I used hotel points to book a Marriott Hotel + Air package and get the Southwest Companion Pass.  Perhaps a post about getting the best value with the 7-night Marriott certificate would be helpful and give some ideas of where to book!

Great suggestion, Bonnie!

It sounds like Bonnie took advantage of a deal that won’t be around much longer!  Until March 31, 2017, you can use 270,000 Marriott points to book a Southwest Hotel + Air package.

This gets you a 7-night stay at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel and 120,000 Southwest points, which is more than enough to earn the Companion Pass!

You have at least 12 months to redeem the 7-night hotel certificate.  So you’ll have time to decide if you want to witness beautiful views of the Andes with a stay at the Courtyard Santiago Las Condes.  Or leaf peep this autumn in beautiful Vermont with 7 nights at the Courtyard Middlebury.

I’ll share a few examples of Marriott hotels you can book with the 7-night certificate!

I’ve written a step-by-step guide to using Marriott or Starwood points to book a Hotel + Air package to get the Southwest Companion Pass.

Until March 31, 2017, you can redeem 270,000 Marriott points and book a Hotel + Air package.  This will get you:

You can also redeem more Marriott points to stay at a higher category Marriott hotel.  Or you can book the cheapest package now and save points to upgrade to a higher category hotel later.

You Can Redeem 270,000 Marriott Points for a Hotel + Air Package Now and Pay the Difference Later to Upgrade to a Higher Category Marriott Hotel

When you book the Hotel + Air package, you do NOT have to pick the hotel on the same day.  You’ll get a certificate for the hotel category you choose that’s valid for 1 year.  It’s possible to extend the expiration date if you call Marriott.

But I recommend booking your stay as soon as possible.  Because the hotel you choose must have 7 consecutive award nights available.  So the longer you wait, the harder it might be to get the dates you want.

The best Marriott hotel to redeem the 7-night certificate depends on your travel plans.  You’ll likely get the most value if you use it during peak travel times.  For example, an early summer month stay near Disney World.

But I think the 7-night certificate is really just a bonus to getting the Companion Pass.  Because no matter which hotel you choose, you’re likely to get at a stay worth at least $700+!

Here are a few hotels I think would be good for a week-long vacation.

Hotels in the US

1.   Courtyard Middlebury

Middlebury, Vermont, is home to Middleburg College.  You can stay in the area at the Courtyard Middlebury.  Folks who like to hike and bike will enjoy the nearby trails.

Bottom Line

Until March 31, 2017, you can use 270,000 Marriott points to book a Southwest Hotel + Air package.  You’ll get the Southwest Companion Pass, 120,000 Southwest points, and a 7-night stay at a Category 1 to 5 Marriott hotel

You can redeem the 7-night hotel certificate up to 12 months after booking a package. Keep in mind, it’s possible to extend the expiration date by calling Marriott.

You also have the option to use more Marriott points to upgrade to a higher category hotel.

But if you don’t, there are still fantastic options to take a week-long vacation.  Like the highly rated Courtyard Santiago Las Condes in Chile.  Or the quaint Courtyard Middlebury in Vermont.

Which hotel would you book with the 7-night certificate?

  1. We did this, the hotel certificate showed up right away, and we had our companion pass in two days. So excited for that! But now, just playing around and trying to see where (and how) to use this 7 night stay…could you walk through the process of this? I don’t see a way to search, only a way if you are using points. This is a certificate and not sure if I am supposed to be clicking through “using points”? I am very confused, please help! Thanks so much, love your blog!

    • Congrats on getting the Companion Pass! To use the 7-night certificate, you’ll want to search a specific hotel to see if they have 7 consecutive award nights. But instead of using points, you’ll have the option to pay with your certificate from the Hotel + Air package. Also, if you find a hotel you like, you can call Marriott at 888-236-2427 to book your stay.

      • Thank you! I didn’t realize I had to search using the “points” option. “Katie” helped to clarify that for me!

  2. @ Sandy …I just did this last month – it was an easy process. Just search the hotels as if you were going to pay with points to confirm availability then you will need to call Marriott to make the booking with your certificate (they told me you couldn’t do this online). We booked the Costa Rica Marriott San Jose as a category 5, which is unfortunately a category 6 now.

