With this card, you’ll also earn 3X AMEX Membership Rewards points per $1 you spend in 1 of 5 categories of your choice.
Depending on your spending habits, the bonus category you choose can really make an impact on how many points you earn throughout the year.
I’ll explain how you can select your bonus category!
Earn 3X AMEX Membership Rewards Points
After you receive your AMEX Business Gold Rewards card, you can select 1 of 5 categories to earn 3X AMEX Membership Rewards points per $1 you spend. The categories include:
- Airfare purchased directly from airlines
- US purchases for advertising in select media
- US purchases at gas stations
- US purchases for shipping
- US computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers
For the remaining 4 categories, you’ll earn 2X AMEX Membership Rewards points per $1 spent.
If you don’t manually select a category, airfare purchased directly from airlines will be the default 3X bonus category.
And you’ll only be able to change the bonus category each year between December 1 to January 31.
Choose an AMEX Business Gold Bonus Category
It’s simple to choose your AMEX bonus category. It just takes 5 quick steps.
Step 1. Log-In to Your AMEX Account
First, log-in to your AMEX account. Make sure your AMEX Business Gold card is selected as the active account. Then, you can click on the benefits page.
Step 2. View the 3X Bonus Categories
Next, you can view the bonus categories. Click on the green bar in the middle of the screen.
Step 3. Choose Your 3X Bonus Category
Then, you’ll see the 5 categories you can choose from to earn 3X AMEX Membership Rewards points. Select the category that will earn you the most points for your spending.
Step 4. Confirm Your Selection
Finally, click to confirm your category selection. Remember, after you confirm, you’ll only be able to change your selection one time per year.
Step 5. View Your Selection
After you choose a bonus category, you’ll see the selection on your AMEX account page.
You’ll also see that you will NOT be able to change your selection until after December 1.
Which Category Should You Choose?
Selecting a bonus category will depend on the spending habits for your small business.
One thing to consider is you might already have a card in your wallet that earns bonus points on certain categories. For example, you get 3X AMEX Membership Rewards points on airfare purchased directly from airlines with the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express.
Because you’ll already be earning bonus points, you might want to select one of the other 4 bonus categories for your small business card.

Remember, you’ll earn bonus points on purchases up to $100,000 in each of the 5 categories per calendar year. After that, you’ll earn 1 point per $1.
