Did you know that you could get higher sign-up bonuses for American Express cards than what’s publicly available?

American Express sends out special offers (typically via mail) to folks they see as desirable customers.

You Can Get a Higher Sign-Up Bonus for AMEX Cards If You’re Targeted

There are a few steps you can take to make sure you receive these special offers from AMEX.

AMEX Targeted Offers

Emily and I recently received a couple of AMEX offers in the mail including:

American Express Premier Rewards Gold

We got an offer for 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points when you spend $1,000 within 3 months on the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card.

American Express Sign Up Bonus

You Can Get an Extra 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards Points With the AMEX Premier Rewards Gold Card If You’re Targeted

This is much better than the public deal which will only give you 25,000 points when you spend $2,000 within 3 months!

The American Express Premier Rewards also includes:

  • $195 annual fee (waived the 1st year)
  • 3X points for airlines, 2X points at US restaurants, US gas stations, and US supermarkets
  • $100 airline incidental fee credit each year
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Transfer points to airline and hotel partners
  • Terms & conditions apply

American Express SimplyCash

The largest public offer for the AMEX SimplyCash card is $250 cash back when you apply by September 21, 2015.  However, we got an offer in the mail for a better offer.

How to Increase Your Chances of Getting AMEX Targeted Offers

No one knows exactly how AMEX determines which potential customers to target.  But here’s some ideas of how you can increase your chances of receiving better bonuses from American Express:

1.   CardMatch Tool

You may get a better offer using the CardMatch tool as well!  American Express has previously targeted folks for higher offers on the Platinum, Premier Rewards Gold and Delta cards through the CardMatch tool.

You have to enter your social security number, but it is a soft credit inquiry which will not show up on your credit report.

And you could get a mega sign-up offer!

2.   Be a Desirable Customer

Perhaps the best thing you can do to increase your chances of being targeted by AMEX is to maintain a good credit score and pay your bills on time.  If you haven’t been responsible with your credit, you’re unlikely to get a lucrative offer.

3.  Register a New Business

I registered a new business in Texas and there was a slight misspelling of my name on the registration.  I started receiving targeted offers with my name misspelled the same way.

So AMEX may be pulling information from new business registrations.

4.   Opt-in With the 3 Credit Bureaus

You can also opt-in at OptOutPrescreen.  This will allow the 3 credit bureaus to provide your information to credit card and insurance companies.  However, this could possibly put a lot of junk mail in your box.

Bottom Line

You may be able to get a better sign-up bonus for certain American Express cards, if you’re targeted.

AMEX wants to attract good customers with these offers.  So you are a better candidate if you have a good credit score and pay your bills on time.  You can also increase your chances of getting a targeted offer by opting-in to receive credit card marketing information from American Express.

  1. Last year, I used the Card Match tool and received the 50,000 Membership Rewards points for American Express Premier Gold card (spend $1,000 in 3 months).

  2. @Daraius – My online AMEX account has a new look. You may want to investigate, as the Opt-in info you’ve provided above is mostly useless in my situation.

  3. Anthony Thomas

AmEx also lets you update your income amount online, so if it increases login and do this. Adds to the “Be a Desirable Customer” factor. The more you earn, the more willing they’re likely to be to offer you more credit or higher risk products such as a charge card.

  4. Noticed you may have accidentally posted an unedited image of your address FYI.

  5. For my latest Blue Cash preferred, I tried using the CardMatch link for the $150 bonus (as opposed to the $100 bonus), but when I clicked the “existing AMEX cardholder” I was told that the offer wasn’t available for me. I clicked the “new cardholder” selection and was able to get the offer.

I don’t know if this is frowned upon in the miles/points community (or by AMEX themselves), but I imagine card companies would put a premium on pulling in new cardholders as opposed to existing.

  6. I received an Amex targeted offer in the mail for their Simply Cash card, spend $1,000 and get a $300 statement credit! I ordered an additional user card and gave it to my daughter (college student) so she could experience the joy of CC sign up bonuses. She was so thrilled when she received the $300 credit. Quite the lesson for a second year Finance major.

  7. Yep, I just got the bonus on a direct mail offer for 50k on the Biz Gold that was not available online.

  8. I just received Amex premier rewards gold card with 50000 sign up bonus through the mail. But my credit score has recently dropped just below 700 because of applying chase sapphire card 2 month back.
So Darius do you think is it advisable to go ahead and apply for the AMEX without getting rejected?

  9. Interestingly enough, I just got an offer for a Plat card with 60k points for spending $3000/3 months when the best public one is 40k.

  10. I keep getting INK offers, even though I have 2 INK cards–will I complain??? Absolutely NOT! One of them is for 60,000 points!!

  11. @ Ozaer N.: I thought Chase only allow one time sign-up bonus only? If you already have both Ink Bold and Plus cards and got the sign up bonus then you won’t receive any sign up bonus by applying for same Ink card (either Bold or Plus).

    Is this correct?

  12. OMG I’d so love to get one of those 50K/$1K offers. My family members only get the 50K/5K ones! Thanks for the tip – just turned on offers for myself; they were off. Cross your fingers for me!

  13. Did you apply for any of the targeted offers (I believe you already had these cards in the past)? I received an offer for Premier Rewards Gold Card, but I had this card and closed it about an year and half ago. Since amex now limits getting the sign up bonus again, will I get the bonus if I apply?

  14. Are these sign up bonus offers for only people that have never had an American Express credit card? I have the American Express Blue Sky card and got it when I got a 30,000 points promotion but I want the American Express Premier Gold Card now and I don’t want to apply if I can’t get a good bonus offer.

  15. I received the 50k bonus Amex Gold card through the mail and just completed it. I wanted to get one for my wife as well, but she doesn’t get cards for bonuses like I do. I frequent your site and found this thread with your link to the Card Match Tool and just used it with her and she got that same 50k bonus for the Amex Gold and was just approved. Thank Daraius, and safe travels to you and Emily!

  16. i accidentally applied thru amex link for bluecash prefered and was approved with 150 0ffer however i was qualified to receivw 250 if i went thru card match. i imediately sm them and asked if they would honor the 250 but wastold no bc 150 0ffer was alrady applied. i just got card in mail and havent activated yet…sny osuggesion

  17. My sister is targeted for 100,000 MR sign-up promotion from AMEX OPEN Platinum card (100,000 MR points for $5000 in the 1st 3 months). She said I can use the RSVP code if I can make a use of it.

When I visited the Platinum open page to apply the card, I keyed in the RSVP code and put my information on it. On the next page, it pops up my sister name on it but her name fields are not grayed out which means I can change it to my name. Do you think I may use her AMEX RSVP code to apply Platinum Card for myself (i.e. under my name)? I have 4 Amex personal cards (Everyday, SPG, Delta, and Hilton) already.

  18. I’ve gotten targeted and approved for the Blue Cash Everyday Amex for a $250 cashback bonus when I spend $1,000 in the first 3 months. Also got targeted for Everyday Amex for 25,000 Membership Rewards points when I spend $2,000 in the first 3 months.
