How do you check for available award seats when using Alaska Airlines miles for flights on their partner airlines?

You can find and book award seats on most Alaska Airlines’ partner airlines directly on alaskaair.com.

Just enter your route and travel dates and you’ll see if an award flight is available on 15 partner airlines, including American Airlines, Air France, and Emirates.

Unfortunately, you can NOT use the Alaska Airlines website to find award seats on Cathay Pacific or LAN flights.  But it’s still possible to redeem your Alaska Airlines miles for award flights on these 2 airlines!

Alaska Airlines is not part of an alliance.  But you can redeem Alaska Airlines miles for award flights on these partner airlines:

You can book award tickets with Alaska Airlines’ partner airlines for a ~$13 fee one-way or $25 for a round-trip ticket.  The good news is partner award flights have no fuel surcharges (except for flights on British Airways).

Keep in mind, the number of Alaska Airlines miles required for an award flight varies by route and airline partner.  You can find the cost of an award flight by entering your departure and destination region on the Alaska Airlines website.

How to Search for Available Seats on Most Alaska Airlines’ Partner Award Flights

Here’s a guide to finding and booking award flights on all Alaska Airlines’ partner airlines, except Cathay Pacific and LAN.

Step 1.   Go to the Alaska Airlines Website and Enter Flight Details

Visit alaskaair.com and enter your origin, destination, travel dates, and number of passengers.

Be sure to check “Use Milesto search for award flights!

First, Go to the Alaska Airlines Site and Enter Your Route and Travel Dates

I typically recommend searching for one-way award flights to make things simpler.  And you do NOT need to be logged into your Alaska Airlines account (free to join!) to search for awards.

Step 2.   View Available Partner Flights

Alaska will show a list of available award flights for your itinerary and dates.  Filter by airline and number of stops to narrow down your results.

For example, on a sample search from Los Angeles to Dubai, the results show an Emirates flight with available award seats in coach, Business Class, and First Class.

Step 3.   Select Flights and Book

Once you find the flight you want,  select it and book as you normally would for any other Alaska Airlines award flight.

If you prefer to book by phone, call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522.  But keep in mind, if the award flight is bookable online, you’ll pay a $15 call center ticketing fee.

Find Award Seats on Cathay Pacific and LAN

You can NOT see award seats on Cathay Pacific or LAN flights through the Alaska Airlines website.  Instead, use the British Airways website (sign-in required).  Then, call Alaska Airlines to book the flight.

Here’s a guide to checking for award seats on Cathay Pacific and LAN.

Step 1.   Log Into Your British Airways Avios Account

Log into your British Airways account.  It’s free to sign-up if you don’t already have an account.

First, Log Into Your British Airways Frequent Flyer Account

Step 2.   Search for Award Flights

Next, search flight routes operated by Cathay Pacific or LAN to see if award seats are available.

For example, I searched for flights from Los Angeles to Hong Kong.  And the results show 2 Cathay Pacific flights with open award seats.

I also found an award seat on a LAN flight from Miami to Buenos Aires.

Award Seats on LAN Flights Can Be Extremely Limited When Redeeming Partner Airline Miles or Points

Keep in mind, the award flight cost using British Airways Avios points can be more or less than what you’ll pay booking with Alaska Airlines miles.  So it’s a good idea to check the Alaska Airlines award charts to confirm the cost and compare.

Step 3.   Call Alaska Airlines to Book the Flight

If the British Airways website shows there are available award seats on Cathay Pacific or LAN, you can book them using Alaska Airlines miles.  Just call Alaska Airlines at 800-252-7522 and provide them with the flight details you found from your search.

Don't forget Japan Airlines as one of their partners. Just booked an award on JAL going 1st class from Seattle to Tokyo, stopover, and then to Jakarta. All for 75k!! Can't wait for the trip. Good info though, thanks.

Great info!

I concur with the statement from Emmanuel. Though you may see availability on British Airways and/or Qantas for Cathay flights, those seats may not be available to Alaska Airlines. I've had this happen on numerous occasions. However, the same seats would be available for American Airlines Advantage mileage redemption (as well as BA/Qantas).

Mark, about having it show availability for 2+ before Alaska sees it, though that may increase chances, it isn't correct. I've booked many Cathay seats on Alaska where BA only shows 1 available seat. Its really hit/miss. From my experience, theres about a 25% chance that the seats found on BA/Qantas are available for Alaska.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience!

As with CX, what shows as available on the BA site does not necessarily mean that it is available with AS. I know because this happened to me last year and last month as well. CX is a hard cookie to crack with AS.

Million Mile Secrets

Thanks for the tip and sharing your personal experience.

When looking for Cathay availability using British Airways, if it only shows 1 seat available, there really is no availability as Cathay had more restrictions for Alaska redemptions. Realistically, need to search with at least 2 or 3 available seats before you have a chance for 1.

Million Mile Secrets

Thanks for the tip, Mark! I've seen a few times when there was one award seat available and you could book with Alaska Airlines miles. But I agree it is not as simple as the other partner airlines.
