If your travel schedule is less flexible, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN is an excellent card to consider.
Until August 8, 2018, between the welcome bonus and points from meeting the minimum spending requirements, you can earn at least 125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points. These points can get you nearly $1,900 worth of airfare by using AMEX Pay With Points. Because Business Platinum cardholders can exclusively get a 35% points rebate!
The Pay With Points perk can come in handy if you’re looking to book comfortable JetBlue Mint Business Class seats. Or if you want to stretch your points for coach airfare on your favorite airline!
Apply for the AMEX Business Platinum & Earn 125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards Points
Through August 8, 2018, when you apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card, you’ll earn 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on qualifying purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. And an extra 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $15,000 on qualifying purchases within the same time frame.
This is a steep minimum spending requirement. But folks planning large purchases might not have any issues completing the requirements. Or if you use tricks like Plastiq to pay bills that don’t normally accept credit cards.
So between the welcome bonus and points you earn from minimum spending, you’ll have at least 125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points (100,000 point total welcome bonus + at least 25,000 minimum spending points).
AMEX Membership Rewards points are flexible, which means you transfer them directly to 19 AMEX airline or hotel partners to book award travel. But if you want to save time, using Pay With Points to book airfare can be much easier!
Business Platinum Cardholders Exclusively Get a 35% Points Rebate!
Link: AMEX Pay With Points
- 35% of your points back for ALL First Class or Business Class flights booked through the AMEX travel portal
- 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal
You can choose from 1 of these 9 airlines to use the Pay With Points perk for coach airfare:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- Frontier Airlines
- Hawaiian Airlines
- Spirit Airlines
- United Airlines
Note: You can select an airline when you first get the card and can change it in January every year after.
This table shows how earning 125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points can get you nearly $1,900 worth of airfare.
|Points||Value of Airfare Through the AMEX Travel Portal||35% Points Rebate Amount|
|125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards Points||$1,250||43,750 AMEX Membership Rewards points|
|43,750 AMEX Membership Rewards points||~$437||~15,312 AMEX Membership Rewards points|
|~15,312 AMEX Membership Rewards points||~$153||~5,359 AMEX Membership Rewards points|
|~5,359 AMEX Membership Rewards Points||~$53||~1,875 AMEX Membership Rewards Points|
This example assumes you use all 125,000 points for one flight and the rebate points for subsequent flights. Of course, there are many redemption options and you’re not required to use all of your points at once.
Note: You must redeem at least 5,000 points to use Pay With Points. And keep in mind, getting 35% of your AMEX Membership Rewards points back is automatic. But you’ll have to wait 8 to 10 weeks to see them in your account.
Pay With Points Example: New York to London Round Trip
Here’s an example of how Pay With Points with the Business Platinum card works in reality.
Through the AMEX travel portal, I found a round-trip coach ticket from New York (JFK) to London for ~$872. Using Pay With Points, this ticket would cost 87,166 AMEX Membership Rewards points.
But Business Platinum cardholders who select Delta as their airline get 35% of your points back (~30,508 points in this example). So the final cost of this flight is ~56,658 AMEX Membership Rewards points.
This means you’re effectively getting a value of more than 1.5 cents per point ($872 cash price of ticket / ~56,658 net points required for ticket)! And the rebate means you’ll have more than 30,000 points to use to save money on future flights!
Don’t Forget About Other Lucrative AMEX Business Platinum Perks
With the Business Platinum, you also get:
- 1.5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on single purchases of $5,000+
- 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book airfare or pre-paid hotels through the AMEX Travel Portal,
- $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc.)
- Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, Escape, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
- Statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
- Free Hilton HHonors Gold elite status (free breakfast and upgrades when available)
- Terms & limitations apply
This card has a $450 annual fee, which is NOT waived. But the value of the welcome bonus, statement credits, and airport lounge access can easily offset the fee. Plus, you get access to AMEX Offers, which can save you money or earn you extra points for purchases you’re already planning!
This is a small business credit card, but if you’re eligible for business cards you can apply using just your Social Security Number. And remember AMEX does NOT have strict income requirements for business cards, so it’s easier to qualify!
Until August 8, 2018, when you apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card, you can earn a total of 125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points. The welcome bonus is 100,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after meeting tiered minimum spending requirements. And you’ll earn at least 25,000 points from the minimum spending.
AMEX Business Platinum cardholders can get a 35% points rebate when booking select flights through the AMEX travel portal. This means 125,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points can get you nearly $1,900 worth of airfare! And you don’t have to worry about blackout dates!
