Update:   This offer is no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

I wrote about how the minimum spending on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® card might be increasing very soon.

Well, the minimum spending to earn the sign-up bonus has ALREADY increased to $3,000 in 3 months when you apply online! Previously, the minimum spending was $1,000 in 3 months.  But read the rest of the post before clicking on the link to apply!

Thanks to Million Mile Secrets readers for letting me know that the 40,000 mile Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® card with the LOWER $1,000 minimum spending requirement is still available!  However, you have to CALL Barclays at 800-307-0341 to sign-up for the offer.

I checked with 3 different employees, and they all confirmed that the previous $1,000 offer is still active if you apply over the phone!  I don’t know how long this will last, but I suspect that it could change soon to match the higher minimum spending if you apply online.

Make sure that you specifically ask for the 40,000 mile offer when you call Barclays to apply!  And confirm that you’re getting the lower minimum spending requirement when you apply AND when you call to activate the card.

Emily and I earn a commission if you apply for the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® using 1 of our links, but that offer has a higher minimum spending of $3,000 within 3 months.  But the mother-in-law rule says that we always let you know of a better offer even if we don’t earn a commission on it!

Bottom Line

The minimum spending to get the 40,000 miles or ~$420 in travel on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® has increased to $3,000 in 3 months if you apply online.

But you can still get the previous offer with $1,000 minimum spending offer by calling Barclays at 800-307-0341.  We don’t get a commission if you call Barclays, but it is the better offer for you!

I don’t know how long this lower spending offer will last, so you may want to apply sooner rather than later in case the better phone offer disappears as well!

  1. I signed up for the card on 2/19 around 11pm CST after seeing the warnings about the spend req increase…when I signed up I didn’t bother to look if it had changed yet (I know, ha), so I’m not sure which requirement I’m now under. Any way to find out without calling?

  2. Thanks for the info. I’ve been wanting to apply for this card and just haven’t gotten around to it. I was about to apply last night and saw the minimum spend had already increased. When I saw your post this morning I jumped on it and called and was approved right away. The statement credit will come in handy at B&B’s for our Aug./Sep. trip to the Bavarian Alps. My Boyfriend got the card also. Karen

  3. I called and applied this way. They don’t appear to give approval right away though. They refer you to a website to check the status or you receive an email after they decide. That is of-course, unless they are declining me 🙂

  5. If you click the link to apply online above and then once on that page click the link for under the FAQs they still have the ad to apply online and you only have to spend $1,000 in the first 90 days.

  7. I just called and was approved for the Arrival card with 40000 miles with $1000 spend in 3 months.
Takes about 10 minutes. I thought that I missed this offer due to my procrastinating nature. Thanks for the update

  8. It works, but once you click on the link that says $1000 min. spend, the next image says $3000 min. spend.

  9. @Victor: Yeah, but once you click that banner ad it opens another page that says $3,000 spend required in the main part and in the terms. The banner ad is the only place on the site I can find where it still shows $1,000 in 3 months.

  10. Hi Darius,

Do you know if United Airlines just increased surcharges on their flights from London, UK to NY from $39(on 2/17) to $218(today)?

  12. Is this card churnable?

  13. Called this afternoon and got the card with $1,000 spending requirement. The call took about 10 minutes. This will teach me to procrastinate on expiring card offers….

  14. Just applied over the phone. Without even asking, the representative mentioned the 40K for 1000 spend. Good find on this. Looks like the telephone application process has not been updated yet.

  15. Thanks!

I was able to get this – I was holding out until my next AppORama but hey, might as well start a bit early this time – now I have to get hopping on my US Air Card application with this round.

P.S. I owe you one – a click and filled out application on one of your sponsored link down the road! Thanks again!

  16. It worked. Thank you so much for the info, Darius – this is why we all keep returning to your site.

  17. Thanks D.

    $89. fee.

    40,000 miles $1000 spend in 90 days.

    I owe you a favor.

  18. Dariaus,

Do balance transfers count toward the spending requirements?

  19. Hi there, I would like you to know that I have got my card and also received the 40k miles as well. It takes like 1 or 2 days to receive the miles, which made me really surprised since the card took very long to arrive at my house. Anyways, you mentioned that the miles will worth $400+ if it’s redeemed for travel related. What do you mean by that? Does it mean using the card to purchase travels or using the miles to purchase travels?
    Thank you.

