For a limited time, the Barclaycard Premier Miles & More® World MasterCard® is offering an increased sign-up bonus of 50,000 Lufthansa miles when you spend $5,000 within 90 days.

You can use those miles to fly on United Airlines to Hawaii, the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, and more!

I’ll tell you who should and should NOT consider applying for this offer!

What You Get With the Lufthansa Barclaycard

Link:  18 Ways to use Your Lufthansa Miles!

You’ll receive:

  • 20,000 Lufthansa miles after your 1st purchase and payment of the $79 annual fee
  • 30,000 more miles after spending $5,000 within 90 days
  • 2 miles per $1 you spend on tickets purchased directly from Miles & More airline partners (such as Brussels Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, & SWISS)
  • 1 mile per $1 you spend on all other purchases
  • NO foreign transaction fees

The $79 annual fee is NOT waived for the 1st year.

Because Lufthansa is a Star Alliance member, you can use Lufthansa miles to book  flights on United Airlines (or any other Star Alliance airline).

The Lufthansa’s Star Alliance award chart shows you the number of miles necessary for award flights.

You could use 50,000 Lufthansa miles to get 2 low-level domestic coach award tickets on United. And you won’t pay fuel surcharges using Lufthansa miles on United Airlines within the US.

Snorkel or Scuba Dive in Hawaii Using the Lufthansa Barclaycard Sign-Up Bonus for a Round-Trip Flight on United Airlines

For example, you could use the 55,000 Lufthansa miles (50,000 sign-up bonus + 5,000 miles from minimum spending) for

  • 1 round-trip coach flight to Hawaii from the US mainland on United Airlines (40,000 Lufthansa miles)
  • 1 round-trip Business Class ticket within the US & Canada (55,000 Lufthansa miles)
  • 1 round-trip coach flight to Central America & the Caribbean (35,000 Lufthansa miles)

This is a very good offer for folks who already have the other major Barclaycard travel cards such as the Barclaycard Arrival Plus and Barclaycard US Airways card.  However, you will pay fuel surcharges for flights on Lufthansa.  But check out my series on how to avoid paying these fuel surcharges.

Folks who aren’t sure if they can unlock the 50,000 Lufthansa mile bonus by spending $5,000 within 3 months can look at these 40+ ways to meet credit card minimum spending requirements.

Who Should NOT Apply for the Barclaycard Miles & More Lufthansa Card?

Because Barclaycard doesn’t allow folks to sign-up for more than 1 to 2 of their cards per year, you probably would do better by 1st getting their other cards.

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus gives you a lot of flexibility because you can use the sign-up bonus to fly on any airline at any time.

And the Barclaycard US Airways card currently gives you 40,000 US Airways miles after your 1st purchase.  This card will be phased out soon.  And when it’s gone, so is the sign-up bonus!

Bottom Line

The Barclaycard Premier Miles & More Lufthansa card has an increased sign-up bonus of 50,000 Lufthansa miles.  The previous bonus was 20,000 miles!  Check out my series on Lufthansa miles for more ways on how to use them!

Folks who already have the Barclaycard Arrival Plus and the Barclaycard US Airways card might consider signing-up for the Lufthansa card.

You can use the sign-up bonus of 50,000 Lufthansa miles to fly on partner United Airlines.  And that’s enough miles to get you round-trip to Hawaii in coach or anywhere in the US & Canada in Business Class!

  1. Hi Daraius,

Do you have an end date for this offer? On the Miles and More website it says until November 30, but not mentioned on the splash page.

    Thanks.

  2. Best use is the one I just did—-60K miles for rt on United to Buenos Aires. The LH US desk is very easy to talk to on the phone and they have plenty of UA seats open. They also fly direct to Rio and Sao Paulo. No fees and 2 free bags. (both Brazil and Argentina hit Americans for $120 visa fee tho.)

M&M miles expire in exactly 3 years from obtaining them with no way to extend them. But basically you get a very expensive rt to EZE or Brazil for $79 and some spend.

  3. I thought Miles are NOT transferable among Star Alliance members. If the miles are Lufthansa’s, there’s no way to transfer or “convert” those to United miles. Afraid that this probably wouldn’t work out.

  4. Do you think about TAXES? Lufthanza has HUGE taxes. much more United…
50K miles? No, thx. Do not need. Even free of charge…

  5. If I got this deal back in June 2013 and got the 50,000 points and cancelled the card this past August, could I still be eligible for another 50,000 points if I re-apply, or is it once in a lifetime?

It’s true that in some cases LH taxes and fees can be ridiculously high, BUT it is also true that this card prevents all of your LH miles from expiring. As long as you maintain the account in good standing and use the card once a month, none of your miles disappear from old age, no matter how old they are. This is a major benefit of the card to someone who is not a VERY frequent flyer with LH but still wants to accumulate miles with them.

  7. You use the LH miles through the LH ff program to get seats on United. You don’t transfer points.

No fees on UA to South America.

  8. I got the US Airways card about two months ago. Would I be better off getting this now or sticking with my original plan to wait for a good signing bonus on the Arrival Plus card?

  9. I had thought domestic RT on United business would be 35,000 miles, as that’s what I booked if for earlier this year. Did the required miles recently increase to 55K?
