Today is the last day to activate the 3rd quarter bonus on the Chase Freedom card.  Until September 30, 2014, you’ll earn 5X points or 5% cash back when you use your card at gas stations and Kohl’s department stores.

If you haven’t activated yet, you can still earn the bonus for all of your gas station and Kohl’s purchases from July 1, 2014, onward.  But you have to activate the bonus by today.  It just takes a minute.

What Are Chase Freedom Category Bonuses?

You can earn 5 points per $1 you spend, or 5% cash back, on categories that change every 3 months.

For July, August, and September 2014, the Chase Freedom bonus categories are gas stations and Kohl’s.  You’ll earn the bonus on spending in these categories, up to $1,500 per quarter.

You must have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, (no longer offered) Chase Ink Bold or Chase Ink Plus, to transfer Ultimate Rewards points to hotels and airlines.

Activating the quarterly bonus is retroactive so you will earn 5% (up to $1,500 or 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points) for all gas station and Kohl’s purchases made in July, August, and September.

Remember, gas stations and Kohl’s sell gift cards to other merchants so it’s easy to maximize the bonus by buying gift cards to restaurants and stores you’ll visit later in the year.

  1. I wonder if an Amazon payment transaction will count as a bonus purchase in Q4.

  2. This is one of my favorite credit cards. I wish the fourth quarter had a different category though. I know with the holidays a lot of people shop in department stores but I hate having to check and see which stores count and which don’t. The other 9 months of the year I keep this card in my wallet.

  3. What is the better deal–5% cash back or the 5X UR? I have a feeling it is the latter and I just accidentally chose the cash back. Can I change this or am I stuck for the quarter?

  4. Bonus points options –
The card offers the option of a round trip ticket up to $335 with no fee using their reservation #. Cost= 25,000pts
Would it be better to take the credit, cash or just use the points ?
The cash option is going to expire in early October 2014.
