Via IAD Gr8 and commenter amex 5X when you use your (personal) The Platinum Card® from American Express or American Express® Mercedes-Benz Platinum card to make a purchase through the United MileagePlus X app, you’ll earn 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points in addition to bonus United Airlines miles you’ll get from using the app.

That’s because AMEX codes United MileagePlus X purchases as airfare.  I can’t tell if this is intentional (after all the United MileagePlus X app is part of United which is an airline), or not.

Remember that AMEX recently changed their personal Platinum cards to earn 5X points on airfare purchased directly from airlines.

This is terrific news, because you’ll be able to earn 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points at many merchants, like Amazon, Staples, Applebee’s, Starbuck’s, Sephora, and more.

I’ll show you how to get 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on purchases at dozens of stores, restaurants, and services!

United MileagePlus X is a shopping app available for Apple and Android devices.  You can purchase electronic gift cards for dozens of merchants, including physical and online retailers, restaurants, and services.

You’ll earn bonus United Airlines miles for your purchase.  Sometimes up to 5 United Airlines miles per $1 you spend!  That’s in addition to rewards you’d earn with the credit card you register with the app.

Because the The Platinum Card® from American Express, American Express® Mercedes-Benz Platinum now offer 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points, you can use these cards through the United MileagePlus X app to earn 5X points on many non-airfare purchases!

Triggers $200 Airline Credit

View From the Wing writes that United MileagePlus X made with American Express cards coded as airline purchases and would thus get you the $200 annual airline credit.

He explains that many folks purchased Amazon gift cards through the app to trigger the annual airfare credit on certain AMEX cards, like the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, The Platinum Card® from American Express, American Express® Mercedes-Benz Platinum, or The Enhanced Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN.

Again, I’m not sure if this is intended or not, so use at your own risk!

Experiment:   Amazon.com

I purchased a $25 Amazon gift card through the United MileagePlus X with my AMEX Platinum card.

I Bought a $25 Amazon Gift Card With My AMEX Platinum Card Through the MileagePlus X App

I immediately earned 25 bonus United Airlines miles, because United MileagePlus X offers 1 additional United Airlines mile per $1 when you purchase a gift card through the app.

My Bonus United Airlines Miles Posted to My Account Immediately

And after a few days, the transaction posted to my American Express account as an airline purchase.  So it triggered the 5X bonus for airfare purchases from airlines!

Update:  The points haven’t posted to my account, and I’m guessing there’s a good chance it will get 5x points.  On the other hand, folks have reported that using the Premier Rewards Gold card doesn’t get 3x points, so there’s also a good chance that I won’t get 5X points!

I Earned an Additional 5X AMEX Membership Rewards Points by Using My AMEX Platinum Card Through the App!

Remember, you must set your payment method to your AMEX Platinum card in the United MileagePlus X app.  Otherwise you won’t earn the category bonus.

Note:   MasterCard, Visa, and Discover cards typically do NOT code as an airline purchase on United MileagePlus X.

This is a fantastic opportunity to stack United Airlines bonus miles with 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on purchases like restaurants, office supply stores, department stores, and more.

That said, this likely won’t last long.  I can’t tell if this AMEX intended for this to happen because the Mileage Plus X app is part of United (an airline) or not.  AMEX has clawed back sign-up bonuses if it suspected folks met the minimum spending in a fraudulent way.  So I wouldn’t go overboard here.

So if you have big purchases coming up from retailers included on the United MileagePlus X app, I’d make them sooner than later!

Bottom Line

If you have The Platinum Card® from American Express or American Express® Mercedes-Benz Platinum card, you can earn 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points when you buy electronic gift cards to various merchants thought the United MileagePlus X app.

This is in addition to bonus United Airlines miles you’ll get from using the app.  And includes retailers like Amazon, Kohl’s, Staples, and more!

Remember, to earn the bonus AMEX points, you must register and use your AMEX Platinum card through the United MileagePlus X app.

Let me know if you’ve had success earning 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points with the United MileagePlus X app!

  1. Worked on my American Express but did not work on my Chase Sappire Reserve.

  2. Great, lets get this shut down now.

  3. Worked on my Chase Sappire Reserve.

  4. This loophole was helpful towards the $200 airfare credit. This post only serves to exploit this. Writing articles of this nature only encourage people to abuse it. You abuse it, you lose it. So thanks for shutting this down.

  5. The experiment doesn’t actually SHOW you earning any points, just that your posted purchase shows as an airline purchase. Whether Amex awards you 5x points for it is something you’d have to wait until after your statement to see.

  6. Great. Darius will get yet another deal shut down. Greed for referral clicks has no boundaries, apparently.

  7. can one buy southwest airline giftcard vis United mileage application?

  8. Chase Sapphire Reserve will code as 3X?

  9. Remember that with AmEx Platinum, you must also pre-select a specific airline in order to trigger the $200 airline credit. If you make purchases from the United MileagePlusX app, it won’t trigger the credit unless you have pre-selected United as your preferred airline. Likewise with any other airline. You may change your preferred airline as needed.

  10. Another opportunity broadcast to the world which will inevitably end this benefit. Thanks!

  11. I got the $200/$100 credit for the AMEX Platinum/Gold by purchasing Amazon e-gift cards through United MileagePlusX.
Will try to buy few other gift cards for the 5x/3x bonuses.

    • @Anthony – I’ve updated the post to make it clearer.

@Payal @Janice – What Sara said! You can only change your preferred airline once a year.

@ff_lover – You don’t get bonus points for using the Gold card with MileagePlusX

  12. Does not work for the Business Gold 3x airfare category. Did not get bonus points.
When using Chase cards, the merchant code category is recognized.

  13. If you plan on exploiting this for 5x back, get ready for a clawback or even worse, banning from amex. They have not been particularly nice to people as of late.

Is a clawback or ruining your relationship with amex worth it?

  14. Mark, Brad and buccscott;

Better yet, let’s keep this a secret so that only you three know about it! Of course, that includes the websites you read it from, unless you found the loophole yourselves.

  15. I don’t think this will work. 5x is only for airfare, not other purchases with the airline. The $200 travel credit only applies to incidentals, not airfare. MPX works for the travel credit, airfare does not. Amex distinguishes the two. MPX will be an “other airline purchase,” not airfare, so it won’t earn the 5x. I tried it too, as soon as the 5x was announced, but I have to wait for my next statement to close to see if I get the points. I doubt I will.

  16. did not work for me, bought $25 amazon GC, showed as 5x airline……….but when statement closed, only got 25 MR points……….Boo AMEX

  17. Didn’t work for me either. Called and asked and they said it was not a direct buying of airlines ticket as I was not flying anywhere otherwise there would be a destination shown on the statement

  18. Didn’t work for me either. Just 1x points. Boo.

  19. 1x points on my mpx purchase. My southwest paid flights did pick up as 5x.
