What I Don’t Like

If you book hotels at the last minute, Hotel Tonight could work for you, but there are some things you should know.

1.  Not a lot of Savings

I only found 1 example where using the Hotel Tonight costs less than booking directly with the hotel or using Kayak.

2.   Nonrefundable

All bookings are nonrefundable. So if you have to cancel or your plans change, you do NOT get your money back.

3.   Hotels Change

Available hotels change frequently so the hotel you want may not be there when you check again 5 minutes later.  Or a better hotel could become available AFTER you’ve already booked.

Bottom Line

Folks who book hotels within 7 days might save money using the Hotel Tonight app (Apple) (Android).

But you’ll usually pay about the same or more.  And all reservations are nonrefundable!  So if your plans change you lose your money.

Because there aren’t any real savings, I’d rather book directly with the hotel and get stay credit toward elite status.

Although if you have a $25 discount from using a promo code, like “ddubash” then you’d save $25.  But you have to decide if the $25 savings is worth not being able to change or cancel your reservation and losing out on hotel elite stay credit.

  1. On my bicycle tour, Hotel Tonight helped me find last minute deals when I wearily pedaled into towns. It’s better in bigger cites, and provided some good deals in Southern California.

  2. Well that is expected of the “7-day” rates. The “same-day” rates is where the savings are.

During my last trip to San Francisco we waited to book each night of our trip, the same day. So, yes, it was “up in the air” every day if we would get a great deal.

Look at how much it would cost to book in advanced (for a trip in say 2 months). Check Hotel Tonight daily, for 1-2 weeks and note prices. Hotel Tonight “same-day” was consistently lower than the advanced rate, so we gambled and it paid. Keep in mind events, high season, day of the week, etc.

  3. Just for fun, I’ve often checked Hotel Tonight rates for Hilton NYC properties such as the HGI Times Square for that same evening, and usually Hotel Tonight beats the Hhonors rate. Booking several days out, however, may yield a different result.

  4. I have had better luck booking last minute deals on Expedia or priceline.

  5. When they first launched the app, they provided each member of my family with $50 promo which was nice. Later i agree it’s not giving any deals as such.

  6. This post makes no sense. You’re checking November 11 rates on November 17? When did you actually check? That makes a HUGE difference as to the rates. Hotel Tonight started as a same-day booking service with heavily distressed inventory. Then they expanded to do bookings later out with non-distressed inventory.

How long have you been at this now? Was this post written by an intern from The Points Guy?

I have always preferred to book direct with the hotels due to the flexibility it offers, in case plans change last minute. A very important factor for me is the elite status which I earn when I book direct with IHG, Hilton, Accor etc.
