Most of us think of travel purchases as airfare, hotel, and car rental.  But Chase includes many other things in this category, including toll bridges and highways!

Didn’t Receive Bonus Points?

In practice, not ALL tolls receive 2X points.

Visa Will Decide Whether or Not You’re Awarded Bonus Points

Chase awards points according to the category Visa uses to code each merchant.

For example, the Sapphire Preferred gets 2X points on dining.  But you probably will NOT get 2X points for buying nachos at the hockey game, because Visa will code it as “Recreation / Amusement Facilities.”

For this reason, some tolls might not code as travel.  Some have been reported to show up as “Government Service,” “Financial Service,” or similar.

Merchant Codes Can Be Confusing. Check Your Statement to See How Your Toll Purchases are Posting!

Many programs like E-ZPass have the option to replenish your account at kiosks and in certain stores with cash or card.  When using this method, Visa will likely code your purchase under the store you’re using (retailer, gas station, etc).

Your best bet for receiving bonus points is to refill online.  That way Visa won’t confuse the merchant!

Reload Your E-ZPass Online to Earn 2X Points on Travel

Folks on Reddit report that not all E-ZPass states code their services as a travel purchase.  But if you buy your pass from a state that has confirmed 2X points (like Illinois, New York, and Ohio), you should continue to earn bonus points wherever you use it.

Missing Your Bonus Points? Chase Has Great Customer Service, and Will Usually Correct Your Points Balance

You can always check your account transactions to see if you’ve earned 2X points on your toll purchase.  If not, you can try calling Chase, or send a secure message, and they will usually fix it for you!

Bottom Line

The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns 2X points on travel, which includes tolls.  But sometimes Visa codes toll services in different ways, like “Government Services.”

Make sure to replenish your account directly from the toll service online, and NOT from a local merchant like a retailer or a gas station.  Because your card will likely not give you bonus points.

Tolls are specifically listed under travel on Chase’s website, so there is a good chance you can have your points adjusted if you did not receive bonus points.  Just call or message Chase and ask!

  1. Georgia Peach Pass does not earn the bonus. It codes something odd like real estate services

  2. Citi Premier gives you 3x!

  3. If you have the chase ink cash and pay at a gas station for your pass would you, would you expect to get 2x points (as gas is a 2x category of the ink cash)? If so and you have the chase sapphire preferred card then you could still earn the valuable 2 ultimate rewards points.

  4. EZ Pass from Virginia is codes as Government services and doesn’t earn bonus points.

  5. Citi Premier should give 3x points

  6. Maybe not as big a commission to bloggers though.

  7. Good luck calling Chase to correct a code and receive 2x points. I called last week about a restaurant (with Restaurant in their billing name!) and Chase refused to award 2x points. Agent says they “used to adjust” the points but no longer are allowed to ….

  8. Sun pass in Florida always works as 2x. Also, every time I’ve bought food at a sporting event it registers as dining and I’ve always received 2x.

  9. I believe the Citi Premier offers 3x as tolls are classified as travel.

  10. Would I get $$ back from the Barclaycard Arrival?

  11. This does not work in Virginia. Talked to chase about it and it is not coded correctly. I have my ez pass on auto replenish with the sapphire.

  12. Can confirm that the Citi Premier will give you 3x on tolls (I’ve been using it down here in Florida for over a year)

  13. Surprised to see there is no mention of citi thank you premier or Amex premier rewards gold card which both give 3X points on travel expenses including tolls..this blog is good and useful but shouldn’t be that much biased towards chase sapphire card..I have all the above 3 cards..I use sapphire for car rental because it offers primary insurance and for restaurants because it gives 2X points but otherwise citi thank you premier or Amex prg have slight edge over sapphire for travel charges..premier gives 3X on gas and hence I use it for gas or the Amex cash preferred which gives 3 % discount on’s also the best card for purchases at super markets including Kroger as it gives 6% cash back and at departmental stores like kohl’s jc penney macy’s etc as it gives 3% back..

  14. does this work if i have my Ezpass set to auto refill online?

  15. My EZ Tag in Texas (Houston area) was always coded as travel until the sapphire reserve card came out. Coincidence? I wonder.
