It’s a terrific time to consider signing-up for one of these AMEX Delta cards, because you can take advantage of the increased sign-up bonuses, which are the highest I’ve ever seen!

Earning miles is the first step.  Then, you’ll want to redeem them for Big Travel!  Here are a few examples how you can redeem Delta miles for flights to Hawaii!

1.   Salt Lake City to Maui Using Pay With Miles to Avoid Blackout Dates

AMEX Delta cardholders can quickly redeem miles for a free flight to Hawaii by using Pay With Miles.

There are a few perks when you book this way:

  • No blackout dates
  • Earn miles and elite status credit as if you were paying cash (must be an eligible fare)
  • Miles are consistently worth 1 cent each

For example, a roundtrip, nonstop coach flight from Salt Lake City to Maui in February 2018 costs ~$584 if you pay cash.  Or you could redeem 60,000 Delta miles using Pay With Miles and pay nothing.

This means any of the current limited-time AMEX Delta card sign-up bonuses could get you a completely free round-trip flight to Hawaii!

Note:   This example shows the cost of a Basic Economy fare, which has restrictions.  But you can apply the same method if you’re booking a regular coach fare.

Another perk of using Pay With Miles is you can partially pay for the ticket with miles.  This is helpful when traveling to popular destinations like Hawaii because you don’t have to waste time searching for hard-to-find award seats during peak travel times or if your dates aren’t flexible.

2.   Book an Award Flight to Hawaii to Get Even More Value for Your Miles!

Redeeming miles for an award flight is often how you get the most Big Travel with Small Money!

Delta doesn’t publish an award chart.  But it’s easy to use the flexible calendar tool on Delta.com to search for award flights.

For example, I found round-trip coach award flights from New York (JFK) to Honolulu around Spring Break in March 2018 for as little as 45,000 Delta miles plus $~11 in taxes & fees.

Book Round-Trip Coach Award Flights to Honolulu for 45,000 Delta Miles and Up Depending on Your Travel Dates.

The cash cost of flights around these dates ranges from ~$800 to $1,200+.  To be sure you’re getting the best deal, it’s always a good idea to quickly do some calculations.

For example, it wouldn’t be a good idea to redeem 75,000 Delta miles for a seat that’s selling for $700 or less.  Because this means you’re getting less than 1 cent per mile ($700 cash cost of flight / 75,000 miles).  You’d be better off using Pay With Miles to get at least 1 cent per mile in value.

But if a seat is selling for $900 and you can book it for 45,000 Delta miles, that’s a great deal.  Because you’re getting 2 cents per mile in value ($900 cash cost of flight / 45,000 miles)!

3.   Prefer Business Class Travel to Hawaii?

The cheapest one-way Business Class award flight to Hawaii costs 40,000 Delta miles.

For example, I found a Business Class award seat available on a non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Maui in March 2018.

Remember, you can use Delta miles to book one-way award flights.  So if you don’t have enough miles for a round-trip Business Class flight, you can book separate reservations each way.

For example, you can fly there in Business Class and return in coach, or vice versa.  Or you can pay cash for one leg and redeem miles for the other.  Collecting miles gives you flexibility to design your itinerary the way you want it!

Need More Delta Miles?

Earning a lucrative sign-up bonus with the limited-time AMEX Delta offers is a great place to start earning miles.  But extra miles might help if you’re looking to book multiple award flights or just want a few extra to top-off your account.

Remember, the personal and small business versions of each card, and the Gold and Platinum versions, are each considered different products.  So if you’ve had the personal version, you’re still eligible for the business version.  Or if you’ve had the Gold, you can still earn the bonus on the Platinum (or vice versa!).

For extra Delta miles, you can also transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio.  Keep in mind, you’ll pay a small excise fee of 0.06 cents per point (up to a maximum of $99).

Or transfer Starwood points to Delta at a ratio of 1:1.  Plus, when you transfer in increments of 20,000 Starwood points, you’ll get a bonus 5,000 Delta miles!

Bottom Line

You can easily save money on flights to Hawaii by earning a lucrative sign-up bonus with any of the limited-time AMEX Delta card offers.

Becoming an AMEX Delta cardholder also gives you options for using your miles.  For example, you’ll have the ability to use Pay With Miles, which means you can redeem miles without having to worry about blackout dates.

I found a sample round-trip flight from Salt Lake City to Maui for ~$584.  Redeeming any of the current AMEX Delta card sign-up bonuses using Pay With Miles would cover the entire cost of the flight!

Or you can get more value for your miles by booking award flights.  For example, I found sample round-trip award flights to Honolulu for 45,000 Delta miles, which would cost $800+ if you paid cash!