  3. Being a Marriott Vacation Club owner, I got the 5 night package in order to obtain the Southwest Companion Pass. What a deal! I’ve already got several flights booked.

I decided to use my 5 nights at the San Jose Marriott in Costa Rica. I’ll be using Chase Rewards points for additional nights in other areas of this amazing country.

  4. I’m waiting for my new CC bonus points to hit my account so I can do this…by March 31. It’s not looking good. :-(. Any tips to hurrying that process along? When I call they say 3 to 4 weeks. We earned the points March 18 and March 20 (statement closing dates) but no bonus points yet.

    • Depending on the card, the points will sometimes post to your account within a few days of the statement close date. But some banks can take several weeks to post sign-up bonus points. I’d recommend calling the bank to see if there’s anyway they can expedite getting the points to you.

  5. Daraius, I just transfered points on Friday 3/24/17 and was told that it could take 3 business days for the southwest points to show up so anybody looking to do this should not wait to the last day for companion pass. I don”t know if it will still count. Just a FYI for your readers. Thanks for all your that your team does.

  6. Thomas Frymark

Booked 7 nights at the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel in San Jose next month.. Noticed that the hotel category was recently raised to 6. That’s another reason to use points ASAP. And Southwest companion pass with my points is providing airfare for two.. AND, I qualified as Marriott gold level by having 2 Starwood Amex cards, allowing lounge access. Thanks to everyone who complained on January 1st about the program changes at Southwest. I took advantage of the 3 month window.

  7. Trying to book a category nine, open availability but when I call they said I can only use it for 1-5 and no option to use points to make up the difference.

    • I’d recommend calling back. One representative I spoke with told me something similar, but in follow-up calls I was told I can use additional points to stay at a higher category hotel.

    • I would like to know if others have done this, as we would like to use points to upgrade our certificate, also. i was under the impression you could? Anybody out there had any luck upgrading their certificates with points? Not a lot of good options in the category 5’s.

  8. I would use more points so that I could book a higher catehory hotel (I’m not particularly impressed with the category 1-5 hotels). Perhaps the JW Marriott in Cancun or Cabo, and use the Southwest points and companion pass to fly there!

  9. We used ours at the Renaissance downtown Phoenix for Spring Training-huge value as they category just went up!

  10. I booked the cat 5 JW Phu Quoc, Vietnam. It looked like the best cat 1-5 value to me.

    • I was looking at Phu Quoc as well; looks amazing. The airfare however, is daunting. I would want to fly business as that is too far to fly in the back of the bus.

    • Another blogger did a nice write up on this place, you can probably Google it. VERY new and nice resort but too far for me!

    • I agree. JW Marriott Phu Quoc is best value right now. I am planning to use my Amex MR points to book flights (50% points redemption with Amex Biz platinum gets the tickets for 27.5k points/person RT!)

  11. Has anyone actually extended their certificate or upgraded it to a higher category for more miles? I signed up last Wednesday and everything was posted by Friday. I asked them if i could extend it when it was about to expire, and they said they would grant a one time exception. I also asked about upgrading and they said yes for the difference in miles. Just wondering if anyone has actually done it….

  12. Yes it can be upgraded with additional points, for each higher category, you need 30k more points. And yes many people have done this including myself. Marriott 1-5 just don’t have many options for a nice vacation hotel but if you are willing to put in more points, the options becomes much better for a extended 7 night stay.

    • I just tried to upgrade my category 7 to a category 8 over the phone with points and they told me it wasn’t possible. who do I call to have better luck? I called Marriott Customer Service 1-818-659-6778

  13. I booked the Residence Inn at Seaworld in Orlando. The hotel includes a breakfast buffet, the units have a kitchen, and there are outdoor grills to use too. The hotel also has free parking and no resort fees. There’s enough for a family to do in the Orlando area that I wouldn’t mind staying 7 days in one place.

  14. I decided to jump to Category 7 so we could stay at a Vacation Club property in Orlando. So neat to see the Companion Pass e-mail show up in just 3 days after the transfer!

  15. Are any of the Marriott “all inclusive” resorts included in this 7-night certificate option (for additional points)?
