Update: This offer is no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.I’ve written that the Barclaycard US Airways card will be discontinued once the merger between American Airlines and US Airways is complete.
This means this card will be eventually phased out. I don’t know the exact date it will be unavailable, but it will be unavailable at some point!
And by next year, the 2 airlines will almost be completely merged.

The sign-up bonus on this card is 40,000 miles, which you get after your 1st purchase and payment of the $89 annual fee.
You also get:
- Priority check-in and boarding
- A free checked bag for you and up to 4 traveling companions on domestic flights
- 5,000 mile discount on US Airways award tickets
- Companion certificate each year for up to 2 traveling companions (this ends in December)
- $89 annual fee, NOT waived for the 1st year

This Will Become an American Airlines Card
Once American Airlines and US Airways finish merging, Citi will be the primary issuer of American Airlines credit cards. But the Barclaycard US Airways card will become a Barclaycard American Airlines card.

You will NOT be able to apply for the Barclaycard American Airlines card. Only existing Barclaycard US Airways cardholders will receive the new American Airlines card.
The new Barclaycard American Airlines AAdvantage MasterCard will have different benefits, including:
- 10% mileage rebate (so, for example, if you spend 25,000 miles, you’ll get 10% or 2,500 miles back)
- 25% off onboard purchases (like food and drink)
- $100 flight discount each year you spend more than $30,000 on the card
- Priority check-in
These perks are similar to those offered on Citi American Airlines cards.
But some of the benefits on the old Barclaycard US Airways card will NOT be offered on the new card, including:
- Companion certificate each year for up to 2 guests
- 10,000 Elite Qualifying Miles after you spend over $25,000 a year
- US Airways Club lounge pass and membership discount
These perks will stop at the end of 2014. Depending on how you value elite miles, the companion pass, lounge access, and mileage rebates, the new card might be a better deal for you.
And if you get the card now, you’ll still get the companion certificate, which allows you to take 2 companions for $99 each when you travel on a paid ticket. You’ll be able to use it within 12 months of when it’s issued.
But the new Barclaycard American Airlines card will NOT offer a companion certificate!
When Will the Barclaycard US Airways Card Be Discontinued?
I don’t have an exact date, but the card will be retired eventually.
So if you’ve been thinking about applying for the Barclaycard US Airways card, this might be a good time. And remember, you will NOT be able to apply for the new Barclaycard American Airlines card. Only existing US Airways cardholders will be converted over to the new card.
That said, Barclaycard has become strict about issuing cards and often won’t issue folks more than 1 or 2 at a time. There might be other Barclaycard cards that suit your travel goals better, like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite Mastercard.
Bottom Line
The Barclaycard US Airways card will be discontinued very soon!
If you don’t have the card already (and don’t have a lot of Barclaycard cards), this could be your last chance to apply for it.
It will become the Barclaycard American Airlines AAdvantage card in 2015, with some new benefits. But only existing US Airways cardholders will get the card. It will NOT be open to new applicants.
Will you be applying for this card now that it’s about to disappear? Let me know in the comments!
