Update:   An AMEX representative on Twitter has confirmed these changes will take effect October 6, 2016

Yesterday I shared rumors of a new or upgraded American Express Platinum card to be launched this week.  Now there’s more information!

Via My Fico Forums, an American Express representative leaked the news that the The Platinum Card® from American Express will soon offer 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on airfare booked directly with airlines, through American Express Platinum travel services, or with American Express Travel.

There’s no official word from AMEX yet.  But I’m excited if this is true!

Thanks to reader @ladisGr8 who tweeted us about this news!

Will You Soon Earn 5X AMEX Membership Rewards Points on Paid Airfare With the AMEX Platinum Card?

This would make the card much more valuable for folks who book paid flights.  But I hope it’s not the only improvement!

I shared the rumors of a new (or upgraded) American Express Platinum card, set to launch this week.  Now a My Fico user says an AMEX representative shared that the updated card will earn 5X American Express Membership Rewards points on paid airfare.  But only if you book:

This is good news, because the best flexible points cards currently offer, at most, 3X points on paid airfare.

Currently, the American Express Platinum card offers 2X points on airfare if you book through AMEX, and 1X points otherwise.

Note:   If you’ve been considering applying for the AMEX Platinum card, I’d wait until later this week to see if there’s a better sign-up bonus!

What’s Next?

I hope this isn’t the only new addition to the card!  We’ll find out later this week, but here’s my wish list for the new / upgraded card:

  • Improved sign-up bonus
  • Better and easier-to-use travel credit
  • Additional lounge options and an improved Priority Pass membership
  • New bonus categories
  • Better redemption rate through the AMEX Travel website
  • A new or surprising feature that distinguishes it from other cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve

Bottom Line

According to a My Fico Forums user, an American Express representative has leaked more details about the rumored new / upgraded American Express Platinum card.

It’s not confirmed, but it’s rumored the card will offer 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on airfare booked directly with airlines, through American Express Platinum travel services, or with American Express Travel.

This is great news if you book lots of paid airfare.  And I’m looking forward to seeing other improvements to the card!

For those of us without elite status count on the airline credit card to provide benefits such as priority boarding and FREE CHECKED BAGS! So while this is a good idea, I won't charge the airfare to Platinum if I have a choice to charge it to airline credit cards to save hundred dollar on checked bag free.

Million Mile Secrets

@jhawkgirl - The 5X points will be applicable even if you already have the card.

@Juno - That's a good point!

This will be interesting to compare with the Chase Sapphire and CitiPrestige cards.... I'm debating about keeping AMEX Plat or not...

Junk...Amex clawed back my 100K...done with them.

What is the thinking for those of us who already have the AmEx Plat? Will we be able to get this bonus?

Since Amex Counts MPX as airline do we suspect that this will mean 5MR plus 1 united mile for spending on amazon?
