary Uber Eats Pass membership (worth $119)
  • Terms Apply
