If I already have the The Platinum Card® from American Express and get The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express, can I combine AMEX Membership Rewards points I earn from both cards in one account?  What about combining points with my wife’s balance?

Great question, Matt!

When you have multiple cards that earn AMEX Membership Rewards points, all of your rewards will automatically accumulate in one account.  It doesn’t matter if you have 2 cards and one is personal and the other is for your business.

Besides earning points in one account, having the no annual fee The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express (See Rates & Fees) will keep all of your AMEX Membership Rewards points active should you decide to cancel a premium card, like the AMEX Platinum Card.

You Accumulate AMEX Membership Rewards Points in One Account When You Have Multiple Eligible Credit Cards. So It’s Easy to Transfer Points Directly to Travel Partners for Award Travel to Destinations Like India

I’ll share the benefits of having a no annual fee AMEX card.  And the rules for transferring points to a spouse.

Keep Your AMEX Points Without Paying Annual Fees

You must have at least one active card that’s linked to your AMEX Membership Rewards program number or you will lose ALL your points.

The best and cheapest way to keep your points alive and transferable is to have one of these no annual fee cards that earns AMEX Membership Rewards points:

  • The AMEX EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express
  • The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express

If you qualify for a small business card, opening an AMEX Blue Business Plus card can make a lot of sense.  Because AMEX small business cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report.  This means the card will NOT count toward card limits with Chase, which is great if you plan to apply for their credit cards.

You Can Get the No Annual Fee AMEX Blue Business Plus Card, Which Will NOT Appear on Your Personal Credit Report! And It Will Keep Your Existing AMEX Membership Rewards Points Active

That said, if you plan to cancel other annual fee AMEX Membership Rewards cards, like the AMEX Platinum, having a no annual fee small business card can be an excellent way to hang onto your points.

Can You Transfer AMEX Membership Rewards Points to a Spouse?

It’s not possible to directly transfer AMEX Membership Rewards to other folks.  But there’s a way around this rule!

You can add your spouse or anyone else as an authorized user on your account.  Then transfer your AMEX Membership Rewards points to their frequent flyer account.

Combine AMEX Points
You Can’t Transfer AMEX Membership Points Directly to a Spouse. But You Can Add Them as an Authorized User and Transfer Points To His or Her Frequent Flyer Account

It’s easy to add an authorized user to your AMEX card online or by calling the number on the back of your card.

Team member Keith’s friend recently transferred AMEX Membership Rewards points to his girlfriend’s Air Canada Aeroplan account.  This gave her enough points to book a round-trip award flight to Munich for Oktoberfest!

Another option is to transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to your frequent flyer account.  Then, book an award flight for your spouse or someone else.

Bottom Line

Folks earning AMEX Membership Rewards points with more than one credit card will automatically accumulate points in one account.  This makes it easy to transfer points directly to your loyalty accounts.

Having a no annual fee card that earns AMEX Membership Rewards points, like the AMEX Blue Business Plus is a terrific way to keep your points alive.  Because you must have at least one active card that earns AMEX Membership Rewards points or you will lose ALL your points.

And remember, AMEX small business cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report.  So you can keep your points active with a no annual fee card that that does NOT count against you for Chase’s card limits.