  20. Oh well, I didn’t notice your post about applying by phone to get the lower minimum spend. I procrastinated and didn’t apply until yesterday and applied when it was raised to $3000 (applied online). I was approved instantly and approved for the Hyatt visa instantly. I didn’t apply for any other. Kinda figured I had bitten off enough for this go around.

  21. I 100% agree with Robert. Thank you, Dariaus and Emily! Also, enjoyed all the wonderful pictures and stories from Italy 🙂

  22. Hi Dariaus;
I enjoy your site every morning. I applied for Barclay and U.S. Bank Perk on 19th. I was instantly approved for Barclay, but U.S. Bank disapproved saying they need more information. It was for business card; I do own a corporation. Shall I call them or wait for their mail to arrive?

    Thank you.

  23. Just got approved on the phone for a 5k line with the 1000 min spend. They said this is actually the only offer they have over the phone, and that it’s just the online one that has the 3000 requirement.

  24. I read the suggestions on how to reach a card spend that may be higher than one’s normal spending in order to get the bonus and I used one that I don’t think I read on that useful list — wanted to bring it up here.
If you’re going to be spending cash on a plane ticket anyway within, for instance, six months, then consider an electronic gift certificate with the airline. Use your card and give one to your spouse or even to yourself. I and my wife fly United at least twice a year transpacific and while we use miles when we have them we often pay cash (i.e., use a credit card). This is usually a $2000+ outlay for us. I found that with United you can easily move some of this future spending up to the present with a gift certificate on their site, which you can then view anytime on their site. All it requires of you is not to delete the email.

    • @tsui – there are high departure taxes from London, so $39 seemed low.

@dhammer53 – I believe the annual fee is waived for the 1st year as well. I’ll let you know when I need those insider Brooklyn restaurant tips!

@Tobias – The terms say “Net Purchases” so balance transfers don’t seem to be an option.

@ Eugene – You use the card to make purchases, and then log into your account and get a statement credit by redeeming miles towards what you spent.

@suechibana – You could call them, but they have a tough reconsideration process.

@BillyBob – That’s a great idea. But you could just buy a Visa or MasterCard gift card and use it as a form of payment, though you are limited to the maximum value of the gift card.

  25. Can I get this card and make car rental reservations and then pay for it via statement credit once I get the points? Or do you have to make the purchase after you have the points in your account?

  27. Hi Darius,

My husband just called this morning and got instant approval and was told the card would be for 1 k in spend.
    Will verify when card arrives.
Thanks for the heads up on this.

    Would like to ask.. ..
Why do they often ask if you will be taking money out of the ATM?
And– how often you have done so in the last 30 days?
The answer is No and None but have run across this several times and wonder if you answer factors in on obtaining the card.

  29. Just called, the 1k offer is still available. However they weren’t able to process my application over the phone because I’m not yet 21. I’ll be applying online and will have to settle for the 3k offer. Oh well, I’m planning on actively using this card anyways so it shouldn’t be a big deal.

  30. Thanks for the heads up on your blog, Daraius. I applied for the arrival mastercard online on the 18th and got an email with approval yesterday (27th). I already had a different card w/ barclaycard, so I logged in to my account later in the day and sent a message asking about the min. spend. Today they confirmed $1k in 3 months for 40,000 points. It’s funny that they call their points miles when you can’t get an airline ticket award with it.

  31. Thanks! I just called and was approved for 40k miles w/ $1k spend in 15 minutes.

  32. Great tip…Thank you! I was denied 11 mos. ago due to having too many credit cards. This time, applying over the phone went really smooth and I was approved instantly for the 40k w/$1000 min. I can’t even remember the last time I was “instantly approved.” I could be convinced to make all my applications over the phone if it always goes this smoothly.

  33. Has anyone heard or know what date the online Arrival application page got changed to $3000 min spend? I told my daughter to apply quickly on 2/19/14 to avoid the increase. She applied that day and got approved but didn’t check what the offer page said about the min spend. Since the phone application is still allowing the $1000 min spend do you think she would have a chance Barkley would match her min spend to the phone offer?

  34. Has anyone had any luck with the 1k spend offer lately? I just tried calling and was told there was no such offer.

  35. Looks like the 1K offer via phone is no longer available. I just called and they only had the 3K spend for 40K miles.

  36. I was told today that the 1k spend offer is no longer available.

  37. My Arrival card is on the way,per email today,..
